We hit the water to test if waxing the bottom of your jon boat will increase its top speed and get on plane faster. Testing with a Coleman Crawdad jon boat and a Mercury/Tohatsu 6HP 4 stroke outboard.

Use any waterproof gloss paint and you will have amazing result.

I have experimented with waxing the hull, and I can say comfortably it keeps the growth off, as well as adding knotts.

My 6hp only gets to 7mph on a 1436. Is it cuz of the weight I carry I usually have 2 people on all the time

I do t know why , my motor only gets to 9 mph .. its a 2019 . Wish it would run like that .

Hi engineer here. Your speed seems to be limited by reaching max rpm. I think the slick vs non slick test is still hiding the true potential. The second faster improvement in time to plane is a clue to huge boost in efficiency. For that to translate to significant top speed change would take altering the propeller pitch. To exploit the difference the most you will need to find the prop with a pitch that is aggressive enough to lower the top speed rpm of the non slick hull but not so aggressive to alter the top speed rpm of the slick hull. If you do this I guarantee you will see at least 20mph.

I love your channel, I like your personality, you are not much spending time on PLEASE subscribe (and I did subscribe for that reason). That said, if your ever check who post on your video, I have a question. I have a similar boat, the Sun dolphin American 12. Engine is a very old but in shape Chrysler 1966 6 hp 2 cyl (well I have 2 of them, bought them for 160$ CAD so it's like 90$ US for 2, ha ha...) My MAX speed is 21kph (13.5 MPH) and that is the max that engine will give me. (yes I am a mechanic and the carburettor is well cleaned and adjusted). For weight reason I want to stay with 6 HP max (60 pounds max). I have seen my boat reach speed Like yours with modern 4 Stroke 6 hp engine.That said, If you or others could chip in as too: are modern 6 HP 4 stroke a bit more powerful? Some fact, my boat with my engine will go on a plane in a few second and will reach max speed fast but that it. Since this is such an old motor I can't find different prop. Many thanks and keep doing those great videos. (yes I am planing to buy a brand new 6 hp soon... but I am on a budget now)
