I often get the question on how we shoot our videos. Well this "Behind The Scenes” video gives you a glimpse in a day of preparation into shooting not one but two live acoustic videos on the same day.
We found an old abandoned military base in the outskirts of Montreal late last year. The building is somewhat isolated and has been left to deteriorate on the top of a mountain since 1986. It has no electricity, running water, doors, or windows; only its concrete skeleton remains. We knew that time and weather would be our two biggest challenges, as our fingers and voices would take a beating from the icy winds and air that chilled the rooms of the base. At the break of dawn our team started preparing the generators, sound equipment, and heaters but most importantly the lighting which was key for a place like this.
Our acoustic videos are done in one sequence with one camera. Everything you're seeing and hearing is live off the floor. On the average we’ll play and record the song 5 to 10 times depending on the magic that’s happening between musicians and everyone behind the camera. Nothing is ever perfect but imperfections make the performances authentic and real.
“Next To Me” was done early in the morning in the basement of the skeletal structure. Natural light was leaking through the openings creating a beautiful environment. “To Be Real” was done one floor above in what we called the giant hangar later in the afternoon. As the temperature dropped, so did the natural light creating a race against time in an environment that would be pitch black in a matter of an hour or so.
