This is the little Datsun 1200 Turbo I drove at the IPRA Nationals 2018 held at Tailem Bend built and owned by Simon Phillips from VIC Dyno Hire. We are constantly battling mid corner oversteer issues with the car and haven't been able to tune it out. A change for this race was in the wrong direction and didn't help with tyre life over the 6 lap race.
This was my first race in the Datto and was a very different experience to what I have raced recently. First off driver fatigue hits you earlier because the car is much more phyical to drive with no power steering and the technique required to drive it. Tyre wear is an issue. The main issue in this race was battling a sticking front master cylinder that would keep brake pressure on the rear and nothing on the front when trail braking, it might not look it but that was tricky to balance. I left the video rolling on the start grid so you could see me playing around trying to get the right grip position on the clutch pedal and then struggling to see the lights because the windscreen banner was so low that I couldn't see them! I was pretty happy with the start in the end, the secondary rev limiter worked really well. A few mistakes through out the race but it was all a learning curve and the team and I both had fun along the way.
