This guy is truly a legend of our time. He pretty much pioneered a new style of music. His abilities on drums are jaw dropping, but more importantly I truly believe he's constantly pushing organic electronic music to the next level.

MC...Jojo has been doing this decades longer than Mark, no discredit to mark...but Jojo has managed to stay relevant with the addition of triggers and electronics to drumming. Jojo has ridiculous technique and articulation, his creativity is analog. I'm sure Mark will say the same.

Ethan Foster the musical context is not important. of course, there are lots of drummers, especially the old masters (krupa for example) not using a significant technique as buddy did. i agree, jojo is an extremly good drummer. extremly talented. but not that inventive, just because he uses a lot of buddys techniques playing along electronic music, he is not very special. i like his idea of inner hearing and his philosophical thoughts beyond playing the drums, that's impressive, but as an very (very, very, very) talented musician, he has not created new remarkable ways to play the drums, exept of his stunning bass drum work.

I remember seeing you on a VHS tape on the TV in Guitar Center in 1998. It utterly blew my mind. It changed my life in the way I taught myself drums.. I tirelessly tried to mimic your use of drum and bass phrases and the way I approached writing soundscapes and percussive expressions in my own music. Being you live in NYC I hope I get to meet you someday and say thank you.

THIS was the most epic docummentary I've seen! So fucking inspiring and totally amazing... I saw him for the first time in Sweden last year, it was totally mind blowing to see him play! After all years studying his playing, every video I saw of him, every new song from Nerve I heard... and now suddenly standing right infront of him talking and sharing some card magic tricks after the show?!... I couldn't believe it, it was so unreal. A true living legend, I'll never forget that day! Thank you!

Such a documentary states how important is the environoment in wich you grew up, to become the person you are. Talent is the base for everything, but travelling, having a family which supports you and in the end having the right means gives you the chance to become a "big" as Jo jo Mayes is.

@testplmnb
@testplmnb 7 жыл бұрын
It's not completly about the change itself. It's about losing a stability and security, and that's why people fear it, especially that we live in very "insecure" world. People do fear about losing everything that they wasted so much time on. You see, Jojo said that he is accustomed to change, but there is always one thing that brings him feeling of stability, security - his drums. He has these drums he can take it whenever he wants to, and it's providing him home and food, no matter where he lives and that's why it's his footing and yes, he worked soo hard to achieve it.
@m.schlagwerkzeug39
@m.schlagwerkzeug39 7 жыл бұрын
Indeed, in Jojo´s case it´s his drums which creates a stability/security/home. Therefore it´s a different understanding of home than most might understand the term "home".

Congratulations, this is a magnificent documentary! As a drummer, as a musician, Jojo Mayer is one of the greatest artist in the world and for me, he is a modern philosopher who redefines the musical vision of our time. I think we need that much, artists like him to build up the whole music industry. Other way, his story is impressive and inspirational. He tells us, how he begins music and how he grows with music. He tells us the essence of drumming and developing with in the electronic music. With NERVE, his acoustic drum is integrating with digital sounds. Coorporation with analog and digital. Company of old times and modern times; past and the future... That's why you follow him, listen him. This is a new vision... In this part i am sending you a massage with this commentary: Once i got a chance to watch Nerve live in İstanbul at Babylon. I would be very happy see you again in İstanbul.

About 3 years ago I found Jojo Mayer on youtube. needless to say I was amazed at his skill level and also surprised I had not heard of him before. His Ted talk gave me much needed affirmation. I decided years ago to play a very minimal kit. In his Ted talk he spoke of how when we minimize the creative process begins...something to that effect...lol. It was comforting to hear such a dynamic drummer say this. It not only gave me the added boost I needed to stick to my guns but the knowledge and comfort of me not being alone in this belief. This documentary is a nice glimpse into his life and past. I can honestly say he comes across as a true artist who is unafraid of pursuing his passion in life. Jojo you are an inspiration to me and countless others! thank you for sharing your art and wisdom !! sincerity,the minimalist drummer.
