@@rufusblasfemus3018 Imagine people growing up on near daily diets of cartoons, sci fi TV, comic books, magazine ads, silly Hollywood "romantic comedies" and 19th century English novels. Then imagine how unhappy they are to learn that nowhere, nothing and nobody in real life is like that. Pervasive discontentment is easy to understand. "Suffering is not getting what you want. My younger brother had some emotional distress as a pre school aged child. The psychologist put him on medication and told my mom that she shouldn't discipline him because he had anxiety. Now he's 55 years old...and never made anything of himself. He's been on welfare for the past 25 years. He has a victim mentality. When he moans and groans about his life's situation to me, there's nothing I can really say because he won't listen and he will just become angry.

@Elizabeth Brower I mean... Physical force and fear of such a punishment can possibly not be as harmful as some think, especially if used sparingly... That said, I don't think it's strictly necessary... I think you can explain that sort of thing to a 3 year old...If they have trouble with that, you just put some effort into holding their hand so they can't run into the road... Maybe use one of those harness things...You can reward them with freedom if they behave, rather than punish them for doing something stupid... Maybe a bit of both is good... There are various ways to do things... The important thing is that you are consistent in rewarding the good and punishing the bad... Preferably fairly evenly... It can take more effort and time, but might have better results long term... The issue with relying too much on spanking though, is that you may teach them that hitting is the way to handle things they don't like... You might need to explain that the road is dangerous and why you're punishing them anyway or they might just think you are hitting them for no good reason... It's probably like most things where it's fine if used right and in moderation... But yeah... I'm also not convinced that it ever HAS to be done and that there aren't other alternatives... I don't know... balance is usually important though, naturally... There's probably truth to both sides... As someone who deals with stuff like anxiety and depression, I don't think coddling is the right way to go, but even minor punishments can overwhelm in the wrong circumstances... Never disciplining is probably stupid, but the same tricks often won't work... For some people, challenging them can fire them up, for others they are more likely to shut down... You have to learn the right balance for the individual... That's my philosophy anyway... It sucks though, because it's hard work lol.

There is no contradictions between being a victim and taking responsibility. I have experienced domestic violence and abuse, so I am a victim of that - while simultaneously thinking of what I can do to avoid similar situations in the future and how I can work with my self so I am less likely to be a victim again. But no matter how much responsibility I take, my past will always be a part of me and influence me. People have a very destructive understanding of responsibility because we want absolute control. It's either 100 percent you or 100 percent me. We have a problem saying "I can take responsibility for this, because this is what I have reasonable influence over, the rest is just the randomness of life". We don't accept being vulnerable and insufficient, but all us are in some way.
@selinnazsur2328

Sorry for whatever you've gone through. I agree with you on how victimhood and taking responsibility can happen at the same time, but please do keep in mind that there is a subtle difference between being a victim (of abuse especially) and what we call "victim mentality". Some who claim that they're "victims" do it specifically to escape from their responsibilities and from accountability, to make others pity them and treat them differently. It's commendable when people who are true victims work hard to make things better for themselves and their loved ones, but those with victim mentality are, more often than not, detrimental for their efforts.

Makes sense and gives insight into the true meaning if the belief that the life you save is your own... in that a life saved is then the heroes ... some see this as owed to them as payment for saving though its responsibility that birthed it... People would save people from punishment risking the duck always being a duck but also having to own that if the duck caused damage they otherwise would not have been able to do then the fault/responsibility belongs to the one who broke them out

The allure of victimhood is so appealing that it’s almost irresistible for some, because it’s a win/win - if you’re a victim then every success in your life warrants extra credit because as a victim you had to overcome even greater challenges to obtain it. At the same time every failure is not your fault or responsibility because, after all, you’re just a victim of your circumstances. Add to this the fact that we have a culture that loves the “underdog”, and it’s extremely tempting to cast yourself as that underdog when you write the story of your life in your mind. The only way to overcome this temptation is with wisdom. I believe that wisdom is only found thru Jesus Christ.

There are also Greek myths of gods that ate their own child LOL but he definitely did not mean edible it just doesn't make sense. He doesn't go into the Oedipus complex here but I suppose it's a variant of the same problem. It's about a king who fears the strength of his child, because it could overthrow him. In the case of victimhood the parent keeps the child weak to feel stronger, important and loved in a false sense.

This lecture topic of responsibility providing meaning reminds me of the short speech that Charles Bronson's character gives to the village boys in the original Magnificent 7. The boys come to Bernardo and ask to go with him as he's leaving because they say their fathers are cowards and they're ashamed. Bernardo spanks one of the boys and says: Don't ever say that again about your fathers. They are not cowards! You think I am brave because I carry a gun. Your fathers are much braver because they carry responsibility. For you, your brothers, your sisters and your mothers. This responsibility is like a big rock that weighs a ton. It bends and it twists them until finally it buries them under the ground. And nobody says they have to do this. They do it because they love you and because they want to. I have never had this kind of courage. Running a farm. Working like a mule everyday with no guarantee what will become of it - this is bravery. That is why I never even started anything like that. That's why I never will. I tear up every time I see that scene.

