Dont try to pretend to your kids that the world will kneel before them and opportunities are endless. Set realistic expectations for the world. Tell them that they have to work to earn something and that the world is not as PC and straight forward as someone might tell them. The world is not simple, its harsh, its diverse, its complicated. But always encourage them to figure their own way out. Thats how you build realistic expactations and confidence.

I had a conversation with my 9 year old about 20 minutes ago about other kids being mean and not liking her. Nearly everywhere we go, a kid (almost always a different kid) that she goes to school with will see her, and go out their way to say hi to her. I told her that she's popular, and she argued with me, and said all the other kids hate her. I told her if that was true, then those kids wouldn't be so eager for her attention outside of school. I think sometimes children will get a negative idea in their head, and will develop a certain level of confirmation bias when it comes to that negativity.

My parents let me Do whatever I wanted but early on they said if I drank and drove, got someone pregnant or got addicted to hard drugs I was out of the house. Shitload of freedom and pretty easy rules to follow, and I think not being sheltered helped me in the long run. Being sheltered is just as harmful to kids as anything in my opinion .

I grew up in the 70's. We we're RELENTLESS to each other. Sad to see how parents are today when you know instinctively what this guy is saying.

When my daughter was about two months she developed a fever. Being a first time mother, of course I took her to the pediatrician (he also happened to be my pediatrician when I was little). He told me not to give her Tylenol because her body was trying to fight something off and I needed to give her a chance to do it. He also told me not to run after her wiping her nose in her hands whenever she got dirty, but a little dirt wasn’t going to hurt and that it could even strengthen the immune system. Made sense to me, so I decided right then and there that I was not going to be a helicopter mom, and I have two great, well-adjusted kids, 25 and 24 years, who have never had anything more than sniffles, and TRUST me when I say they were into EVERYthing when they were kids.

I 100% agree with this. I am a former teacher and the way the school system coddles kids is crippling them in every way.

Schools that "ban bullying" punish someone for sticking up for themself. At my high school and my former middle school, if someone hits you (and whether you defend yourself or not) both people involved get suspended. So they have punished standing up for yourself and the only way to handle conflict is to go to the guidance counselor. Even then they probably won't do anything and just tell you to ignore them

When I was young my parents were super protective. Every time I got a sniffle the doc told them to pump me full of antibiotics and of course they did because good parents listen to their doctors. Well when I turned 10 I was diagnosed with a late onset severe peanut allergy. On top of my countless allergies to polling and cats and all that. Now I've undergone the Oral Immuno Therapy treatment and I have toeat peanuts every day to keep my tolerance up. Moral of the story: don't coddle your kids or they have to eat peanuts every day of their life so they don't have to live in fear

Taking away someone's stress doesn't help them because stress is inevitable. Teaching someone to deal with stress is helpful. Life is full of challenges, so we have to challenge our kids and reward them for pushing through those challenges.

Many many parents today are weak parents, not saying that they are bad parents, some are very good parents in being providers, care-givers, fun, trips, presents etc.., BUT, in teaching kids how to be strong, confident, enforcing discipline, being the bad-guy when necessary, teaching self-reliance, teaching life skills, offering guidance, teaching how to overcome challenges, etc.. many parents are failing. Many parents are teaching their kids (whether consciously or sub-consciously) weakness. Tough pill to swallow but its true.

If I ever have the chance to be a father, I'll do everything in my power to empower and support my kids but I'll also try to teach them that life doesn't always go the way you want it to. There will be people who are assholes, there will be rejections, and there will be days when you just don't want to do it anymore. But the key to living a good life is moving forward despite the disappointments we may face, not letting our fears drain us and keep us from pursuing the things we want.

When I was in high school and you did something embarrassing you just switched school or prayed it only got spread around to a small group of people. Social media insures that all of your embarrassing and social escapades remain immortal. No wonder juvenile depression is skyrocketing today's culture expects perfection and ostracizes those whom fall short...

