This video will teach you the theoretical basis for correcting your gh5 & gh5s footage. Colour correction is important because it's the base for colour grading, and without it, you can't get the quality of films.
I have created a Colour correction KIT for the GH5 & 5s cameras and a free mini-course on colour correction and grading. You can join the course and download the free LUTs here:

This will be fun to try out for some video nerding out. But for my comedy vlog I need to do as little in post as I can and I’m super happy shooting with Natural and white balancing against a Kodak 57, 18% grey card. So my question will a pre-white balance reduce my dynamic range?

Huge WB shifts may increase the noise in blue channel. And probably reduce DR of blue channel. It's depends of internal camera processing.

The kit is done only for gh5, but if I would remake the LUT for some other camera the same process could be done for other cameras as well. But I would not use Vlog as my base. :-D Maybe c-log for canon. Canan has good colours allready, so the benefit would not be so noticeable. On sony, this would be a lifesaver. So I'll do this for sony next. :-D Canon. Hmm I don't know if canon even needs this.

Yes, the conversion doesn't give you any new data. It wild just spread the captured data to vlog space. Where it's much easier to work with. Try the free coure and you get the idea on how to the process works.

Hey, really really nice and interesting! My question to you, because it really looks like you know what you're doing is, I am editing on macbook 2016 in premiere and because of the new p3 wide gamut display the saturation in premiere looks wrong (its too much) because premiere has no color management and it just thinks my display is standard srgb so the saturation is wrong (hope you understand what my problem is) and I am now just trying to adjust that by using a Lut or an adjustment layer thats taking out saturation to compensate for that but its never really accurate. Do you have any tips on how to do that in a better way? It would be SO helpful! And please make this Kit also for the a7s2 ;)

I use a Sony A6300 for my video work (can't afford a GH5 at the moment) and use the 'Color Space Transform' setting in resolve Studio to go from S-Log2 to REC 709. I'd be interested in knowing how you would rate that method? Thanks.
@JooWorks
@JooWorks 6 жыл бұрын
I assume that it's rather good, similar to the video colour mode in the KIT. resolve should have their math right. But maybe not. :-/ Dunno, need to test. The film colour mode in the KIT is bit different, it gives you a calibrated image with a slight stylised image to give you better skin tones and blues. In most of the cases the film colours are better, sometime much better, but you can get there from the video colour mode with some tweaking, so you should be able to get from the resolves Color management default to the same... maybe. Need to test.

Ok, so I’m not an expert or anything, but v-log is a logarithmic profile while other profiles are linear. This means that v-log will be much more capable to keep details in too bright/too dark areas. It is a way to increase the dynamic range. Switching a normal profile to a log profile will only deteriorate the quality further. You will never get quality back that didn’t exist in the first place.
@JooWorks
@JooWorks 6 жыл бұрын
Correct, except turning std to vlog and then back to rec709 doesn't deteriorate the quality as long as you software's working bit depth is 16 or more. (the footage's bit depth doesn't matter) Premiere Pro, fcpx and resolve work in 16 or more bits. But you are correct, the luts will not give you more data, it will just remap everything to vlog. Kind of redistribute the data to a new coordinates. Not magic, but makse it easier to work with.

@Joonas Tähtinen At 7:51 in your video you say to shoot in HLG instead of vLog because HLG offers greater Luminance range. But if you will be exporting to Rec.709 (e.g., most KZfaq videos), how does shooting in HLG improve footage over vLog?
@JooWorks
@JooWorks 6 жыл бұрын
When I did this video I was impressed of the image quality of HLG and in theory, it does give you better image data, and that seems to be so in tests as well. So you should get a better image with the HLG and that improvement will carry through to youtube as well, but maybe not that much that it actually matters. But vice versa you won't get any better colour and detail with v-log either. But in my test after this video, I realised that with v-log one can make really accurate WB modifications that you can't do as accurate in HLG. So if you are to shoot totally run and gun, then v-log might still be a better option, but you need to buy it for to use it.
@JDW-
@JDW- 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I never purchased vLog. Initially, I shot in Cine-D on my GH5 to get better DR, but now I enjoy even greater DR with HLG. I purchased Leeming HLG LUT to convert Rec.2020 to Rec.709 with good color rendition, and the newest version Leeming HLG LUT works about as well as the free Driftwood LUT for me -- good, but the end result is not comparable to the colors of your videos. I signed up for the GH5 MINI COURSE and have been watching those videos and am now considering the purchase of your kit. Prior to purchase I just wanted to confirm if shooting in HLG is indeed superior to shooting in vLog. If I don't need to buy vLog, I won't. (By the way, I edit in FCPX 10.4.)