Just one little detail.. Pinocchio IS NOT a movie.. it's a novel by Collodi and gives a very extensive picture of Italy in the 19th century. The main message is about going around life without a conscience (the cricket, who is a metaphor of Pinocchio's conscience, gets killed at the beginning of the book.. unlike in the cartoon) as "young people do", being selfish, cause pain to the ones who love you and be taken advantage and get in trouble for the pursuit of pleasure. But then fininding and growing your own conscience (and awareness of yourself) with experience and becoming mature and responsible.

@@FlorisDVijfde It's the same for me, Floris. I haven't had children since most of my adult life has been spent untangling the abuse and neglect. I devote my work now to helping others who have experienced similar situations. I just feel a bit deflated by all the dismissive remarks about such trauma. Anyone who has experienced such things knows the depth to which the fractures go. I'm certainly an admirer of J.P, but I would like to hear a little more of the Rogerian empathy about those of us who are left struggling with trauma bonds and all the internalised feelings of blame and shame for the suffering we have endured. I'm glad to hear that you are finding meaning in your growth.

@@WinstonSmith22 Look for other bright minds of the same caliber and find strength. JP tends to have his blind spots and a one size fits all syndrom. Lotta "guru"'s have that. Beware! JP does not seem a specialist on abuse but you can find psychologists that are. I've been inspired a bit by Nathaniel Branden. He understood self esteem much better than I did and it enlightened me. He ultimately emphasizes self conscience. Can't love others if you don't love (and know) yourself. Not in the narcissist way but the compassionate. Interestingly JP does not believe in self esteem.

I have read both of your comments. What do you do that you help others that were in similar situations as yours? Otherwise, working with a skilled therapist can help you. Spend time reading, journaling, and engaging in other "hands on" activities. Life is cruel. Mother nature and father time don't give a damn about your wants and needs. You can admit what happened to you, but know that you aren't a child anymore. You are an adult who has power and direction to mold a better existence for yourself.

@@proudatheist2042 Honestly, that's probably the silliest advice I've ever heard. People who have been abused carry the trauma at every level of their being. The effects of suffering such experiences doesn't simply disappear because life goes on. Trauma gets separated and repressed. Telling someone that they are "an adult" and that life doesn't care, sounds like it's more about your own denial, I'm afraid. I say that as somebody who co-owns my own company, training teachers and Social workers on how to deal with those who have suffered trauma and abuse. Do the internet and people who have endured such pain a favour, and keep your bandwagon cliches to yourself, buddy.

The unfortunate fact is we are all victims of a system which perpetuates and denies the concept of human dignity, the right to be valued, respected, and to receive ethical treatment and protection of our inherent rights. Human beings are not the means to others' ends. The conditioned response to competition is the pursuit of own advantage and self-interest to take advantage of others as means of achieving this goal. Treating others with dignity imposes on humans the moral requirement not only to avoid harming but to actively assist one another in achieving and maintaining a state of well-being. Perhaps if we taught this the "victim mentality" would not be such a prevalent cause for concern.

They just do things with assumption. If they want to be on top, they open the network to anyone, do not only certain people that they like. This is not about like or dislike. This is about to achieve the purpose to be on top.

Typically material intelligence will begin at least two degrees of separation from a foundation stable for understanding. the fact that anyone sees the world made up of victims and tyrants is a distraction from the need to continually balance the victim/tyrant self. Even this realization needs belief in a greater intelligence than our own to be understood. That Greater intelligence is not material.

