A little detail about the song #Hashtag... The Korean title is 와플 (wa-peul, "waffle"). It's a brilliant title because the # symbol looks like the grid of a waffle AND it sounds similar to the word 악플 (ak-peul) which means "malicious comments". Also! this just in: Rewind has just been banned by KBS for Japanese lyrics. The part is いち に さん もう一回だけ from when he counts 1,2,3 in several languages. Edit: KBS has banned songs for having Japanese lyrics many(?) times before.

Waffle is such a brilliant and sassy song I chocked when I read the lyrics the first time and then I couldn't stop laughing and crying because Jonghyun did THAT, he fucking called out all these toxic people with that song and I just.... wow....

Another little easter egg he put in the album. The title track is "빛이 나 (Shinin')". 빛 (bit) meaning "light" = blingbling. 이 (ee) = is. 나 (na) meaning "me/I". Since his debut, his known epithet is "Blingbling is Jonghyun!" So his title track 빛이 나 = Blingbling is me/Jonghyun.

After reading the lyrics to "Before the Spring", I connected the song to Jonghyun's Seasonal Affective Disorder that he was diagnosed with. Seasonal Affective Disorder is when someone who has normal mental health most of the year show/have more depressive symptoms during one specific time of the year only. For many people, including Jonghyun, they are more depressed during the winter. So to me, this song is Jonghyun expressing himself before the spring, waiting for that depressing winter to end. Hence the lyrics "The cold winter is the same every year" and also "The spring is coming sooner than before" which.. well.. yea.. Also that line in "Before the Spring" where he says "Don't worry about what to do, Im fine, and spring will come to me"..... its like he is saying it to us and to the members personally that he is alright now and that spring will come to him. Jonghyun will always be my favourite singer/songwriter. He is and will always be a musical genius. It's shame to see people recognize his talent and love for music only after he is gone.

Trinity Wong pretty much all Scandinavians experience SAD since we only get few hours of sun in the winter, and the few hours the sun is up we are in school or at work + it's cloudy af so we don't see the sun for over a month. We call it winter depression.

Indeed i do think the season had a stronger effect on him during the winter months, but from whats been made public Jonghyun struggled with pretty severe depression his entire life, not just through certain seasons. I think this alongs with being affected by the cold winter months made life seem pretty unbearable for him... I can only hope he's found peace.

Also living in korea, the work environment can take a very serious toll on a persons mental health. From what ive learned, he didnt have a chance to make a life outside of his work, so for someone also battling with mental illness and having to struggle with this, along with S.Korea's stigma's around mental health and therapy, idk... It just hurts to think about how much he must have struggled...

Few facts All lyrics are written by Jonghyun himself *except "Take the Dive" and "Just for a day"* All songs are co-composed by Jonghyun *except "Only one you need" "Take the Dive" and "Just for a day"* 12:49 In "Take the dive" the background vocal is from both Jonghyun and the original writer of the song

The lyric video you used for Before Our Spring didn’t have good translations. The ending lyrics should’ve been something like: “I’m afraid of appearing in front of you maybe because you might start feeling the same way I feel. So forget my tears and my sorrow, Spring will come to me too, then... then... then... then...” There are a lot of different lyric videos and some are better than others. I like to watch a lot of them for just one song to get a better understanding of the lyrics since it can be translated in many different ways. Thank you for enjoying his album. Thank you for loving Jonghyun. And please continue to do so. He’s still with us and always will be. Also, please continue to love SHINee.

