Right, so, shelves need to be properly supported by shelf triangle brackets and those need to be embedded into the parts of the wall called "studs". Studs are wooden boards, usually about 2 to 3 feet apart evenly spaced depending on the decade it was built but there is a really cheap little device at your local store called a "stud finder" which is used for exactly two things: crude jokes about how much of a stud the person in front of it is or is not, and locating the stud in the wall.
