Jon B. Interview: New Album "Mr. Goodnight", Teaming With Warryn Campbell, Making R&B in the 90's

When Warryn Campbell gave us the news a few months back that he'd be working with Jon B. to produce his upcoming album, we knew good things were in store. After all, Warryn Campbell has an amazing track record since the early 90's and has been the architect behind some of the best adult contemporary r&b songs in recent years. He also similiary helped Musiq Soulchild create his "Life on Earth" album which is one of the best in r&b this year. Warryn made a great choice, as Jon B. has consistently put out quality r&b music for two decades now and he also writes, produces, and puts on a great live show. We'll see the fruits of their collaboration when Jon B. releases "Mr. Goodnight" later this year, his first album in over four years. We sat down with Jon B. once again prior to his recent performance at BB King's in NYC and discussed what to expect on the new album, his chemistry with Warryn Campbell, the spectacle of creating r&b music in the 90's, and much more.

He's a really good artist! What's crazy is that, as a ''white'' man he really got that ''black soul'' … If people listen to some of his music and don't know about him, they probably would think it's a black artist! His album ''COOL RELAX'' is the bomb! One of the most underrated song from the album is: ''Can't Help It'' That song is so good! The beat is so FIRE! Instruments along with that 90's futuristic sound… Great!

I'm so excited about the new music as well. I can't remember the last time I got this excited about any artist music. He so deserves the support. He's such a humble guy which is so attractive.

Oooh, I just love you, Jon B! I'm tellin' you somethin'. When you came out with _Cool Relax_, I was legit obsessed. I even remember the day I bought it. That mahogany brown album packaging really drew me in. Obviously _They Don't Know_ is in a league of it's own, but my two favorites are _Shine_ and _Bad Girl_. Jeff Ward and I danced to _They Don't Know_ at one of our school dances so that song will forever have a place in my heart. And I was lookin' extra cute too. Lawd, here we go with Musiq Soulchild again..... You know, I like him. He confuses the hell out of me, personally, but musically, I like him. I believe he came in during a time when people were really missing D'Angelo and he legit filled that void. His first and second albums were everything. By the time the third album came out, I knew it was time for me to invest in the singles. I got so bored of the whole *I wish the girls would notice me* routine. Each album after the third one had great radio singles, but that was about it for me. His last album had a few coo' lil' songs, but..... Did they stick and sink in? Are you playing them currently or did you go back to _Mary Go Round_ and call it a day like I did? I know what it is and it's all good. Now, Warryn Campbell.....he did all that big talk about Musiq and where did that go? His album went underperformed and uncharted like everybody else's. Jon, bae if you wanna be mainstream and on that radio, you gon have to come with some fire or open up those pockets and pay radio. I'm not tryna be all up in y'all pockets, but realistically, y'all ain't got that kinda money to be toyin' around with. Anyway, I am happy to know that you're doing true blue r&b. I love you, Jon and I always wanna see you win. Oh, and you dropped the ball on _Finer Things_ and _Overjoyed_. Those were singles, if you ask me. I now understand why _Stronger Everyday_ didn't work out. You were signed that Creole heffa's father's label. And you know what that means..... _What in the World_ is my favorite from that one. Finally, good luck with everything and I hope you get the mainstream attention you deserve. It's been way too long. You've been uncharted and you haven't been on the radio since the early 2000's. Please come with some fire. I'm rooting for you.....

As a true Jon B. fan, his first 4 albums were minor masterpieces. From "Bonafide" to "Stronger Everyday" and in between came the mega"Cool Relax". And then for the fans he drops "B Sides".....and honestly it is a great set up to "Mr. Goodnight", you just sense that this will match "Stronger Everyday". No disrespect to "Helpless Romantic" and the other indie releases....not many artists can say they have 4 minor masterpieces.
