I'm glad you caught that, I was going to scroll through the comments to see if anyone mentioned that. Also, I few years back Dollarama only had "off brand/copycat" cereal and cookies, one of my friends is on 'ODSP'(disabilities support) and when the deposit came in he'd rush to Dollarama and buy tons of them. Whenever someone tried to tell him how bad they are in terms of sugar content and preservatives, he just said "who cares, it's cheaper". Although I agree, when someone repeats a consptracy theory like the "they sell toxic things/food", it goes to show rhat some people just like to believe in nonsense.

You're lying about that price. 2L Pepsi at a Loblaws location, such as Superstore is not $3.99. It's $1.99, anyone can look directly on the Superstore website and see that price for themself. You're clearly in the business of promoting a false idea that groceries "are so expensive" in Canada. Which conservative do you work for?

Completely false, dollarama does not specifically seek out discounted merchandise to sell. Maybe educate yourself about why Dollarama can offer items at lower prices. And also about the exchange rate of USD versus CAD. And that prices you see in American supermarkets and stores basically work out to the same price once you convert from US dollars to Canadian.

I made a similar price comparison at the Dollarama and Food Basics at Yonge and Sheppard and the Loblaws at Empress Walk. I found Food Basics is cheaper than Loblaws, but a little more than Dollarama on regularly priced items. I heard from an ex-employee that theft is a problem at the Food Basics self check-outs. Actually, for the best pricing on vegetables and fruit, the markets on Spadina Ave., in Chinatown, are the cheapest. No expensive overhead like the big chains.

We left Canada to move to Europe and the stores are generally way smaller and have fewer products, and everything costs a fraction of what it is at home. Local grocery stores don't even have push carts, the aisles are extremely narrow. You take a little hand basket and go. You also don't buy groceries once a week racking up massive bills with a cart full of stuff, you shop daily or every other day.

I applaud the effort and awareness of differing grocery prices but the thing that's getting lost in all of this is that Loblaws tends to market itself to those who don't necessarily need to pay attention to prices. When they opened their No Frills stores years ago, their plan was to cover the higher and lower income markets...and thus, the further divide of the classes began. The corporates who own Dollarama are doing the same damn thing. For those of us in smaller cities, you will notice that any Loblaws stores are in the wealthier parts of the city. For example in London's east end, there are three No Frills, two Food Basics and a Freshco but not a Loblaws in sight. I only shop at these "lower-priced" stores but have snooty friends who wouldn't think of stepping foot in one. These corporate grocery chains love to capitalize on this snootiness.

We may not have Loblaws in BC but we do have other stores in their chain: Real Cdn Superstore, Wholesale Club and Shoppers Drug. The boycott is also not just for May. When people make the effort to switch supermarkets, learn a new store layout and their stock, AND see that they're saving 25-30%, AND the produce doesn't rot in 2 days, they never go back. I don't mind Dollarama for some pantry items, sometimes they can be comparable or even overpriced so make sure to check and do the math on the per gram rate. I think Marketplace on CBC did an investigative story into this and found that some items were way more expensive when compared to other grocers.

An interesting comparison, would be to take a dozen products, and do a price comparison between all of the nationwide chain stores. Loblaws, Wal-Mart, Safeway, and a larger independent grocer. Unlike a regular grocer Dolarama, other than bread, carries relitivally shelf stable groceries. They don't have to factor in the losses of perishables, such as meat, vegetables, dairy, frozen food. As for the boycott, my local Extra Foods hasn't seen any affect. Most people I've spoke with, either asked "what boycott?", or they just laughed. That location has a Wal-Mart parked across the street, and a Dolarama half a block away. Most people generally make the rounds. What I found interesting was the prices at that Loblaws in the middle of Toronto are higher than the Extra Foods prices here in the middle of BF nowhere Bring Cash, (B.C.).

