Nicholson's joker is much more like the one in the comics. Always smiling, always has a joke, and not a sliver of sanity. Heath's joker is more like if the joker existed in real life.

TheBlues32 what’s wrong with making him the one responsible for killing Batman’s parents? I thought this a very good change. And what’s wrong with giving the joker a definitive backstory? Remember, this is just a movie and it’s not canon with the comics so it really shouldn’t matter if he has a backstory. Also it makes sense he was a bad person before falling into the chemicals, because just getting their skin bleached isn’t enough reason for a normal person to become a psychopathic murderer. He was a horrible person to begin with; just falling into the chemicals pushed him over the edge. I’m not trying to be rude with this comment, just stating my opinion

@UC47dtKlSIVeIy7R-HOaK8Sg Well, for one thing, that makes him a good ten years plus older than Batman. Jack Nicholson already looked too old for the part, this just drives it home. Two, it provides further backstory to a character who isn't meant to have a definite backstory. Three, it's a bizarre coincidence that serves no purpose to the plot.

The maniacal laughter after the line "I'm glad you're dead!" really reinforces how he has changed from Jack Napier to Joker, and his barely holding his new self in during the meeting was brilliant.

I love how he tried for all of ten minutes to be the Don and keep up appearances, but then decided to murder everyone and start poisoning babies instead lol If the other Family heads had been agreeing with him, Joker might have kept the mob alive as a money maker. Once someone said 'No', that was it. Grissom's money will be used to destroy everything and hurt people for no reason.

Jack Nicholson’s Joker is a grossly underrated interpretation of the character and doesn’t get anywhere near as much credit or acclaim as it deserves. For a character that has a rich history of incredible portrayals, both on screen and voiceover, this performance is often overlooked in favour of Heath Ledger and more recently, Joaquin Phoenix. They’re all incredible performances in their own right!
@ImreNagyM
@ImreNagyM 2 жыл бұрын
see i think the problem is; this movie cam out when the main villains started to become smart or smarter than the hero. like Hans in Die Hard. so Joker (Jack) here was a somewhat “toy” villain, making him misfit for the era. Films started to add layers to their characters, and joker in this movie has only one layer: destroying everything but mainly the Batman. now Ledger’s Joker came out where the layers of the villain and hero are at almost at peak, but we started to show how crazy the real world is. so they became a kind of critique of society. And Ledger’s joker delivers that layer too. that famous interrogation where he is frank about how everyone turns inside out at the first sign of chaos. altough he retained some of the Joker’s “its about the message” sort of function, it is simply much more like an Ogre and onion… it smells bad and makes people cry… and has more layers :) Joaquin makes it even further and this time we are truly about how the world is a joker on its own right… how cruelty and selfishnes turned most of people the joker … and him … he just admits it. now i would say Jack’s Joker is true to the comics of the time, and since his drive is not to show the the world how bad they are, he is proper evil and a classic villain. and that is scary. but his underrated performance was mainly down to the badly timed release / as in the industry moved to a different direction. regardless: its a great movie and superb a cting, so i am not talking it down. just similar what happened to Windows Vista in 2006. Microsoft anticipated that CPUs will run around 6-7-8 GHZ … but what happened is, we were barely running on 2 but we had multiple cores… which the vista kernel just could not take andvantage of. if this movie comes out a few years prior, i am sure Jack would have even got an Oscar for this.

Just because someone like Heath Ledger, Jared Leto, Joaquin Phoenix, Mark Hamill, Cesar Romero or others doesn't mean Jack Nicholson's Joker is underrated. First and foremost it's Jack Nicholson. It's taking Joker and putting that character up against the actors best. Burtons Batman movie has done so much to the Batman character portrayal/writing sense that it's just a different discussion. Everyone is compared to Nicholson's joker. Ledger especially was. If there is ever a serious discussion about the Joker, Nicholson isn't getting skipped.

His serious facial expression as he watches the bosses leave, reveals he's already planning the final details of their demise, which is why he's able to take interest in this "Batman" that's stealing his headlines. He makes a joke about it by having a conversation with a corpse over his resolve to "grease 'em now." The meeting was a formality other than making sure they knew he was taking over by gleefully killing one of the more powerful, himself, right in front of the others.

