The director has said Arthur's only genuine laugh is at the end with the psychiatrist in Arkham, but I agree. That one felt very real as well. More of a chuckle than a full on laugh, but still felt genuine.

The laughing scenes in the Joker are so uncanny, because he almost never laughs because he finds something funny, but because of his neurological condition. It's actually heartbreaking. A sad clown that is literally unable to cry, because he bursts out in hysterical laughter every time.

For an actor to laugh while being able to portray pain in his face at the same time. Amazing. He really deserves the Oscar. He set a huge emotional tone through the whole movie. He was brilliant.

When he’s in the bar watching stand up comedy and fake laughing while looking around to see that what the comedian was saying is funny to others and writes it down to practice and try to fit in with society, the movie broke my heart. He really wanted to fit in and be a comedian 🥺 if only he had the help needed and good people in his life, but everything in his life just broke him piece by piece until he felt nothing 😔 Joaquin Phoenix DESERVED that Oscar 👏🏻

Ali Shabbiri yes I know people have this condition and I actually have a relative with this condition. But Arthur’s not a loser for having this condition. He’s a loser because he can’t accept the fact that he has hurdles to overcome because of it. My cousin had it and despite it he’s a skilled chemistry professor. Arthur has made nothing of himself but a clown. Any joker would shoot his brains out for a cheap laugh

I think at that point it seemed like Arthur’s excruciating laughter was out of pain and misery after finding out the real truth behind the mother. It’s as if he was so painfully hurt that his laughter suddenly turns to hurtful tears of sadness and distraught.

If he were to ever break out of arkham and go on some sort of killing spree, he'd probably completely lose his sense of empathy, which wouldn't cause as much stress, which wouldn't cause his uncontrollable laughter. As the joker, he'd probably laugh like this a lot. Which is cool. Sounds more like a classic joker laugh. Maybe when he does something REALLY fucked up, he'd laugh uncontrollably, which is even more joker-y. His condition adds so much depth to his character.

Nice. Makes clear that before, his "laughter" was painful, usually in the context of foul behavior towards him. But then it increasingly becomes an expression of his "liberation" (or retaliation), as he transforms into Joker.

You don't have to be socially anxious to be treated like trash. Even social, stable and confident people have to deal with rudeness and insensitivity, too. Socially anxious folks just feel emotional pain more intensely instead of being able to brush it off and move on like normal ones...