My favourite ones, musically, are "Take the dive" and "Just for a day.". Even as they lyrically can be read to be incredibly dark, I want to believe that there's also a light to it, that he had hope, even if not for himself. I wish he'd had the chance to keep growing as a musician, because he often said he was only getting started. Man, this video made me emotional at a couple points, but especially at the end, when "Before our spring" was playing. The album is full of beautiful songs, so I hope I can listen to it with joy for his artistry and not just with sorrow that comes from losing him. This world isn't made for us, but we still try to brave it. Jonghyun was, and still is, my ultimate bias. The kindness he showed the world despite the cruelty, his depression and his insomnia were all things I could relate to and so, when he spoke out about it, it made me feel less alone. He showed the world an innocence that contrasted all the darkness he was met with and to me, that was the sign of a beautiful human being. I think he was someone with a lot of empathy, just like I am, and even as much as we're hurt, we can never hurt back, only love and hope it heals the ones who are hurting, whether they're hurting others as a result or not. He cared so much, and now he's gone.

Thank you guys for reviewing it honestly!! Although I don't think you can relate every song to what happened with him. Jonghyun is known to dig out his old songs and demos, even 'Before Our Spring' was written back in 2015. It's actually funny that some of the more musically simple songs ('Only One You Need', 'Take the Dive' and 'Just for a Day') are the ones where he isn't credited in the composition (and they sound least like his composing style hahaha)!! It's funny what Kevin said about 'End of a Day' being very typical musically.... I think it's true but his heart and execution always comes through especially with the lyrics. He actually said once that ballads are the easiest songs to write (when referring to Lee Hi's 'Breathe' which he wrote). I remember thinking 'ahh of course he would say that' because he's really so musical and he knows what's musically simple, as well as the fact that he was always so open with his emotions too hahaha ~~

I disagree with your comment about not every song relating to his emotional state..Yes, some of his work was created years ago, but that doesn't mean he wasn't depressed then either. Though in my opinion, his music was born out of his emotions, even if they weren't, that doesn't mean they weren't arranged to express his state of being. I interpreted even the songs that SOUND like his compositions, but aren't, to represent the contrast between Jonghyun's promoted music/albums v. his personal music/albums+book. In an interview during his "She is" album, he has said he wrote and performed his promotional stuff as if he was "fulfilling a character." I think he was tired of doing/being that, and so simply stopped during what he planned to be his last album. He didn't want to pretend anymore. When this album was first released, I listened to it on shuffle and caught obvious things like the meaning behind Hashtag (Waffle) (I'm Korean and the lyrics make it really obvious), but seeing this analysis made me re-listen in order and see the progression represented in the tracks list. Haunting to the bone.
@roseroyaltyy
@roseroyaltyy 6 жыл бұрын
mzcharmingz I do agree that yes, often his music is about his emotional state. But it really doesn’t help people to analyse how each song relates to the fact that he ended his own life. We don’t know when he started s****** ideation and I don’t think it’s fair to assume the whole album is about that. Yes there are some of these songs that I find hard to listen to having read the translations but some of them are also relatable and you can tell he wanted to make good music as usual (Sightseeing). He has often been very open with his emotions but that doesn’t mean all his music was about his depression. Even his more personal albums (Story Op 1+2) are not all about his depression.
@roseroyaltyy
@roseroyaltyy 6 жыл бұрын
mzcharmingz however, I do see that he may have arranged the order of the tracks with this in mind. ‘Sentimental’ and ‘Before Our Spring’ coming at the end hits super hard. I just don’t think it’s right to make this the album that’s about his s******. It’s more than that. It shows a lot of who his was as a person and artist beyond simply his depression. It also just feels a little insulting every time people who never really cared about him that much try to analyse him and look for clues about him after he’s gone, but that’s just how I personally feel.

@@roseroyaltyy As someone who knew about him plenty of years before he took his own life and I would say the music he made himself 100% show how he was feeling during all the parts of his life, he had a very troubled life ever since he was a kid and had suffered with depression for a really long time too without the help he really needed so it makes sense a lot of his songs would be kind of sad and dark, he also went through a lot of hate from the people in Korea for some of the stuff he did so I'm sure not very nice comments were thrown against him on a regular, he was a sensitive soul very in tune with his emotions and I wouldn't say there is anything wrong thinking such a personal album would have a relation to how he was feeling at that particular time and what he was going through, also there is nothing wrong with finding an artist after he dies, that's how you know someone really made an impact on the world and I would say almost everyone knows him as the amazing artist he was and not just the person that took his own life. P.S. - Also since people can't really get to know him now they sort of have only his legacy to try and figure out what sort of person he was, humans like to try and relate to others so it makes sense they would try to see meaning in his works.