I remember being bullied as a kid by a couple of guys in my class. Only a half a dozen people seen it and knew about it. Today you get bullied online and the whole school knows about it the next day. No wonder these kids are depressed all the time.

My buddy is a bubble wrap parent. He had three kids. The oldest girls is a SJW that graduated college with a degree in gender studies. She is my godchild. Gave her $500.00 for graduating high school and $250.00 for graduating college. She has spoken less than 50 words to me over the last ten years (she gets nothing now). His other son and daughter have both flunked out of college in less than a year. His gf told me that his daughter had a crying fit because she could not fill out an application (could not read and understand it). My friend sat down and filled it out for her. Glad I am not him and that I have no kids.

We need more strong men and women teaching in the classroom who understand this principle and less of these weak lefty women and men who are full of good intentions and bad ideas.

Honestly I was raised in a sheltered household throughout my childhood years because my parents were too poor to let me experience more in life, (ex; summer camps, driving, not many friends ) made me realize that lifestyle gave me a lot more anxiety and depression and made it more difficult for me to try and control my emotions but as I became more self aware of it all, it really helped. If only things weren’t so expensive for everything so I can experience more and be exposed more then I wouldn’t be having so much anxiety problems...

This is why sending your kids to martial arts school is extremely important. Because three times a week your children will be challenged and different ways. And these challenges will prepare them for any kind of social interaction including of course attacks on their physical. This guy is right on the money, we all need challenges in life to see what we're made of and when we fall from those challenges, it gives us a chance to do things better the second round if we're lucky enough to get a second chance. I just packed both my grade school age kids peanut butter sandwiches for lunch, no issue at all, and they attend public school in New York. On the other hand, my older son asked for a piece of cake for breakfast, then called me a bully when I said no.

You don't want your kid to be bullyed? Take him to some martial arts classes. Not because you want him to fight the bully, just for the confidence needed to stand up for himself, and the bully will back down in most of the cases.

This reminds me of one time in elementary school i was playing soccer with kids my age, and one much younger kid joined us. I think i might of taken the ball away from him once in a fine soccer move, and then a teacher pulled me out of class later that day to told me what I did was wrong. When the teacher was telling me this, I was extremely confused because it wasn't like i was overly mean to the kid, or picked on them specifically, just a case of being way too protective.

Joe, We just had the same situation last month. Flying back from Charleston it was announced that due to a passenger with a nut allergy there would be no peanuts served and we were asked to not consume nut containing snacks on the flight. We happened to have a can of peanuts with us. I was quite surprised that the concern of one suppressed that of 87 others.

It was raining that day and I overheard a little girl asking his dad for an umbrella getting out of the car, the dad said “I gave you a jacket already”.

I grew up with fragile parents and that has in turn made me fragile in some ways. I'm 25 now and the last couple of years I've really have been trying to improve myself. I've started sticking up for myself, I've started to advocate for myself, I've started to be more assertive, and I haven't been shying away from confrontation. It's been a real eye-opener how little opposition I've faced because of how rare genuine self-confidence is. It's nice to have that advantage, however, I have never felt more alienated in my life. People are afraid to interact with me in any way that might cause conflict, so they usually avoid me or just default to agreeing with me. For the first time in my life, I actually crave a fight.

Same with peanut allergies as with Lactose intolerance. I am from Bulgaria and we have a long tradition of consuming deary products, mainly yogurt and white cheese. I know of NO ONE that is Lactose intolerant, but i constantly hear of people complaining about it in the western countries.

I get his point but I beg to differ. If you observe kids long enough you'll realize that very often they are brutal with each other and sometimes down right evil. Parents and caregivers have a very good reason for freaking out about bullying.

This is interesting I told my coworkers that my Mom as a Teen would allow me to get a daily bus pass and go around town by myself. They were shocked! I saw it as an adventure.

