I've said it a million times, all you have to do in baseball is do something outside of the norm and players completely panic and screw up. There could be almost any combination of base runners combined with any type of hit, a pop up, line drive, grounder, ricochet, whatever, and all the players would know exactly where to go with the ball to get the maximum number of outs. But the second a guy starts running when he isn't "supposed to" it makes everyones brains melt and they can no longer function. I watched Baez do this for years with the Cubs. Just do something weird and the fielders will get confused like there is a rule they aren't aware of and they will panic throw it away.
@resmarted

They've drilled those plays so many times that they simply react to them reflexively. Really thinking on your feet is totally different. Great point.

This is what I was thinking... Maybe the runner rounding second base was doing it on purpose to try and draw the catcher into a pointless throw so the guy at 3rd could go home and tie the game?? Probably too much thinking to be the case, but it's definitely a smart move if you only have 1 out. Did they have 2 outs? I need to re-watch... **edit, only 1 out, so if the runner passing 2nd got out, but the runner at 3rd made it home, it would be worth it.
@jeffreyhutchins6527
@jeffreyhutchins6527 2 жыл бұрын
Well when you are the 2 and have the ball with bases loaded you don't throw it to 3rd when you between the plate with the bag. That wasn't panic it was a lack of situational awareness.

catcher completely blew it. there are SO many options here on what to do with the ball he could have done: 1) hold on to the ball. you already gave up a run, there is one out though, and you have the double play set up to end the game. 2) throw to the pitcher. get the ball to the mound and react to the bad baserunning if gio gets tripped up. 3) run the ball up to third (weird, but if he was so worried about the tying run that at least stops the madness) 4) throw directly to second. risky, but there are 2 people backing it up (left moved over, center is there). could get gio out since he extended so far. but no, he decides to throw to a runner who is standing still on the bag at third, a mile over his head, knowing there is nobody behind him to back it up.

@fionam3554
@fionam3554 2 жыл бұрын
the run wasn't in yet! The thing to do is run AT the runner between second and third. Make him do something. Maybe a touch BEHIND him. He's hung up, slowly tighten things, Time is your friend. He runs to third, if the runner on third stays, walk to third, tag the guy from second, then tag the guy who was on third and tell them they are both out. Only the guy from second is actually out, but if the guy on third steps off, he's a dummy, NOW you tag him and he is out. Guy bolts from third, chase him down the line far enough he is committed, and throw ahead. Stay in fair ground so he is not in the way of a throw.

I played catcher in little league. Even at that young of an age, you are taught to just run at the runner who’s in the pickle and force them to commit to a base - it minimizes the chances of an errant throw and most of the time they’ll freeze and it’ll be an easy tag out In this case it’s even simpler. If he goes to third just run and tag him out. If he heads back to second run him down until he’s like 10 ft away and it’s an easy toss and tag. the guy on third has no choice but to stay put since you have the ball in your hands Such a basic play

When I saw it live, I was pretty sure Sano thought Larnach was gonna go home, so he waited for the throw to go to second, he goes to second, which made Gio run, I think. Watching it back, Sano is halfway to 2nd and he waits for the ball to be thrown. Looking at Urshela, I think he may have gone either seeing the throw, but a little part of me thinks he sees Sano going and goes to 2nd. I don’t know whether he knew where Larnach was or not. I think he maybe did? Considering if the ball goes home, he should be at third and either get thrown out (and ensure a tie game) or make sure tying run is on 3rd. I don’t know.

All the catcher had to do was throw it to second base and then the pitcher could have focused on striking out the next batter for the winning out.

@@rrecar8684 that’s what I thought at first but a pitcher is more likely to give up a hit trying to get a double play ground ball than to give up a hit trying to get the strikeout. The catcher threw the ball anyway so he should have helped out his pitcher and thrown it to second base for the 2nd out. IMHO

Sano being in the wrong doesn't mean Gio was right to advance. 2nd base was his and he left it to take 3rd when Larnach was holding there. So he's just as much at fault.
@marimbaguy715
@marimbaguy715 2 жыл бұрын
Sano made a bad decision, but ultimately it wasn't gonna cost the Twins an out because he could have easily gotten back to first - no one was covering. Urshela's mistake was most impactful, and there was no reason to run to third at all.

@@cameronroch but then it’s an out. Sano made the first error. Should have been bases loaded. There were many faults here (even Larnach got an awful jump) but Sano nearly ended the game here because he was paying no attention

We learned on my high school team. All the catcher has to do is walk slowly to third with the ball. Throwing to second would be dangerous bc a tag out is required, which then the man on third can try to run home.

Looking at the 3rd base coach position and the base runners position, I have to wonder if gio rounded 2nd and locked in on the 3rd baseman while heading for third thinking the basrunner was the base coach in his peripheral. That happens occasionally
