Heath Ledger took the torch and carried it, he didn't try to redefine nor expand upon an already established character. Instead he refined it, boiled Joker down to his most iconic pure elements and used them to define the role, he paid tribute to what was already there and done so well by those before him.

This was a lovely tribute, thank you for making it. It didn’t sink in for a while after seeing this film in the theater what a profound and thoughtful film it was. Not just as a Batman movie or as a superhero movie, but just as a movie. The whole Batman vehicle was just a framework for saying things about society that might have taken a lot longer to spell out without the ready shorthand of the preestablished Batman mythos.