Thanks for this video. As opposed to one commenter, I do find it to be a 100% valid like-for-like comparison of the exact same products, or at least recognized brand names that are close enough in quality, i.e., Kleenex vs Royale, or Tide vs Gain. Since Dollarama generally offers smaller sizes, the cost per ml or L is a valuable comparison. I’m lucky because I have a Dollarama directly beside Superstore, so I buy whatever brand names I can find in Dollarama first (or store brand things that I know I like), and then go into Superstore for everything I couldn’t find. Superstore is absolutely cheaper than all the other standard grocery chains in Alberta for most items. Of course there are exceptions and competitors do offer some great sales on certain products. Take your flyers or apps with you - almost every retailer will match like-for-like brands they carry in the same size/quantity.

Thank you for this video. I have always avoided Dollarama for eatable items. Somehow I thought that the brands are fake or they import the items from countries with lower product quality. Does anyone have information about the quality of the items? Are lays chips, for example in Dollarama and a major grocery store produced in the same factory?
@judes966
@judes966 12 күн бұрын
As far as I know and can tell, they are exactly the same. I’m not sure why any brand would ruin their reputation by wholesaling lower quality items to any retailer. That’s a production nightmare to start off with, having to have separate production lines for two streams of quality. They would be shooting themselves in the foot. For the most part, they sell high volume in smaller sizing to dollar stores to support lower consumer pricing.

I get it and I'm not standing up for THE CORP Loblaws - however, you exclude the fact that Loblaws employees are paid better, have benefits and and better employee protection rights & protections. Working at Dollerama is a crap hole, no respect and no benefits. You can't have it both ways.

Thanks for this. I can't say I'm surprised at the results here. You go to Loblaws et al because they have fresh produce, meats and things like the cooked food section and decor (which I have to say, was really nice for a supermarket), and you I think you pay a bit of a premium for other products to "make up for" product spoilage and because, well, you're already there. Dollarama has less options, but they don't have to concern themselves as much with product shelf life. I would be curious to see how a No Frills would compare. I'd imagine that Dollarama still comes out on top, but the results will be much closer.

Solution, For every dollar the big grocery stores earn in profit, a percentage of each dollar should go towards reducing the prices for the things that matter. let's vote for that a country's poverty is largely due to the hoarding of wealth by a few. if a country only prints and issues a limited amount of money the more rich people hoard that wealth it makes the worker ever more poorer. since the 80s the charts and graphs show that the CEOS are paying the worker less and hoarding more of the companies wealth to themselves. when it should be in the pockets of those who work.

*Competition in the grocery sector is not the solution, because 1 or 2 companies own the rest of the so called competition.* Which grocery stores are owned by Loblaws? They include: Atlantic SuperstoreTM, Dominion®, Loblaws®, Maxi®, No Frills®, Provigo Le Marché®, Valu-MartTM, Real Canadian Superstore®, Wholesale ClubTM, Your Independent GrocerTM and ZehrsTM.

For years now, the price I pay for my groceries is half the price that I would pay at No Frills, and less than half the cost if paid at Loblaws. In my last shopping, taking PC Optimum points gain to the max, I paid a total of $39.15. At No Frills it would have added up to $87.60, and at Loblaws it would have added up to $98.51. And so it is darn funny that the store I shop at is owned by loblaws. Anyhow, I spent $77.71 (Tax included) and obtained $38.56 worth of PC Optimum points on that last shopping, thus the total cost for me was $39.15.

Nice to see Dollarama, our Dollar stores are nothing like that and are shutting down. We still pay only a Dollar for trash bags though! Those 2 ltr bottles used to sell for 69 Cents a few years ago.Dollar Store food is NOT always as safe as you might expect. Vitamins, & Spices from China can be problems. Good Video!

I think one of the reasons Dollarama can kick Loblaws butt is because the money wasted on the 'ambiance of their stores cost more so a greater overhead can result in higher prices. I have never seen that brand of potato chips you showed at Dollarama but that was an amazing price. More crunch, for less cash. TY

I bet Lablaws landed cost is less, meaning their profit margins are much higher. They should be audited to find out what their profit margin increases have been from a year before covid until now. Then have the regulatory board force them to go back to profit margins they were making pre covid.
