Have you every tried joining 2 Snatch straps together? What did you use to stop them knotting together? If you do have a knot try this TRICK to TAKE KNOTS out of straps, rope or pretty much anything! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jpligpuDr8qWZWw.html

@MadMatt4WD At 5:49 you have pushed the green loop through the red loop and then fold the green loop over to pull a bight of the green strap through the green loop. This is what causes the green loop to become "inside out". One can easily avoid this and still have to pull just one strap through in the following way: Suppose you've pushed the green loop through the red loop again. Now don't bend the green green loop over, but take a bight of the RED strap and pull it through the green loop. So you combine the correct knot shaping of your first method with the ease of just having one strap to pull through of your second method.

Have you tried just rolling the spare snatch up a few times, and wedging it in between the other loops. Works for me and keeps me from having to cut up an otherwise good strap.
@MadMatt4WD
@MadMatt4WD 7 ай бұрын
I’m not sure how that would work. I believe it would creat stress risers in the strap.
@Bwanar1
@Bwanar1 7 ай бұрын
Only need 2 or 3 layers. You'll never notice the difference. The bend hardly noticeable. the excess strap will likely act as a parachute, in the event the union is over-stressed. @@MadMatt4WD

Joining two straps is an interesting topic. I was taught in my training that this shouldn't be done. However, sometimes it can be useful when you need a gentle pull. Have you ever wondered why all snatch straps are the same length? Why don't they just make a longer one you can buy? or a shorter one? My take on this is that the length of the strap controls the amount of energy that can be stored. With twice as much material, when stretched to its limit, it will be storing twice as much energy as a standard length strap. You mentioned toward the end of the video that having two straps doesn't increase the pulling power, that is correct and incorrect depending on how you look at it. Two straps together will store the same amount of energy as one strap assuming that the vehicle puts in the same amount of energy. Here is the problem, with two straps, there is more length which allows the vehicle if driven aggressively, to put in more energy over a longer period of time before something breaks. It would be possible to put in double the amount of energy before the strap broke. As it's being put in at half the rate ( a sort of mechanical advantage ), it is possible to overload the straps more easily. Now here is the kicker, the width of the strap defines it's breaking strain. Even though you now have double the amount of energy stored, the breaking strain will be the *lesser* of the two straps so potentially the combination is easier to break than a single strap. You potentially end up with a situation where you have double the energy stored with the same or greater chance of breaking the strap combination. Interesting that kinetic ropes can be purchased in a variety of sizes. I assume that this is due to their much higher breaking point. I was taught that if you need more length, extend the strap with a non-elastic strap. Might be an interesting topic for Robert Pepper. Thanks for the video.

Go watch Roberts video on kinetic loads generated with a speed increase. It's terrifying the amount of energy generated.
@biggs8729
@biggs8729 2 жыл бұрын
So, the problem with your logic is this. Let’s say that you have a 10 inch bungee cord that when you stretch it out to 15 inches it generates 10 pounds of force at the end. Now let’s say that you have a 20 inch bungee cord that you can stretch out to 30 inches. It’s going to have twice as much energy stored in the cord, but it’s going to be divided over twice the distance and it’s still only going to have 10 pounds of force at the end. The advantage of having a longer strap is that once you have input enough energy to move your stuck vehicle, the elasticity of the longer strap will pull twice as far, but not twice as hard.
@neutronstorm
@neutronstorm 2 жыл бұрын
@@biggs8729 that is all correct. The problem is if the recovery doesn't go as planned and the vehicle doesn't move. The recovering vehicle has a longer run up, energy rises with the square of speed so its likely that energy input will be greater. Also, the power is applied over a longer period of time. All of this increases the possibility of the system reaching breaking point. If it does, the energy stored will be around twice as much. Using a doubled strap can be useful, but beware of the hidden dangers.

Hey mad matt you should do a fail test on 2 snatch straps joined together! Its lethal ,double the length , double the run up & double the chance of disaster. The knot it self has enough weight to create a missile . I used a small stick in the connecting loop that weighed 2 oz & the whole thing went through the front windscreen & exited out the rear window narrowly missing my face when the strap failed (broke ) I was unaware that snatchem straps have a fuse ( fail point) were they will break. This changes your mindset if you know they will break if taken to their limits which happens most times in a recovery situation . The moment it breaks its dangerous .

Pretty sure it was too much enthusiasm by the puller, under sized, or damaged straps. I've done a lot of tugging with them over the years and never had an issue. Did learn a lesson in my early days about pulling with a chain. Decades before the internet or available instruction. We learned by trial and error. My favorite was a tug boat rope about 2" diameter; before proper snatches were around.
@johnduregon9028
@johnduregon9028 7 ай бұрын
Yep definitely over enthusiasm on my behalf but thats what happens in allot of recovery situations especially with two straps joined together with twice the length / stretch run up ! ( not my situation ) but at the beach ,few drinks , bit of an audience what could go wrong! Im just emphasising snatch straps have a fuse & are designed to fail if taken to their limits & when joined together the connecting knot wether you use a small stick or not has enough mass / weight to become a misile ! Im still haunted by what could’ve happened.

Great idea but you’ve got the proper connection device on the back of your vehicle….it’s called a shackle. I connect straps together often when influencing the direction a tree falls and in the absence of a shackle, I use a suitable size green, not dry branch in the same way you are using the strap piece. Many ways to solve the same problem🤔 🤦Edit: I should have read some of the other comments before commenting as I now see where you’re coming from as in a strap failure and ensuing projectile so I apologize if my comment seemed harsh or judgmental. My usage of straps (slow load increase) never brings the straps anywhere near their failure mode.

Interesting demonstration for connecting straps. For me there is a much simpler technique yet it produces the same figure 8 knot connecting both straps: 1. Put loop from strap one through loop of strap two. 2. Put the other end of strap two into loop one that was put through strap two loop. 3. Pull lines together, dress the knot. 4. Add a paper, magazine or the like to the knot.

Have to disagree slightly with that last thing you said there. I mean, I guess if you gently stretch out your strap and then pull, mass times traction is where your energy comes from, but most of the time, energy is equal to mass times speed.
