You can have an uninteresting, basic stage set but the minute you have Jonas Kaufmann amongst it, the whole stage suddenly becomes alive. What a magnificent voice that man has got. Anyone who can listen to him in this clip and not be moved by it must be emotionally dead. I think he carried Sonya Yoncheva through a very difficult scene and, on the whole, she sounds beautiful.

this is the first originale version of Don Carlos, the way Verdi wrote it. The Italian version and 4 Act ae later. this is the absolute original.

Thank you, Revopera, for publishing this very important and beautiful passage. JK is perfect. Sonya Yoncheva is very good but on occasion, very very slightly off-pitch (sharp), I think. The French version has a lot of singing by Philip II and the chorus. Most interesting. But Charles V of this production is awfully feeble, undignified.

In addition to being in French, the music is noticeably different than the version normally heard, even when the five act version is used. I assume that this must then be the original version of the score being used? And that Verdi when preparing a later five act version (or the four act version only) not only changed the first act but also this duet.

Seriously... how many versions ARE there? Even the Chatelet version didn't have this ending? Don Carlo is kind of like the "how many versions of the Star Wars OT are there" of the opera world :D

Heureusement qu'il y a la voix toujours aussi belle de JK même si sa partenaire peine un peu. Mais Dieu quelle horreur cette mise en scène (d'ailleurs peut-on parler de mise en scène ?) Déjà que l'Opéra Bastille est une salle froide, alors y rajouter cette scène quasi vide, ces pries Dieu couplés à un divan (pourquoi ?) et, sommet du ridicule, un Charles Quint en miniature ! Mais merci tout de même à Revopera de nous avoir posté cette scène !

Bravo maestro Kaufmann

Avec une distribution pareille, l'opéra Bastille aurait mieux fait de donner l’œuvre en version concert plutôt que de nous imposer une mise en scène minable et incohérente ainsi que des costumes et décors laids à souhaits !!! Quand je pense aux prix des places pour voir des horreurs pareilles !!! Les parisiens ne sont pas difficiles...ou ne connaissent rien à Verdi !!!

Brava questa cantante ma la voce è anonima e non da emozione forse perchè quando si ha nelle orecchie la voce unica e meravigliosa della Caballè in questo ruolo, nessun'altra riesce a competere. Kaufmann sempre bravo ma se non controlla un pò la sua esuberanza vocale avrà presto dei problemi.

Très loin de la version avec Anja Harteros. Yontcheva n'a pas la voix qui convient pour cet opéra, (et d'autres) trop de vibrato qui frise parfois le chevrotement. Heureusement que JK sauve la mise. De plus une MES minimaliste qui détonne ...

Awful setting, unworthy of Verdi's masterpiece, spoils this production. The singing is good but not spectacular. Kaufman's voice sounds as if he had an egg in his mouth, so unnatural. Yoncheva has a beautiful voice. A much better french version of don Carlos is the one with Alagna and Matilla.
