I think one of the reasons for this is that during TNG, some of the actors, including Mr. Frakes, got to direct episodes. I would think that would be great experience for an actor.

I quite like the somewhat softer way Patrick Stewart plays Picard now. It took some getting used to but it's actually cool. I actually wasn't a huge fan of the grumpy, sterner Picard in the first couple seasons, who hated kids and just wanted everybody to be straightlaced.

as a boy that grew up with and on Star Trek TNG, I love it so much how basically the on screen personas (now even more so as it is portrait in the PICARD series) is also the real life relationship between the two... with Patrick being the singular genius, in his craft above so many and Jonathan seems to be the guy that makes everything run in the backround, sort of one of the only ones that can tame him. and basically behind all of it, simply a man-love :)

I wasn't a fan, but I respect that other people have their opinions and tastes. I didn't appreciate the dark and gritty aspects of the newer trek shows. The idea that Capt Picard was motivated to be a consummate professional because of trauma from his mother - I very much disliked that. Why couldn't he have just been a career oriented professional member of the officer class? But we all like different things, so it's all good!

Myself and my brothers watching Star Trek TNG on a satellite dish in the early 90s was pretty special. And it had a very positive effect on this young man, I was then and remain now a huge fan. I started Picard season 1...lasted 4 episodes before I gave up on it. On a number of recommendations though, I've been giving season 3 a go. Two things struck me. The first one being that it's a completely different show and infinity better than what I saw from season 1. The second thing though...we need a Riker spin off once Picard comes to an end. I always liked Frakes in TNG and thought his acting then was just fine, but what a brilliant actor he has matured into since! He's having a lot of fun playing Riker again and it shows.

Jonathan Frakes getting Patrick Stewart to say “I know Johnny; act better?” is like Usain Bolt looking at his coach and saying “I know coach; run faster?” The funny thing is, they can both do it.

I love that Frakes is a top tier actor, as well as a top tier director! Otherwise Sir Patrick would be having none of it. Working with your director, that was your co-star for hundreds of episodes, id fantastic. They love and respect each other, and that they will go to the moon and back, speaks to the mutual respect and talent they possess. Having been costars only requires minor corrections: faster, slower, emphasis on X. As a film maker, I love the idea of working together so long that you have a short hand and you can crank it out so quickly, but so genuinely!

However it is that you feel towards the Picard series in general, the interactions between the TNG characters in general are pretty great, but the scenes with Riker and Picard are absolutely amazing. Even though they're playing characters in a script, the mutual respect and admiration they have for one another easily shines through it all.