I have no background music but I too can be long winded in a word salad kind of way if I want to be. I wonder if the existing system (Western Society's : "get educated, get a job and make money etc.") is not working for the masses? The careers one could hope to survive from have narrowed over time. The educational system is a racket. It is funny to go to a Gov. "Unemployment Office" and / or computer job search via their system and you'll find many job offers of the people that never go to or need to go to such a system to find work (many Engineer and nurse jobs to be had - and it has been this way all my life). So in order not to "betray" oneself many may have; in a way, checked-out of society and exist on the fringes of it only because it is still there. So, is turning your back on as much of the system; set up prior to one's birth, a betrayal to self or is it honoring thy true self. In other words; instead of staying with a system (as if to "fake it, until you make") because you can't make it or you believe it is rigged against you; is moving on to some other way of living really a betrayal of one self. Does a job a robot can and should do really meaningful to a human being? Is unrealistically low wages below the cost of living worth staying at if you can't; for whatever reason, move "upwards?" Living in a society (Western) with an abundance; yet, we never had an abundance of meaningful employment equal to the cost of living as if this is a motivator to keep people working jobs they find little meaning in. As of late; many illegal aliens flock to America seemingly because living standards and opportunity is better? Yet, many Americans remain underemployed or unemployed. Some say that the illegal alien is to displace the American worker because they are cheap laborers? Is this in a system of laws? If Americans can't exist with a minimum wage in some states not raised since 2009; yet, the cost of living went through the roof; how is it that illegal aliens will survive once the gravy train comes to an end? Will they all line themselves up and demand a free flight home? We (America) have a system in place to accept immigrants and not illegal aliens for a reason. Does our preexisting "system" give way to all that are born to it. Does it give the best chance to equally succeed with a meaningful life the individual is meant to have as a human being? Are we as a society keeping some people down (or not allowing their individuals "Maslow's hierarchy of needs to occur?" Are we keeping some people down in order to make our personal existence better? Is it the individuals responsibility to somehow recognize in a self awareness way to seek what is meaningful to them or is it the parents of children such as your own to be provided the wisdom to recognize this on their own in a system that can fail many people. If fewer and fewer people can't fit-in or are unwilling to comply to a ever narrowing set of rules or cultural ways to a preexisting system that works great for a few but not the masses: Is it then wrong for so many to turn away as much as they can from such a system and seek meaning in another way? It is as if they exist in a system within a system because they themselves can't instantly change what existed for a very long time before them overnight and /or may not be able. (JF)

I believe you have a great way of making a good argument about the current world we live in. WESTEREN or otherwise. However, I also believe, the system works for the masses but not for the few. Yes, I agree the system may fall apart at any given time. But I think we should continue discussing the good and bad to make it the continued best system in the world. Stay with the good and do best to make the system better. As apposed to tearing down the system and going with a system known in history to not only fail. But to make humanity for anyone but the 1% even possible. Not to suggest that is in any way what your brilliant statements are referring to. Western system has made the world a better place like nothing else in history ever. And that's not to say it's perfect or hasn't failed at some things. So, let's continue by working on the some things, and create some better things. It may never be perfect. But let's not destroy it all thinking, or being told and indoctrinated by some, that's there is an utopian system just waiting for us to try again. Despite its past failures. Plural! Poverty has been reduced in the world due to western system. Technologies, sciences, and mathematics have almost reached light speed in its research, development, and implementation of products and services that make life better for the masses. Ask the ones that are trying to tear down the system if they have moble phones. Access to internet. Access to food (some which is offered free). Or if they have their vap pipes, cigarettes, and sometimes their chosen narcotics, alcohol, cannabis, etc.; etc. Choices made. Excuses sought. Hard changes never made. Expecting gov (we the people) to pay for everything. And it's come to everything. Thier children (no matter how many). Their abortions (no matter how many). Their college. Their Trans gender operations. Therapy. Food. Elec. Water. And their (they are) white, black, hispanic, asian, aliens, and everything under the sun. I've said too much. And no where near as eloquent as what you have said. Or as fine of a different perspective of viewing "The System". Peace jb

Anyone who is really worth as an individual, is not allowed to have that type of mentality. God is absolutely that way. I've never been allowed that. It's a prohibition to expect to be seen as a victim. I'm sick and tired of premeditated wickedness intentions claiming to be victims, in blame shifting virtue bluffing emotional manipulation about it ALL, instead of whom premeditatedly harm. I do have that right to claim, but I don't use it. If that was the case, I'd have been suing my parents and so many other people since then. Then again I always wonder who does God want to redeem or not, take vengeance upon or not. I'm so done with it all, but I don't see any way out or other way around it all. Don't expect me to be a bad person to be anything else in the world.

Many victims I've met actually take on far too much responsibility, because it's very difficult to accept how little control a human being has over their life. So they are often overwhelmed with guilt, which makes them anxious and they often underperform. Healing requires first of all recognising the fact of being a victim and accepting that fact. After that one can proceed to elaborate the feelings that come with that, usually they'll experience anger. That anger is important, because it gives them the strength to do things for themselves and improve their situation. They then can proceed to rewatch what happened to them from different points of view and get a broader idea of what happened and why it happened and if they are lucky they can forgive. I'm really not fond of promoting the idea that you can just move on without elaborating what happened and how that affects you. Denial doesn't work well on a long term, it often leads to compulsive behaviour. So I'd be careful with the advice in this video. If you've experienced trauma, before you follow any advice in this video, please check if you tend to feel a lot of shame and guilt. If you do, you most likely never really accepted that you're a victim. It's not a failure to be a victim by the way. We all can be victims, coincidence doesn't care if you're a good person or how hard you try.
