This speed test was quite fun. At the time I was using a 7.8x8 propeller which was the original. Now I am running with a 7.8x7 propeller. Even though the new prop reduced my top speed to 14mph and get into plane faster and faster off the hole acceleration. I can also get into plane while having another person with me so that's a huge plus.
**SHOP**
I got my outboard from Onlineoutboards.com

These are great videos on the Tohatsu 6HP. Your speeds seem about right for a boat like that. If anything, a little faster than expected. But like you said, though, if you load it down with a second person your speeds will drop considerably. Two people plus gear, I would think 10mph at the most.

When I have 2 11 stone people in my 2.5 meter sib with tohatsu 6hp 2020 and fishing gear for 2 i get about 6 to 8mph in the sea. On my own I get 19 mph but is hard to controll from about 15 mph no fault of the engine. If you are looking to buy an outboard tohatsu are excellent. Mine hasn't come close to letting me down. Pulled off 3rd time after been winterised and stored 7 months.

Zackary Hilton You are correct. Thankfully I’ve already done the 10 hour break in period and oil/gear change
@fiveowaf454
@fiveowaf454 5 жыл бұрын
IMO they definitely need the break in period to be observed rigorously as set out in the manual. I bought mine new in 2016, it's a long shaft and it sat on the back of my 24' Rinker as a backup motor and I only put a couple of hours on it until this last weekend when I put 8 more hours on of my long transom Polar Kraft 14 footer, I really noticed the engine seem to loosen up as the hours mounted, so I wouldn't want to push one hard right out of the box . I had changed the engine oil and the gear oil 3 times despite the low hours to keep on top of annual maintenance etc. before this weekend, so don't know if you'd see any oil contamination during the break in as things wear in - until this weekend the only things getting any wear were the various oil plugs from being removed so often :)
@ErickMartinSucre
@ErickMartinSucre 5 жыл бұрын
Yes I did see some metal shavings after I changed the oil the first time. You can do full throttle but only for a minute around the 8 hour mark. Even now when my motor has about 15 hours I rarely run it full throttle. I usually hang around 1/2 to 3/4 throttle running around 15 mph.I bought an inflatable air deck to replace the hard metal floor and a different prop so my speeds my change a little bit for now on.

Very nice! I understand the weight issue. I also have a 2006 Mercurt 9.9 and I end up using my Tohatsu more often. When you give it full throttle, try to lean your weight forward a little bit. That should help you get into plane quicker

Man, your videos are awesome. Have you ever thought about installing trim tabs on your boat? Some says it makes a big difference regarding speed. I was thinking about it, but storage might become a problem especially when folding the boat. What’s your insight on it?
@ErickMartinSucre
@ErickMartinSucre 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I think they make trim tabs that are retractable, not completely sure about it. Those become very handy when using bigger inflatable boats like 14 footers and such. If you have a smaller boat and maybe a 10hp outboard, it is not needed really.

I'll be happy to say that if you'll be just fine with that 25hp. A 20hp will do just fine as well, to be honest. Tohatsu is a solid choice for outboards, just as good, if not better than Honda and Suzuki outboards. Gotta love Japanese engineering.

Yo Erick- I'm glad I found this vid. I'm considering a 6hp to put on a budget 12' Saturn, as that trolling motor just can't overcome the rivers here in Wa State. I have a somewhat unrelated question about Saturn: The budget boat I have has a flat bottom, and I didn't bother trying to create a keel with a pool noodle, as I can't imagine it's worth the trouble. So the question is, do you consider the Saturns with inflatable keels worth getting, and do they make enough of a difference from the flat bottom boats? I'm not sure I want to go rigid, but an aluminum floor over an inflatable keel may be the improvement I'm looking for without too much investment. And the 6hp on any Saturn should get me around until I graduate to the 15+ foot size. Your opinion is much appreciated! Thanks, buddy.
@ErickMartinSucre
@ErickMartinSucre Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question. The keel help you handle larger bodies of water whene you encounter large swells and white caps. A flat bottom will do just fine on rivers so no worries there.

That is impressive, but is a smaller boat too. I have a 1986 2 stroke 18 hp Tahatsu that I have been super impressed with. It was barely used when I bought it a few years back. With myself and gear, in my 16 foot jon, can get it to about 25 mph, with 2 guys 22 mph. Actually when I 1st got it, before we had the tilt set right, 2 guys and no gear we were about 27-30mph but it wouldnt plane out and was a bit spooky. You should of seen the look on my bro in laws face on test run. All growing up many in my family ran johnson/evinrude and mercury, and this blows them out of the water. I dont remember my grandpas 25hp johnson or my dads 15 hp evinrude, running as good as this 18hp tohatsu. Its truly a power house. Every time I take out someone in the boat, they are surprised with it too. My boat is rated to up to a 25 hp, and I couldnt imagine how crazy a 25 hp tahatsu would be. I bet it would be spooky.

Should i buy a 9.9hp 2 stroke or get a 9.9hp 4stroke? 4 strokes are heavy, and do you think its ok to put a 15hp 2stroke on it? the boat is rated for 10hp outboard and overall carrying weight of 1100lbs. thanks for your time.

I would have recommmended a smaller pitch on the prop if you were by yourself but since you're gonna have passengers and gear it would be a good idea to get a 9.9. I own a 9.9 mercury as well but also kept the 6hp for when I got on small rivers. The 15 hp 2 cycle should be ok since they are lighter than the 4 cycle counterparts.

Thank you 8-) Could it possibly be the trim on the motor? What year is the motor?
@samyates7598

Its a 1967....lol. Trim is at lowest setting. It plains if I sit forward but soon as I mover back it sinks down again. Its a very old engine.

I see. I had a similar problem with my Tohatsu and I put it on the second setting and it plains way better now. You could try that and see if it gets better. So that motor is 50 years old wow

Inflatable boats, also known as rubber boats, many friends now think that inflatable boats are rubber boats and rubber boats are inflatable boats. In fact, there are still some differences. Why? Because many inflatable boats are not necessarily made of rubber, some military emergency rescue boats are made of a lot of high-tech composite materials. It's not rubber, so it can't be called a rubber boat. When we buy an inflatable boat, we often see the title of an inflatable boat and a rubber boat in the same title. Why do we write the title on the same item and what is the difference between the inflatable boat and the rubber boat? From what we generally know, there is no difference between the two. They all can be used the outboard motor of Sea Dog The inflatable boat is also a small inflatable boat, and the rubber boat is also a small inflatable boat. There are so many inflatable boats in the market that we have so many names, such as inflatable fishing boats, inflatable rubber boats, inflatable boats, inflatable boats, rafts, submachine boats, boat boats, canoeing, banana boats and so on. All in all, these are one species, that is, inflatable boats. Here are five basic differences between inflatable boats and rubber boats.