Well there is few possibilities, you are exposing incorrectly and capturing your data with a noisy part of the Dynamic range... or you have a really high standard for noies. There is noise in every video footage out there. Some have more some have less. It's just the physics of sensors. Or then you have a broken sensor, but I would assume the others first. Here is a video about exposure it might help if you don't have experience with ot: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z7SEZL1zx7HTZ2g.html

@QuicksilverSG
@QuicksilverSG 6 жыл бұрын
This is ludicrously backwards. Shooting in Cine-D and converting to V-log in post will not improve your footage, it is one of the most misguided things you can do with a GH5. V-log L is engineered purely to maximize the dynamic range of IMAGE CAPTURE, it is not intended as a post-production grading format. This video's earlier advice is correct: With GH5 V-log L footage, you should use a calibrated LUT to convert it into Rec 709 format before attempting to grade it with other tools. But when you shoot in Cine-D, the footage is already in Rec 709 format, straight out of the camera, and it is TOTALLY POINTLESS to convert it into V-log format. If you do so, you will gain ZERO improvement in dynamic range and will only wind up converting it back to Rec 709 format at some later point in the grading process.
@JooWorks
@JooWorks 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, you will not recover any data you didn't capture, just like I said in the video. cine-d is not calibrated image profile. It's colour accuracy is really bad. When you turn it to v-log and then to rec709 with an accurate LUTs you will not gain any more data, but you gain calibrated (or at least more calibrated) colours and a format that is easier for grading. When it comes to DR cine-d doesn't have that much of a difference to v-log. Tested it my self and there is starting to pop up videos on youtube talking about the same thing. Like this: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bpx0q5iirtLOio0.html But I'm not here to talk about the DR difference or not. I will not take any stand on the issue. Yes, LUTs are good start, but one needs to be mindful of which LUT to use. There is big differences between different LUTs. The first video inside the course compares few different LUTs for V-log.
@QuicksilverSG
@QuicksilverSG 6 жыл бұрын
If your actual concern is to improve Cine-D color accuracy, V-log conversion is a time-consuming sidestep. There's a much more efficient and accurate way to calibrate Cine-D footage: Shoot a standard 4X6 color chart (such as X-rite), download Adobe's free DNG Profile Editor, and make your own calibrated LUT. This will produce superior results because it is calibrated specifically to your camera's tone curve, shooting at the color temperature of those particular lighting conditions. Do this with every scene and it will give you consistent color balance across all footage, regardless of lighting variations.
@JooWorks
@JooWorks 6 жыл бұрын
Or shoot with a 32x16 colour chart and the x-rite with 6 different exposures and offset WB to four different directions, create the LUT with 3D lut creator, which is the best tool on the market for this kind of work, minimise any human interaction to the process and calibrate the LUTs twice during the creation process and voila you will get even better result. :-D
@JooWorks
@JooWorks 6 жыл бұрын
That's the process I used for the LUTs inside the KIT.
@QuicksilverSG
@QuicksilverSG 6 жыл бұрын
That would work as well, but if you're going to that much trouble and expense, you can cut to the chase and produce conversion LUT's calibrated specifically to color correct GH5 Cine-D shot at specific color temperatures. That way you can work directly on Cine-D footage with no need to waste time round-tripping into V-log along the way. V-log offers no post production advantages over Rec 709 - it is NOT independent of white balance, is not standarized to anything more than Panasonic's proprietary specifications, and your monitor is calibrated to display Rec 709, not V-log. White balance is by far the most problematic issue with color correction of all non-RAW capture formats, with V-log footage just as much as Cine-D. Properly normalizing WB is the crucial step, regardless of your preferred camera profile.