I like your rection Umu you are very lovely and I think Kevin is such a nice person. Honestly as a Shawol I don't like when pple talk about or react to Jonghyun(after his passing) because they usually use him but you respected him and his last gift to us. So thank you again. I don't know Jonghyun was a beautiful soul and that's why his music is so genuine. I won't talk longer my words won't be enough to explain what a wonderful singer, songwriter or a humanbeing he was anyway.

You guys have already been so kind, thoughtful, and considerate when it comes to reacting to Jonghyun and addressing Shawols, so thank you so much. But if I were to have one more request as a Shawol, it would be to not let Jonghyun's death define him. One thing a lot of Shawols have been asking of everyone is to try not to overanalyze the lyrics or search for deeper meanings that aren't there for this album or any of his other songs. Of course, it's very hard to do just considering how tragic everything is and has been. But doing so will only allow his depression to be what's remembered of him. He was and is much more than his depression and his suicide. Jonghyun has tons and tons of demos; his phone was loaded with them and he had even more on his computers. Many of his songs were written years before his albums were published (eg. Suit Up was one of the very first songs he wrote but didn't release until 2016 w/ She Is. Before Our Spring was also written a couple years back), so not everything that he did will relate to the events that happened in December. I'm not sure if you already recorded a reaction to Shinin' with the rest of the crew, but I would request that you guys keep in mind not to over analyze anything in the mv or lyrics. To be honest, some of the stuff Kevin said actually made me pretty uncomfortable even though I know he intended no harm or malice in any way. Sure, Jonghyun wrote songs when he was sad, but he also wrote plenty of songs when he was happy (or horny lol listen to Moon). Heck, he even wrote a song about cockroaches mating. The majority of his lyrics are very straightforward and if it were a song that he wanted to focus on his mental instability, he would have made it obvious (eg. Fireplace and Let Me Out). Having said that, once again, thank you guys for all that you do and thank you for listening to Jonghyun. 💞

Everything is so well thought, diversified, wow, I don't even know good words to describe it. I love this reaction! Your channel is so great. Jonghyun's music is so many things. I call it a many splendored thing. His music is everything all together in one package. You're forever surprised...and then you go of course THIS makes total sense. The journey Jonghyun takes us on is always so....mind-blowing. And this reaction fits the journey he took us on. Thank you for this! Your react made me smile and laugh and cry and smile again.

I always love your reactions, because your revieuws are so accurate. With other channels it's mostly: Oh, this is a good song, I like it. They think of the songs as feelgood songs, when the songs actually talk about serious matters. Some people don't look at the lyrics and I think the lyrics are really important for this album. Because it makes you look at the song in a different way. Thanks for the video!💕

'Just for a day' was instantly my favourite when I first listened to the album. For some reason it makes me think of the Backstreet Boys. I have no idea why. I don't really know the Backstreet Boys well. Can anyone think of a reason why this song reminds me of them?

When you talked about the musical connection between the last 2 songs, I realised that it's a continuation in thoughts and lyrics too in a way. "I'm watching you from afar" sort of theme. In the first one, it's like when he's starting to feel distant and the second one he's afraid to reach out because they are happy and he doesn't want to burden them. Plus their happiness makes him feel at peace too so he decides that he will deal with this himself and reach out when he's feeling a little better.

