I love what they did to Fugo's backstory in the anime. Don't get me wrong, PHF version is great. He has a reason to hate his violent side and to fear how furious he can become over smallest things. Whereas here what he does could be actually considered as justice and self defence. It's totally understandable and nothing to blame of. And that's the thing. In this version, Fugo sees himself as someone unpredictable, as a violent attacker where in reality he is the victim all along. First he develops psychological issues before the age of 13 due to stress under which his parents put him. Then he gets effing molested by his teacher, so he loses it and acts the only way he knows to defend himself. He gets punished for it, disowned by his parents, and treated like garbage by everybody. Heck, even the narrator himself blames him here! And so he believes he's only capable of hurting people and he's best of alone. Not that he ever had any friends. And just take a look at his Stand, the personification of his soul. He hates it. He considers himself a deadly virus to both friends and foes. This boy hates himself for something he had no fault in. For something that all those awful adults in his life brought him to. And even now, when he found friends he can trust, he's not likely to tell them his story and finally hear that it's just. Not. His. Fault. TL;DR imo this version is tragically awesome cause our cheese boi is now a victim who sees himself as an attacker because of what he's been told by all folks around him

It hurts me to see how everybody thought of Fugo as a terrible person. He did something that's extremely hard to do. He stood up to someone trying to assault him and lost control. Honestly, I can't see him as anything but a victim in this scenario.

the book scene hits home a lot, the manipulation, the unwanted touching, the broken trust. no one should ever have to go though that.

I'm so happy David productions gave him a proper backstory. Granted Ik it's not exactly the same but I don't care, I'm just glad he got SOMETHING.

I have always related to this backstory and have watched it many times. Fugo has a special place in my heart because I have been through the same situation as him (high academic pressure in college at a young age + child molestation by a teacher) and have the same emotional anger issues. I get violent like him, this is why he is one of my favorite Part 5 characters. I think he is underrated.

Both Kakyoin's encounter with Dio and Fugo's backstory has an imagery of a flower (1:48), suggesting defloweration. It's really scary how it heavily implies they both were sexually assaulted.

Given from Fugo backstory, I can understand why Purple Haze has some of the qualities it has. Constantly cleaning itself to clean the impurity it has, the mouth being shut off from talking about the event that scared him. Those signs were clearly there the whole time as a representation of what happened in his childhood. But what about the virus? What does that have to do with Fugo?

the fact that Fugo was abused his whole life explains alot about his temper, once people that are abused during a certain moment of their life or their entire life tend to have a very explosive temper that can continue for years, although the severity of outbursts may decrease with age. Being exposed to a type of violence (physical, verbal or sexual) at an early age makes it more likely that they will exhibit these same traits as they mature, just like Fugo...

Meeting Bruno was the first time that someone simply accepted Fugo as he was, and didn’t try to push him or change him for their benefit. He saw a lonely, angry, impulsive boy, and he wanted to help him be more- simply by showing him the respect he was due and helping him if and when he needed it.

Let’s see, on one hand, the story about him walking out on his final for his grandfather showed his more sentimental side. But here it shows a more developed side. Very torn here

I honestly feel bad for Fugo. He displays fits of rage as a kid, even stopping himself because he doesn't want to be a bad person. To make matters worse he was groomed, only making his anger worse and finally snapping.

You see, Fugo is criminally underrated and tragic. He was put under a lot of stress from his parents due to his IQ, and that developed his violent nature, but he tries keeping it in check, and at a very early age, he gets put into a college, and a professor, who he looked up to, molested him, possibly more than once. Fugo snapped, and no one heard from him, and he KNOWS he’s violent, which is why he hates purple haze. He knows it’s a very unstable stand, the stitches show that he remains silent, but it screams due to the rage within him, along with his distorted voice, showing how his anger is in humane. And the virus is how he sees himself to others. TL;DR, Fugo is a tragic kid, with many layers, and a good character.

As many others have pointed out, this is different from the backstory found in the Shameless Purple Haze novel, but I think this one is the real one. Here's my reasoning: I've read Araki's book, Manga in Theory and Practice, and in that book, he says whenever he creates a new named character, he comes up with at least 60 pieces of information for that character based on a reference sheet he created early on in his career (that's why we know so much about Senator Wilson Phillips despite him being little more than a glorified prop, by the way). One of those pieces of information is "formative experiences as an infant/young child." He would definitely put something in there for every one of his characters (Kira and the Mona Lisa, anyone?), and the fact that every other member of Bruno's Team got their backstories illustrated in the manga, but Fugo's remained vague and unexplored should seem off. Now that I've had time to reflect on it, I think the question isn't "why wasn't it shown?" but "why couldn't it be shown?" That leads me to my second point: Araki is a boundary-pusher. He's always been trying to see what he can get away with before he gets pushback. Examples include: B.T. being the main character despite being a self-serving prick, Will A Zeppeli having a mustache in an era where that marked a character as being shady and untrustworthy, Lisa Lisa being both a woman and a expert warrior, Tsuji Aya being implied to be a lesbian, the homosexual undertones found throughout Part 5, and Part 6 having multiple female leads in a genre whose target demographic is boys aged 5-16, (oh yeah, and Anasui was supposed to be a woman and still wanted to get with Jolyne, but Araki's editor put the kibosh on that one). Point is, this is the kind of plot point Araki would use as a means to test the waters, and manga readers will remember that he gave a similar backstory to Steel Ball Run's Ringo Roadagain, so (tl;dr) my conclusion is: Araki floated this idea to his editor while the manga was being written. The editor rejected the idea of outright showing it since that was way too much for 1990's Shounen Jump, so he kept the plot point but left the reason why intentionally vauge. But now that it was the 2010's, and the anime was more "general audience" rather than "strictly Shounen," Araki and the anime team felt they could get away with depicting the scene in full.

Damn, Fugo......you shouldn't have had to go through that. I'm glad that David Production fleshed out his backstory, but......damn.

Fugo’s my favorite of all out of the gang members. Not because of Purple Haze, but how he got purple haze, and how brutal it is due to his anger and stuff. It feels like his rage... is never away from him, but it’s always apart of him. It really shows the tragedy of Stand users. Plus I know it’s araki’s favorite too

Fugo's past was relatable . I used to have an explosive temper as a kid ; and i desperately tried to hold it back. Until some asshole comes into my house and saying despicable things which i forgot ; and i threw a TV right into his head.

Wow, this completely threw me off guard when I was watching the episode earlier. I kinda thought they wouldn't give him one at all seeing as how he has no real backstory in the original (Since PHF isn't actually canon and all that). I like it, makes him fit into their little fucked up group of gangsters a bit better. Plus, at least for me, it's a lot more relatable than the PHF version.

The "again" in the professor's dialogue and the fact that Fugo was shamed and punished for what that bastard did, no wonder he can't bring himself to stand up to Diavolo.