This is the Joker’s best scene in the whole movie. Jack Nicholson’s evil laugh after he kills Rotelli then talking to his corpse, ending it with “I’m glad you’re dead,” then laughs manically and keeps repeating the phrase and laugh as he walks away and it trails off with him laughing harder every time, is unforgettable. To me, this is one of the most disturbing scenes in cinema history, of any genre. But ironically, hilarious at the same time, and masterfully acted. A strange, rare combo. It is somewhat comparable to the real life Cadaver Synod, where a Pope’s corpse was put on trial by the current, living Pope. I would imagine that this scene shocked a lot of people at the time when it came out, being in a Batman film....and what people typically expected from Batman. This was outright horror.

@@Avrelivs_Gold I disagree. Heath Ledger's Joker was MUCH more than just a crazy street thug. That you don't see that tells me you really didn't pay attention to or understand the character. Crazy street thugs don't set up elaborate schemes to rob a Mob bank successfully while killing all the co-conspirators and walking away alone with the cash scot-free. They don't set up elaborate schemes to turn the District Attorney into a madman hell-bent on killing Gordon's kid. You may not like Heath Ledger's Joker more than Jack Nicholson's, and that's your prerogative, but let's not insult the character by downplaying it.

All the bad guys were unsurprisingly terrorists and good rich American entrepreneur did the saving. That was the theme I the US in the 2000s. That's all those movies actually are. @afriendofbean
@afriendofbean 11 ай бұрын
@NevanSlone Yes, Bob was probably the Joker's favorite henchman which could be another reason why the Joker killed him at the end of the movie because he (the Joker) knew that Batman was going to come back to kill all the henchmen and the Joker probably couldn't stand to watch his favorite henchman Bob get killed by Batman so the Joker decided to kill Bob himself. Otherwise maybe it was all a joke that Bob was the Joker's favorite henchman which is why he's a Joker. It's kind of like, the Joker was in love with Vicky Vale but of course, maybe that was just a joke because he tried to kill her at the end of the movie where she and Batman were hanging off the roof of a high cathedral and he even played another joke on her by metaphorically saying to her, "here let me lend you a hand" like he was going to pull her up but ended up making her grab a fake breakable hand for her to fall.

This is still my favorite Batman movie. From the amazing action packed Danny Elfman theme song to Michael Keaton's and Jack Nicholson's perfect acting. Also the Batmobile is just so awesome looking too and is definitely my favorite design. To me Keaton's role as Batman/ Bruce Wayne is in the same league as Christopher Reeves as Superman. Tim Burton did an excellent job as Director too.

He is the Joker. He is mad, evil, funny and theatrical. I'm not sure why people compare all the Jokers, especially Ledger's and Phoenix's. Those movies are very different and the characters were very different. Not sure why there's such a need to constantly make rankings, etc.

Forbidden Color that shows the difference between the two jokers. Heath's joker was offended by being called crazy because he sees everyone else as crazy. Jack's joker is not offended by being called crazy because he's so far gone he doesn't even care. It's pretty scary either way.

Allegiance Commitment Via Genu Flexion I don't know how you can look at the joker and say he's not crazy that's like saying Donald Trump is not a narcissist. You can argue that the Heath's joker is technically a psychopath or Jack's joker is technically a psychotic but in the broad sense, their crazy. I mean that in the way people use the word crazy in every day life not the actually definition. I know legally crazy or insane is defined as not knowing the difference between right and wrong. So yes in that sense the joker's not crazy. He clearly knows what he's doing is wrong but he's crazy in the way we as people use the word in daily life. Imagine if you were at a meeting and someone just electrocuted someone with a hand buzzer and was laughing all the meanwhile wouldn't think to your self, that guy's crazy?

After revisiting this film multiple times, personally for me Jack still has the edge over Heath. He nailed the balance of the character, both the disturbing and the wacky aspects of Joker including his laugh, lines, appearance, posture, and demeanor. What is the cherry on top is the fact he has a conversation with a corpse, further demonstrating the extra level of insanity that the Joker embodies.

This movie is probably a more comix book accurate depiction of joker but Heaths IMO is far better acted, he literally became a different person. Jack isn't playing that much a different charter then the one he played in the Shining. The best is 90s animated though.