So what about the pregnant moms who ate peanut butter and a huge variety of foods, and also gave it to their child.... but the child developed a peanut allergy anyway? 🤷‍♀️ Coming from someone who deals w their child having nuts allergies, I have my own suspicions... #1 his allergy reaction to peanut butter started immediately following his MMR vaccine (no, I’m not antivax, but it shouldn’t be off the table that something went wrong there since both have to do with immunity). #2 doc told me to take Zantac twice a day while pregnant for the worst indigestion/reflux I ever felt, and I never had those problems before or after pregnancy - only during. Makes me think something was a already wrong with the gut (me or my child’s) and possible the Zantac and MMR could have been what made the cup spill over, so to speak. Immune system might not have been able to handle that vaccine or so many at once, and the Zantac probably made my gut worse... because it actually didn’t help at all when taking it, but the doc insisted that that was all I could do. I also didnt start having the indigestion or reflux until after they gave me a flu shot while pregnant. I never get that shot, but I did when pregnant because the medical ppl were bullies when it came to that... and it really wasnt a big thing like it seems to be today w all the propaganda pushing to get flu shots every year. I think there is something to be said about how the pregnant mom feels when she is pregnant, esp when it comes to digestion. The problems were prob already there.. my child probably couldnt handle foods that I was eating for reasons I dont know. And the prenatal vitamins I had to take before bed were terrible.. made me sick to my stomach, which is why I took them before bed. For reference.. this was all back in 2005.

I disagree with Jonathan about the playground monitor. I always hade one throughout primary and high school in australia (k-12). You are not 100% protected from being bullied or whatever due to the enormous number of kids and there are usually 1 or 2 adults on patrol, they cant be everywhere at once and its a good thing they cant be. So there is an element there where you are exposed so danger but its always a good thing to know that if you fall off something and get seriously hurt or someone wants to cave your head in you have somewhere to run to to seek help quickly.

I'm a vet so, I walk that fine balance of being kind but, I know the world ain't a kind place so I try to develop confidence in real areas in their lives like building things with their hands, don't start a fight and if ya have to fight you win at all cost and protect those being bullied. I want strong independent kind kids that go out of their way for others and to lead, but, it's on them in the end to use what I teach them. Love your children but, they are stronger than they look and can bloody well clean their rooms themselves.

I was bullied from primary till the end of middleschool without threat of violence (except the last 3 years there was a threat) as a boy and it fucked me up! I've been able to recover from the trauma for the most part but i'm still working on it as a 20 year old

Bullying is done for unreasonable things. Bullying doesn’t equal conflict. They can still experience conflict in this world and it will shape them in good or bad ways. But bullying shouldn’t be tolerated at all!! Bullying is a direct result from adults children are surrounded by. Not parents but any adult they learn that trait from. We shouldn’t allow that. Respect and Toughness is a learned behavior. Just like bullying we should always strive for respect. To get it and to give it.

Exposure therapy. I get pretty bad social anxiety and it has screwed with my life. The way to get better is to expose myself to uncomfortable situations while dropping safety behaviours until I get bored with the exercise. Then I move on to the next thing I am afraid of. Progressive desensitisation. I am a whole lot better than I used to be, but this shit carries a fuck ton of baggage with it and it's a real pain in the arse to sift through it all.

One thing here really resonated with me. Talking about peanuts, and Joe relates a story about being on a flight and someone was allergic blah, blah.....anyway, planes always serve nuts, and here we have one person controlling the actions of the whole rest of the plane. So anytime this person flies , the whole rest of the plane has to be respectful of their allergy. Fuck that! Take the train, drive, bike, walk or stay home, but no way should the whole plane be subject to the restrictions of one. Period!

I got invited to a national youth leadership forum one summer and they said if we had any from of peanuts we had to throw them out because they could have a reaction through it being airborne after you ate it. I had those small cups of jif peanut butter, peanut butter chocolate chip granola bars, and peanut butter crackers. My roommates had a jar of peanut butter and peanut m&ms and I asked before I knew they had these if they were the ones and they said no and I was like I'm not throwing my shit out and we all ate peanut butter every fucking night. If you are so allergic to peanuts that you can have allergic from someone breathing then why should I waste money on snacks and change my habits and diet just because you decided to come? Why not stay the fuck home.
