In my opinion THE most underrated (by the general public) of the truly elite guitarists of that era.

National Treasure. Saw him in a club in the early 80's. Killed it. A buddy who saw him in his final months on the road told me he was still killing it. RIP bluesman.

Dig it, brother...Johnny lived the blues❗️ Raised in a red-neck town, discriminated against because of his albinism, TOO WHITE. ☆ Thankfully, both he & his albino brother, Edgar, found love and family support, nurturing their respective, virtuous talents...both played the 1969, legendary Woodstock Festival.

i had the privilege to see Johnny a few times near the end at some very intimate venues. He could barely walk to the stage but once he sat down and got his guitar the magic happened, Same with Leon Russel. Those guys lived for the music and the music kept them alive.

The bass player is Tommy Shannon who later played bass in Stevie Ray Vaughans Double Trouble. You saw Johnny Winter play Tobacco Road with his younger brother Edgar singing and playing hammond b3 and sax. Johnny died about 7 or 8yrs ago.

I love and respect all the blues pioneers but Johnny is my favorite.

I appreciate your appreciation for Johnny Winter. He was one of my favorite artists back in the early 1970s.

There was a small; coffeehouse that opened at 11 pm and stayed open al;l night - the three of them came in with acoustic guitars and jammed untill; 6 am

Saw him in concert in Okla. City in 1970. Not use to him not playing without his famous Gibson Wedge. White boy in 11th grade in cowboy country instantly became a Blues lover.

I saw Johnny play a few months before he passed on at bb Kings blues bar and grill in NYC. Even towards the end of his life he played amazing and tore the house down.

I saw him play the Pickle Barrel in Vermont about 30 years ago. At the time, I was my college radio's blues DJ.

You're correct, Jimi made Eric feel self conscious when he 1st jammed with him in England. He didn't make Johnny feel that way though when they'd blow each other away jamming together fairly frequently at Steve Paul's (Johnny's manager at the time) club "The Scene" in Greenwich Village. Jimi was mesmerized by Winter's Slide playing, and was working on incorporating more of it into his own playing himself. Winter was packing large venues at one time, but he was more interested in just being a genuine Bluesman than a "Rockstar", so that's what he did. He helped resurrect Muddy Waters career producing several Grammy winning albums with him.

I believe that was recorded in a small club in Copenhagen, 1970. The whole show is amazing, i think he did a version of "Johnny B Goode", seems like the song was written for him.

First JOHNNY WINTER album i bought was SECOND WINTER, a three sided vinyl LP. It's my favorit JOHNNY WINTER album still today. Saw him play in the Netherlands about 35 years ago, in a small place. His guitar playing was amazing. Close up you could really see the unbelieveble speed and accuratie of his fingers. My favorit song is I LOVE EVERYBODY from the Second Winter album. He switches from regular playing to slide in this one, excellent!! Thank you verry much, Harri and Uncle, loved this one. 👍👊😁 More please 😉👊

I m so glag i saw that guy on stage in a small venue downtown Montreal at ( Le Spectrum ) on Ste- Catherine Street ! I was just walking by and noticed people entering the venue and when i saw the poster ! Holy Moly ! i went to the ticket booth to see if there was still room and yes there was and i was sitting at a small round table right in the middle up on the mezzanine ! the perfect view and waitresses serving cold beer ! My god ! how can i forget that ! he was wearing a cowboy hat ( stetson ) and cowboy boots ! actually from Texas i m pretty sure ! incredible guitarist ! His kid brother Edgar is also pretty good on the keyboard ! I can t remember what year he passed but we all miss him ! 🙏🎸

Sadly Johnny's life was full of "trials and travails", a few years after this at the height of his career, he developed a heroin habit hung out with Jimi Hendrix & Janis Joplin, thankfully went into rehab rather than going the overdose route, stayed addicted to methadone for 25 years, he was down to 90 pounds and barely making it through shows. His manager kept him out of the loop and away from help of others until Paul Nelson came along who got Johnny cleaned up, got him back on the road playing great and produced a number of albums including his Grammy winning album unfortunately posthumously. Check out the last video Death Letter, it is bittersweet, an older man who lived a hard life, just a few months before passed but could create such beautiful music. He went out like a true bluesman, on the road, doing what he loved.

Harri , I can see the connection with you and the blues, just by watching this video. This kind of music grabs you by the soul and won’t let go. I had the extreme pleasure of seeing him live at the Sacramento blues festival back in the 90s. What I remember most is the sheer force of his performance. It almost literally blew me away. He was by far the best live performer I saw at that blues festival and I went for several years.

I love that you're into Johnny Winter! This dude is the real deal! Yes, he lived an entire life full of trials and travails. He is legally blind, he and his brother both suffer from albinism. He was addicted to heroin but managed to kick it after Janis Joplin died, he was one of her contemporaries. If you're truly interested in the story of Johnny Winter, there's a book called "Raisin Cain: The Wild and Raucous Life of Johnny Winter".

Harri, what a great reaction and analysis of "The" Bluesman. I was fortunate enough to see him at least 20 times in my life and he was outstanding every time. He could rock with the best of e'm but his true love was the blues and he played them with such love. When asked how he would like to be remembered he said :"As a Bluesman". R.I.P. Johnny

Had the very good fortune to see Mr. Johnny Winter on three occasions, and he delivered each and every time. The man was, RIP Johnny, a master guitarist and producer. His singing was, well, soulful, if not sublime, and edgy. His brother Edgar was quite good as well, understatement.

I once saw Johnny totally eat Boz Scaggs lunch in an ax war in the early 80s at SMU. He was merciless and top top tier. His version of Rock and Roll Hoochie koo is the BEST version better than Edgar’s better than Rick Derringers. Sadly, his life was full of pain and sadness. I saw one of his last performances in a local club, he had to sit and was basically blind. God bless Johnny Winters

Johnny has long been one of my favorites. I saw him probably half dozen times in intimate club settings and large venues as well. I first heard him on his LP Still Alive And Well which is great but more rock than blues. For pure blues check out his first LP released in 1969. Killer delta blues on that one. And also he played on and produced Muddy Waters on several late 1970s albums. Hard Again being the best. Listen to Little Girl, Bus Driver or I Want To Be Loved from that LP.

Yeah Johnny Winter had troubles. He was a junkie. His eyesight degenerated due to his albinism. He only had a brief period of general public popularity. One of the best guitarists ever.

No one could play those kind of rifs, all while singing at the same time. 99.9% of all blues players will sing the line and then play the response. Not Johnny.
