That scene is so excruciating. So much pain in his life and he can’t even cry. When he inhales it sounds like he’s crying, but when he wants to cry out it comes out as laughter. It makes one feel so terribly bad for Arthur. Incredible job by Joaquin Phoenix.

Joaquin is beyond superb. His laugher could easily be interpreted as cryIng. I find it so amazing how the sound we make at the extremes of joy or pain sound so similar. A brilliant film/character study that makes you question Joker within yourself; and learn to know the boundaries.

What I like about in this iteration of one of Batman’s archenemies is that instead of the laughing that sounds insane, Phoenix manages to make the character’s bouts of insane laughter painful and forced; a way to make us sympathise with the character even more.

This laughter is actually a genuine condition, pseudobulbar affect. It originates from a traumatic head injury and can cause uncontrollable outbursts of laughter or crying, sometimes both at the same time. There is a guy on youtube with pseudobulbar affect, which i think is what Joaquin based this laughter off. The fact that the laughter is almost strangulating. I'm not a person with pseudobulbar affect, but it hurts even for me to laugh, imagine having to deal with this everyday of your life, with people judging you.

2:50 not a lot of people seems to mention this scene but for me this is the most saddest scene of the movie. Arthur is probably at the rock bottom of loneliness after his mom was moved to hospital and discovering that his relation with Sophie was made up by his twisted mind. He's all alone with his painful condition.
