"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZfaq. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZfaq, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode. “That Raytheon decided they don’t hate gays or trans people - frankly, I don’t really give a shit what their take on that is..."

As someone who’s struggled with my gender identity for years, it’s ridiculous to assume or claim that transitioning is an easy choice. It’s no different than being gay…in that it’s not a choice. It is not glamorous…it’s not popular…it’s not making friends. It’s a hard, emotionally traumatizing decision where you fear losing every friend and family member you have by coming out as a non-cis individual. I’m still not completely out to everyone I know. It’s ridiculous to assume children are making these choices flippantly.

I've been out, living as a non op hormonal trans female for 12 years. What we have here is a fight. It's win or die out there now, but what it really is is the classic left vs right, freedom vs constraint. Thank YOU for weighing in this way. Pandora's box is open now, it's win or die. Nobody is going out of their way to make their lives harder like I’m interested in men and gay men aren’t interested in me because duh gay men aren’t into women. And the people that are interested in me straight men think it’ll make them gay and for most men their straightness is tied to their masculinity

The DSM-5 estimates that about 0.005% to 0.014% of people assigned male at birth and 0.002% to 0.003% of people assigned female at birth are diagnosable with gender dysphoria. According to Black's Medical Dictionary, gender dysphoria "occurs in one in 30,000 male births and one in 100,000 female births." The real question here is why is there any sort of law for something so uncommon? 🤔

Even if it’s 80% or 98%, most every affliction is overcome by most people, that doesn’t mean the treatment should be banned by the state. And most people who feel their symptoms are severe enough for medical treatment- usually require it. 99% of the times I have a migraine, I overcome it with home remedies- however when I go to the hospital, I’m given very strong injections like Sumatriptan. That’s odd! Why don’t they just send me home and refuse to provide medical aid, since I don’t need it 99% of the time?! Is there a cabal of mislead doctors injecting people with unnecessary medicine for migraines- should the State of Arkansas protect people with headaches by banning it!?! Because usually, especially in America where medical care is used as a last resort due to the price, when people seek medical attention is because they need it. When I go to the hospital, it’s because I’m in severe pain, that disrupts my life and does not go away on its own or with any treatment I can provide for myself. When people don’t seek medical attention, which is most of the time, it’s because their symptoms, be it a migraine or gender dysphoria, is manageable.

As fantastic of a person Jon Stewart has become, his abilities would be better used elsewhere in the political sphere, and largely harmful as PODUS. its just weird for kids to change their genders before being given the chance to get accustomed to it by natural development. a baby starts out crawling on 4 but later learns to walk on 2. such an incredible and scary change for the child! but should they be permitted to have this progression "blocked" and stay crawling as a quadruped well into childhood because they dont want to progress? common sense says they would end up with life long consequences if such a critical stage of development was blocked, and puberty is hardly any different.

I do not support performing mastectomies, penile inversions, hysterectomies, metoidioplasties, orchiectomies, or vaginoplasties on anyone under 18 for 'gender affirmation'. This is something that I think only adults can consent to, given that these procedures lower life expectancy and can reduce or eliminate fertility. And yes Kyle, these 'bottom surgeries' ARE sometimes performed on minors - publications used to justify the dysphoria-alleviating benefits of these procedures include their age rage of their studied cohort, and some of them are from American institutions and include people under 18.

Sweden released its long-awaited guidelines for the care of gender-dysphoric youth. These guidelines represent a major departure from the WPATH "Standards of Care," and are a vital step towards safeguarding vulnerable youth from medical harm. Sweden’s new guidelines emphasize that gender-dysphoric youth will continue to receive care. However, health care for gender dysphoria is no longer reduced to “hormones and surgeries.” The recommendations now call out a key role for psychiatric and psychosocial services. The guidelines assert that based on current evidence, the risks of hormonal interventions outweigh the possible benefits. Thus, these interventions (often referred to as "gender-affirming care") will not be available outside of research settings, except as "last-resort." Sweden is realigning with the classic “Dutch Protocol” model, where only early childhood-onset gender dysphoria cases will be considered for hormones and surgeries. Those with post-puberty onset of trans identity will not be candidates for hormones/surgeries as minors. The guidelines highlight the unexplained rapid rise in trans identification in youth, especially teenage girls. They also note the worrying rise of detransitioners & regretters, which contradicts prior estimates of "low regret." They cite Littman 2021. Individuals Treated for Gender Dysphoria with Medical and/or Surgical Transition Who Subsequently Detransitioned: A Survey of 100 Detransitioners - Archives of Sexual BehaviorThe study’s purpose was to describe a population of individuals who experienced gender dysphoria, chose to undergo medical and/or surgical transition and then detransitioned by discontinuing medicatio…link.springer.com/10.1007/s10508-021-02163-w The guidelines also note the lack of knowledge about how to treat "non-binary" youth (the predominant presentation today). They assert that access to medical interventions should be based on the presence of gender dysphoria, rather than the presense of a transgender identity. Sweden is centralizing its gender care for minors to a few centers for highly specialized care. Individual clinics and private providers will not be allowed to provide "gender-affirming" services. The guidelines express concern that little advance in quality knowledge has occurred since "gender-affirming" interventions were first recommended in Sweden in 2015, and that generally, little is known about how to best care for gender-dysphoric youth. In summary, Sweden has changed direction because of a lack of evidence to support medical interventions for gender-dysphoric minors. A new emphasis has been placed on psychiatric care and psychosocial support. Hormonal interventions for minors will be highly restricted.