I actually didn't like the lyric video for When Spring Comes, because there are a lot of missing translations. The lyrics at 30:17-30:24 actually say "I'll forget my sorrow and tears, and if spring ends, at that time.. then... then" (roughly translated)

Umu thank you for doing this video! It means a lot to me. This video helps me to understand more about this album and feel more from it. And I think this is important because Jonghyun must have hidden something in his music, but I can't find them on my own. Thanks to you, I can know more about his art and how creative he is! Thank you for uploading this video, it heals me a lot.

i can imagine rewind being a final lip sync in ru pauls drag race LMAO!!! but this album is truly so beautiful and just...iconic. love every song (especially rewind, hashtag and sentimental)! this album is like a mix of his other albums, but with that fresh twist that jjong always adds! his vocals, chords and just stunning. kevin's words on just for a day got me though. jjong - thank you for blessing us as you always do!! keep shining, our bling bling dino jonghyun 💖

Not sure why I just thought of this, but I wonder if the bell sound in Hashtag is supposed to be reminiscent of a message notification that someone would get online. From a website like Twitter or like the super old MSN messenger.

I've finally got the courage to listen to the album today after 2 months. I just couldn't go beyond Shinin'. But I went through it today. I was quiet the entire time and it really hit me that it's the last thing he's left as an artist to the world. The album is spectacular. 10/10 for me. Also, today is 100 days from his passing. My heart stills hurts every day.

I feel like after listening to these two break down the songs one by one I'm even more convinced that Jonghyun was meant to become a Korean Jazz/pop artist. I say this because almost every commentary on his songs included a notion that some of the samples were random or purposefully out of sync with the rest of the song or imporvised, which made it more interesting to listen to. That is how I would describe Jazz. the different elements by them selves sound nice but make no sense or sound too random if they aren't put together. With the exception of his title tracks I think Jonghyun was always moving toward a kind of obscure genre that combined all the elements of his musical career and isn't that what Jazz is? Combining elements and playing the spaces rather than letting them pass by.

If you still haven't heard his Op. albums at this point, I'll just say based on this reaction you're going to love them, and you're going to have a lot of feels 💙 Though personally, I think my overall fav song of his is Love Belt from his first album (closely followed by Beautiful Tonight of the same album)

And yay, I'm crying. By the way in "before Our Spring" in the end when he says he is afraid he will move it to to other then he says when i forget my sadness and my tears but they didn't translate it, I knew it when I first heard it because I know the words for tears and sadness. Here is that part: I don’t want to go to you I’m afraid I’m contagious When I forget my tears and my sadness When spring comes to me too Then, then, then Then Check out the site colordodedlyrics, they super checked the lyrics

Thank you so much for helping us understand more fully Jonghyun's message in his music. I know nothing about music, but your reviews always help me understand the artist's work a bit more. And thank you Kevin, because ever since I heard "Just for a day", there was something I was somehow familiar with, but I just couldn't wrap my head around it. The second Kevin said that it kind of reminded him of "Don't fear the reaper" by Blue Oyster Cult it hit me. That was what I was so desperate to find out but I just could figure it out myself. I believe that Jonghyun genuinely cared about the people who loved him, and he genuinely believed that the world could become a better and brighter place, that's why he cared to gift us with his music. Thank you once again for the review, I am a huge fan of all the reactors and thank you Umu for creating Classical Musicians React.💜

I am just crying lol Thank you guys for reviewing, and being able to understand his song from a musician or more professionals' point of view really pointed out so many other things that as a non musician can hear. Like that reaper song you mention and the connection of the last 2 song. Thanks again (;´༎ຶД༎ຶ`)❤️

Hugs to Umu. This was such a hard video to finish honestly. Before Our Spring gets me every time but it somehow made things easier to accept too. I don't know if I can express it with my words, but I will try. What happened was devastating, the context behind it even more so... but at the same time when I heard Before Our Spring it made me feel like he was at peace with his decision, and he wanted to give us something to help us accept it too. At the end of the day, he was the master of his fate, (even though we can try to say that his depression made it so he was not thinking properly). It felt as if he was saying he couldn't control his depression the way people hoped and expected, thus making him despair that he did not have a sense of agency... but at the end he liberated himself from this repeating cycle and made his own decision about his life.
