As a serious writer, Jonathan Franzen likes complex sentences. This is not one of them. Nor is this.

I can't remember the last time I saw a novelist on a mainstream talk show that wasn't Charlie Rose. Kudos to the Late Show team.

Baby, Jonathan Franzen isn't some fringe writer; he's very much mainstream - not hard to notice or get ahold of; he's been called 'The Great American Novelist who will write The Great American Novel!' It's not impressive that they got him on a talk show. Unless this is an ironic comment, in which, it's very hard to tell.

I loved the corrections, so I will read more of his books the corrections is very funny even though I saw so many reviews and no one called it funny I laughed a lot while reading it
@Graenelolz6 жыл бұрын
minamoon01 dude, I went through some comments here and this stuck with me. The corrections is a gloriously funny book and it‘s generally considered that way by the readers, although (haah) some „established“ critics won‘t admit that. However, I wholeheartedly agree with you, I fell on the floor laughing because of Chip and Gary and what they went through, it‘s masterful.

I just read Freedom. Was the best book I've read in a long time. Couldn't put it down and plowed through it in a weekend. I'm very much looking forward to reading the Corrections.

It’s funny but dismantling to watch Colbert dance around a guest that even he may think is smarter than him.

In the "old days" people were capable of "long thoughts," not just sound bites or vapid tweets. And in movies today the idea of a scene that goes on for minutes without a car crash or an explosion is considered to be boring or a form of torture for people with short attention spans. That is why the Fassbender movie about Steve Jobs did poorly. Lots of dialogue.

When will Colbert STOP disrespecting his guests? When will he get that it is not he himself who is the guest and subject of the interview? Stephen, grow the f up!

I agree whole-heartedly. I don't have a Twitter account, but I have great difficulty texting succinctly. My friend's and family's texts seem to average 5 words or less, while mine are usually 4 or more times longer. Suffice it to say, I don't text a lot. And it is only with great difficulty that, sometimes, I will leave out punctuation. These formats were not built for people like us.

as someone who likes complex sentences he sure has trouble completing even a normal one
@xxzhang8 жыл бұрын
that's fine, i'm not questioning his intellect. i'm just find it ironic and annoying that he's questioning the value of twitter because he thinks people are unable to communicate "properly" on it while he himself is having trouble even communicating that opinion.
@xxzhang8 жыл бұрын
then perhaps the virtue of twitter is analogous. if his inability is a symbol of his genius, then why can't the same be said of twitter?
@xxzhang8 жыл бұрын
the point of the reduced characters is to induce speed, thereby increasing the human cognition that you claim is lacking. if it wasn't like that, it would just be any other social media platform like blogs or even news media. the point of twitter is to try to be as immediate as speech. therefore, i still think franzen's critique is ill informed and hypocritical. the anti-twitter bandwagon is as stupid as the twitter bandwagon.
@laydijae8 жыл бұрын
+xingalingaful I agree with you totally. If being a fan of complex sentences means you can't like twitter (because you can't quote Shakespeare in 140 characters...) then shouldn't that mean that of foremost importance to you is communication by way of complex thought and so being, when given the opportunity to communicate you'd only do so in that way. If that's not what it means then is it more-so an indication of snobbish hypocrisy?
@xxzhang8 жыл бұрын
***** we were on the topic only because his speech is dependent on the definition of twitter but okay... i hope you enjoy basking in more intellectual topics