Read between the lines a bit here. This is no different than when a podcaster ambushes someone in the street with a debate they have prepared for but the random person hasn't. It's really easy to find someone under those conditions to make yourself look like you have the stronger debate. If Jon wanted to debate the critics of gender ideology he would have invited any number of other commentators on the subject. But he didn't. You need to ask yourselves why? Was he really looking to have an honest debate on an important subject? Or was he looking to manipulate the audience?

This is a far cry from some Steven Crowder interview with college kids on the street. She has the benefit of pre-interview preparation (she would have likely had this appointment to appear days or weeks inadvance) AND as a lawyer she has experirnce in crafting arguments in her favor. She even mentioned writing legal briefs about this. To treat this woman like she's been ambushed by some clever manipulator is total horseshit.

Combine that with a Huckabee run and that solidifies Trump-Republican control in the case Sarah wins(unfortunately also likely), and gives an avenue to install her if a non-republic wins the Governor's seat through an attempted removal. @@darkstar4494 not common. Detransition rates are extremely low. Interestingly, detransition rates are essentially non-exist in trans people who transition before the age of 18 because medical transition is much more closely supervised by healthcare professionals in minors, and diagnosis is required before treatment is issued. If you want bodily autonomy, especially for adults, there will always be mentally ill folks who mess up their bodies. These laws also are detrimental to non-trans kids. Kids going through early puberty face difficulty getting it treated. Early puberty can cause some very serious health issues later in life, and is associated with an increased risk of suicide. Girls especially are subject to more sexual assault, sexualization, bullying, poor self esteem, eating disorders, and body image issues. I would know. I had to go through it without help. My life would be so much better if I'd been given treatment. After the parents got over their worries and fears, they just accepted them for who they said they were, no medical treatments needed, just speaking to them and accepting them for who they are, and instantly they saw their kid’s life improve and become like a new person. Kyle needs to work on his “steel man” skills. Every argument made in support of what I consider child abuse and medical malpractice can be flipped and argued against you. Ie; if you let a trans girl mature into an adult they will have to deal with masculine features, same for allowing a potential trans boy to take testosterone or trans girl delay puberty into their 20’s as though that’s not going to screw them up permanently. Jon Stewart has never had a worse argument. There isn’t enough data, and this is being rushed through because of an inorganic social pressure, and pretending as though we have a full long term study for these practices or even close to a real scientific community consensus on this from every aspect. So maybe we proceed with extreme caution when practicing experimental medicine on children at mass. Seriously, I don’t typically care if anyone reads a comment I make, much less if anyone actually responds, but feel free to come @ me if you think any of these arguments in favor of gender affirming pediatric care are compelling, because they’re certainly not.

I just think that there is so much social pressure to present female if you are biologically female and present male if you are biologically male that in the vast vast majority of cases people are who trans know that they are trans. There is so much social stigma and gender expectations that come with your inherent biological sex that saying no I’m committing to full on to becoming the gender that differs from my sex is a momentous endeavor. I think the vast majority of cases of people who transition are transgender. Now will there be the exception for the rule and will there be that person out there who tries transitioning and it ends up not being comfortable and happy with those bodily changes yes, but doesn’t mean we should scrap the whole system that has been developed by doctors who deeply care about the health and safety and well being of their patients.

I think this is a fascinating discussion. My question however is how trustworthy are the experts? This is an honest question. Was it the experts that said opioids were healthy for the general use of pain medications to the point of encouraging their use? Is gender dysphoria appropriately researched to the point of understanding where the line is drawn between authentic cases and confused youth influenced by cultural trends? Are suicide numbers of youth treated and not treated because of these authentic cases of dysphoria or is it due to lack of access to mental health care, the latter of which is followed up necessarily by medical treatment and those that are the victims of suicide are simply not getting the mental health treatment required? What are the long term mental health issues of what Kyle said would be the long term effects of hormone treatment? I don't think this is a black and white issue. It IS possible that the number of youths identifying as trans, which has increased exponentially, is due to social influence. And if that is the case wouldn't it be a good thing to err on the side of caution? And if we err on the side of caution, and provide accessible healthcare to the general population -including mental healthcare (a major problem with most conservatives), and address the question of influence over authenticity, perhaps we can uncover some better solutions.

And I don't want young teens getting hormones, puberty blockers, or top surgery. They can wait til they're adults, and until then they can use a whole host of options to help their gender dysphoria; therapy, packers, binders, dressing in gender affirming clothes, and wearing gender affirming hair. You can start a transition without these crazy irreversible medical interventions. Everyone knows you date someone before you marry them, but think it's fine to let KIDS hop right into irreversible decisions. It's insane. Also, Kyle has not seen how much this HAS BECOME A SOCIAL CONTAGION. Which means we have to put some brakes on it. Like, how much does Kyle really engage with the LGBT community? He's blind on this.

Stewart’s argument is bogus. Just because a person may take the advice of a doctor on one issue does not mean that they should take ALL advice. It’s also a logical fallacy that if the AMA makes a recommendation it is the correct one just because the AMA has made it, it’s an appeal to authority. We have seen the last few years just how free doctors are to go against the grain of popular opinion, not at all. We have seen the past few decades just how the AMA has given terrible dietary advice and contributed to the obesity epidemic. We have seen doctors over prescribing drugs of all kinds for their own gain. We all have to make decisions together. Taking guidelines as just that “guidance” not decree.
