A powerful tornado tore through western Kentucky communities Memorial Day, impacting areas previously devastated by the historic and deadly tornado of December 2021. In this video, we share harrowing accounts from survivors who credit the lessons learned from the earlier disaster for saving their lives during this latest onslaught.
‪@WxChasing‬ and I tracked the tornado as it formed on May 26, 2024, at dusk, and followed it as it his a small community near Dawson Springs, Kentucky. You'll see the first moments of survivors as we assist them escape the rubble of their home, and the frustration as I try to get them a safe place to wait out of the rain.
As recovery begins again, we uncover stories of narrow escapes and heartbreaking losses from near Dawson Springs and Barnsley, Kentucky.

I’m sure there are many people in that town that need help. I’m sure there are several injuries! Please don’t judge law enforcement so harshly until you know the whole story!💕 That reporter should not have ask that officer when so much was going on!!

One could ALSO say that this reporter could have put his camera down and put this couple he was SO concerned about in HIS OWN car, and driven them somewhere "safe". They were UNinjured and were not a priority to emergency services. Police and Fire have an unbelieveable amount of things to take care of moments after a tornado.... things like finding out what roads are accessable, where the greatest damage is and possible injured that need to be evacuated there, live power lines down, people entrapped in basements or cars, gas leaks, etc. These folks were mobile and uninjured, and NOT a priority.

I understand giving the benefit of the doubt, but this just happened to me a couple of weeks ago in Barnsdall, Oklahoma. It is very frustrating that we don’t have solution based people in these positions. They just want to find a way to say no.

Not really. There could be hundreds of people without homes. They are responding and assessing the situation. If they elected to pick up 2 people for a ride, while 2 other people would be seriously injured or potentially dying…people would be criticizing the cop and firefighters for not helping the people in more serious need.

What makes it better is that is the lovely chief Mike Opalek of Dawson Springs PD. Really shows the amount of compassion they have for their people. One of the many many reasons I moved to STL after being seriously injured and nearly dying in 2021 and everyone letting me lay there for 5 hours bleeding and fading in and out of consciousness because nobody "wanted to get blood in their car" 🙄 If it weren't for the nurses who showed up to the school and my dads friend Tommy for driving me there from the PD, I wouldn't have made it that night.

That is definitely not their job during a mass casualty incident like this. These two would be one of the lowest priorities. They are not in shock-this term is so misunderstood and misused. They also have a storm shelter in which they can seek shelter from the elements. Most people had no electricity after the storm for days, so a roof over your head is about as good as anyone had. Thank you for this video. I am here in Ohio county KY and we were scared last night because that tornado was headed for us. If it hadn’t been for that squall line from Indiana moving south and dissipating that super cell, we would have been hit too. We have nowhere to really shelter here but have done nothing about it either. For years we have always “lucked out” by storms going north or south of us. I think it’s about time we gave up on luck and got a storm shelter. What gave us all the time and warning we needed to be safe was the coverage of the storms by “Ryan Hall Y’all” on KZfaq. Next time storms come, please watch him. He and his team save lives by warning us far in advance of what is on its way. Jonathan, thank you for your care and concern for us all.

Heartbreaking. Sending prayers. When you asked her if about the gas leak, she said “yal” she had that cigarette ready to light, you had to be thinking to yourself… 🙏 please don’t light it, please don’t light it. That was my first thought when I saw the cigarette. Bless her heart she was a nervous wreck, I know she was holding on to her fur baby.

This couple’s survival story has motivated my family to invest into a storm pod. We didn’t even know these things were available within our budget. So many times while hunkering in our little cellar, my instincts were screaming “This isn’t safe enough”. We’ve looked at various options over the past few days. Looks like a stand alone “Storm Shed” is our best option. Thank you for everything you do and for getting this story to so many of us. ❤

That is awesome to hear! We all need to take personal lessons away from these events and prepare, just like this couple did with their homemade shelter. It’s why I focus on people stories so much in these storms and the aftermath.

2021 tornado messed a lot of ppl n I'm sure they didn't know Abt survivors or how bad it really was this time. Our cops r good here they're patriots. First priority is to find survivors. Someone would of got those ppl, there's too many of us here not to . Least they didn't hault lookn for survivors so Andy brashears could do a photo op with commie in office like Dec of 2021. That made everyone especially the cops upset . We back the blue here they're our neighbors family n friends . Plz keep negative comments to yourself you wasn't here in it you dnt know how u would react until in one.

I thought I was jaded, but I still have room to be stunned that a taxpayer subsidized employee in a warm car & dry uniform facing 2 drenched survivors in shock can turn his warm backside away. He could have just driven them around in his warm, dry car. Wonder what he does at Christmas with that 'no room at the inn' part? As. a city bus driver, was in a widespread fire once, loaded up my bus along the neighborhood where I was stranded, & we just drove in circles picking up more people until an emergency shelter opened at a school. That's nothing heroic, it's common sense & being human--passengers helped me stay calm, and in a strange way? We had a real nice time. People shared snacks, water, stories. I almost feel sorry for that patrol officer. He's disconnected from his heart, common sense, & compass. Dang.

This reminds me of another incident in Kentucky when the hospitals were kicking elderly patients out and dumping them in the middle of the street. The cop who refused to help this old couple had no compassion either. Their judgment will be harsh. Those who have no mercy will receive no mercy. James 2:13 For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.

Having lived on the Gulf Coast over 20 years, I've been through several hurricanes. I learned that getting out there as soon as it's safe and start cleaning up brings on a spirit of survival and empowerment! It brings out a sense of community and bonding like nothing else.