Winton Wilmot apparently the luts work with the gh4 as well many have tested and said that they do. I have not, but will sooner or later test them. You can try them for 14days and if you don't like them just hit me with a message and I'll refund you.

Has anyone tried Leeming LUT One and compared to this? I'm currently using Paul Leeming's LUT for my Canon DSLRs to get correct REC 709 (I love it) and was just curious if anyone did a comparison.

Hello, does the Color Correction Kit also works with V-Log or any other footage coming from the GH4. Thank you in advanve.

I have use the kit with gh4, with nice results. If you shoot 8bits and v-log the quality is bit bad, but cine-d works just fine on gh4.

So basically shoot in HLG then convert to VLog (using your Lut) then grade until satisfied? Is this what you are saying? Cheers from NZ
@JooWorks
@JooWorks 6 жыл бұрын
Yep. The image quality between Vlog and HLG in 10bit is very close favouring just a bit HLG. HLG doesn't work in 8bit, so for good 8bit footage, I recommend using cine-d with one iso stop lower than you would vlog. Cine-d has less wiggle room when it comes to post-processing than vlog and HLG but it has less macro blocking and banding than V-log.

Do you have any “tutorials” where you teach something other than “buy my LUT pack”?

maurice porcelain the only file you need or can load to the camera, is the monitorin lut. On the free course on the settings page, you'll find a video about how to expose and how to set up the camera.

Sony shoots in it's own gamut and you need own values for that. I'll check if I can find them.

So after I saw your video and since Vlog with a lut is absolutely the same like to shoot in other profiles I have one question because I confused. When we must shoot on Vlog? 1.Just to color grade(or post prossesing) as we want? 2.When we have difficult situations like a scene in daylight with much contrast ? 3.When we shoot multicam using other model cameras and want the same colors at our final video? Do you believe that Panasonic is try to make more money fooling us to buy an upgrade? And one more question. Why to convert from cine D to Vlog and not to shoot Vlog from the start? Any answer it will appreciate Thanks
@JooWorks
@JooWorks 6 жыл бұрын
The DR difference between v-log and other profiles is rather minimal, but there is a BIG difference in the gamut (colour space). With V-log and with HLG you can shoot with a really bad WB difference and still be able to fix it to normal, but with other profiles like cine-D and STD. You need to have the WB correct in camera. You should shoot in v-log or HLG if you wanna capture the best colours. When shooting in STD / cine-d shoot at 200 iso to get about the same DR, with less colour data. But cine-d / std has fewer compression artefacts in 8bit than vlog. HLG doesn't work in 8bit.

Joo.Works Thanks for the quick answer! You didn't answer me for the second question. I forgot to ask when we shoot Vlog and we want to apply a lut to achieve a different look when we should add it after the conversion with your lut to Rec 709, before or to just apply the lut for the different look?
@JooWorks
@JooWorks 6 жыл бұрын
:-D Didn't quite understand, but I'll still try to answer. There is few different kinds of LUTs inside the KIT. 1.type of LUTs inside the KIT are used in post to make cine-d/STD/HLG as identical to V-log as possible. 2. Type is for fixing exposure and WB of V-log footage or the footage turned to v-log, 3. type is for turning V-log to rec709 in 8 different options. 4. type is LUTs that can be used as tools for Colour correction or general monitoring. So the process goes like this: 1. You shoot in cine-d for example, normally or -1 stop darker is you shoot with iso 200. 2. You apply cine-d to v-log LUT. 3. (Optional) you apply a WB/EXP fixing luts. 4. You apply v-log to rec709 LUT choosing from 8 optional looks. so if you make sure you have correct wb and exp when you shoot. You only use cine-d to v-log -LUT and V-log to rec709 LUT and you are done. Type 3. and type 4. LUTs are optional. Did I answer your question? :-D

In paper yes, and in my test is has maybe 1/3 stop less DR in the highlights and bout 1/5 more in the shadows, only be looking at the image. So pretty much the same.
