"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZfaq. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZfaq, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

I love Jon Stewart and have watched him since he had his show on MTV (absolutely loved "Talk Show Jon!). I would LOVE Jon Stewart for President. I just hope we have an election in 2028 given DJT's promise to be a dictator at least "on day one" if he is elected again. I truly believe, if elected, he will attempt to stay in office beyond the four-year term. He already tried it in 2021, and now he's had three more years of planning and more competent co-conspirators. I hope I'm wrong, but I honestly don't think so.

It sucks that after almost 10 years, there's really nothing to show in terms of progress. Bernie tried and lost in 2016 & 2020, Marianne's campaign was smothered in the crib, most if not all the congress people inspired by Bernie may be out of congress by Jan. 2025, and when they were there, they were just kinda pathetic... and I'm saying that as a guy whos a bit more moderate than Kyle. Sucks to say it, but I guess this progressive era, as it seems right at this moment, is just another "progressive movement" footnote in American history that tried and failed... 1910s, 1920s, 1940s, and now 2010s-2020s.

What are you talking about? Yeah, it hasn't been a total success. But to excuse what was gained is absurd. States like California have tuition free community colleges, there is a vibrant anti-war movement, unions like the UAW have regained its vigor, we got a huge climate bill, resurrected manufacturing, got states and Fed contractors $15/hr, passed a child income tax credit that should have been extended, a decent infrastructure bill, and made weed legal in many states. The Democratic Party maybe dismal, but its better and more progressive today than it was in 2016 or any period since the 80's. None of this could have been achieved without Sanders and his movement. It could have and should have been more, but its nothing to be depressed about.

I’ve been saying We need a Jon Stewart presidency for years. I’ve heard so many stories from people who’ve met him cuz he’s just a regular guy and use to take the ferry to Manhattan everyday. They all said the same thing that he’s a really good person and all these 9-11 responders/disabled veteran projects come from the heart.

Don't dare assume Stewart would be a democrat. He (justifiably) lambasts them as much as Republicans. Independent?

Quite a few lefties are saying that we have no one representing us for 2028. I wouldn’t be so sure that. Of course, it would be amazing if John Stewart ran for the White House, but in the scenario that he doesn’t, I wouldn’t be surprised if quite a few formidable challengers with good politics run. Shawn Fain has been great so far is head of the UAW and I think he could do well if he ran for political office (maybe president is a bit much). Then there’s also some of the governors and other politicians that I think would do decent politically and policy-wise. And I’m sure there’s more that could come seemingly out of nowhere. Hope only dies in darkness.

I am so glad this is your first story of the day. The moment I heard about it, I immediately thought "Oh I can't wait to see Kyle's reaction to this." I, too, am ecstatic about this. I haven't had any interest in cable tv in around a decade now. I might just have to break that trend now.

Jon is one of the very few who is both in a good position to run for president without needing super PACs, and genuinely has one of the best moral compasses in a character.

I’ve been calling for him to run for a while. I think he already said he wouldn’t want to, because most people who seek power are never the ones who want to have power. But we desperately need John or someone like him.

J-Stew would be an excellent president, but I really think presidential candidates need to have some political experience; both to be taken seriously by the media, and to have a practice run so that you know you can make the most of your term once you are president. Maybe governor of NJ in 2025?

The simultaneous "retirement" of Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert felt like a coordinated effort to prevent Bernie Sanders from winning the democratic nomination in 2016. I'm not sure I could trust him again.

I was soooooo gleefully happy when I read the news Jon Stewart was going to be back. I loved watching Jon on TDS. He's so smart and witty and obviously a very passionate person who cares about others. I and millions of other people have been wanting him to run for president for years, and he knows it. I'm faced with the reality he probably never will though. I have to check myself though to also see that he can probably easily lead a cult of personality that I may fall into. Jon Stewart is the president we need, but not the one we deserve.

Comedy Central/Viacom acknowledging that, despite the rotating cast of characters, nobody is like Jon Stewart. Liberals like him. Conservatives like him. In this stupidly cancerous polarized political climate, that is priceless. Truly lightning in a bottle. Add to the fact that he is producing the show now means he will have more creative control as he did on Apple, but unlike Apple, Comedy Central can't afford to lose him. He is king Dick now and its great to see people talk about The Daily Show again. I can't wait to see him take a long overdue battle axe to this horrendously crappy era of human existence.
