Do you really love something if you are unwilling to sacrifice for it?
"A religion that does not require the sacrifice of all things, never has power sufficient to produce the faith necessary unto life and salvation"- Joseph Smith
Jordon Peterson Source: • Video (You Are Not Committed To Something Unless You Are Willing To Sacrifice For It)
2 Nephi 2:16
Wherefore, the Lord God gave unto man that he should act for himself. Wherefore, man could not act for himself save it should be that he was enticed by the one or the other.
Mosiah 3:19
For the natural man is an enemy to God, and has been from the fall of Adam, and will be, forever and ever, unless he yields to the enticings of the Holy Spirit, and putteth off the natural man and becometh a saint through the atonement of Christ the Lord..
Alma 34:34-35
..For that same spirit which doth possess your bodies at the time that ye go out of this life, that same spirit will have power to possess your body in that eternal world. 35 For behold, if ye have procrastinated the day of your repentance even until death, behold, ye have become subjected to the spirit of the devil, and he doth seal you his; therefore, the Spirit of the Lord hath withdrawn from you, and hath no place in you, and the devil hath all power over you; and this is the final state of the wicked.
Alma 41:13-15
13 O, my son, this is not the case; but the meaning of the word restoration is to bring back again evil for evil, or carnal for carnal, or devilish for devilish-good for that which is good; righteous for that which is righteous; just for that which is just; merciful for that which is merciful. 14 Therefore, my son, see that you are merciful unto your brethren; deal justly, judge righteously, and do good continually; and if ye do all these things then shall ye receive your reward; yea, ye shall have mercy restored unto you again; ye shall have justice restored unto you again; ye shall have a righteous judgment restored unto you again; and ye shall have good rewarded unto you again. 15 For that which ye do send out shall return unto you again, and be restored; therefore, the word restoration more fully condemneth the sinner, and justifieth him not at all.
Read:
2 Nephi 2:11-12
11 For it must needs be, that there is an opposition in all things. If not so.. righteousness could not be brought to pass, neither wickedness, neither holiness nor misery, neither good nor bad. Wherefore, all things must needs be a compound in one; wherefore, if it should be one body it must needs remain as dead, having no life neither death, nor corruption nor incorruption, happiness nor misery, neither sense nor insensibility. 12 Wherefore, it must needs have been created for a thing of naught; wherefore there would have been no purpose in the end of its creation. Wherefore, this thing must needs destroy the wisdom of God and his eternal purposes, and also the power, and the mercy, and the justice of God.
2 Nephi 2:27-29
27 Wherefore, men are free according to the flesh; and all things are given them which are expedient unto man. And they are free to choose liberty and eternal life, through the great Mediator of all men, or to choose captivity and death, according to the captivity and power of the devil; for he seeketh that all men might be miserable like unto himself. 28 And now, my sons, I would that ye should look to the great Mediator, and hearken unto his great commandments; and be faithful unto his words, and choose eternal life, according to the will of his Holy Spirit; 29 And not choose eternal death, according to the will of the flesh and the evil which is therein, which giveth the spirit of the devil power to captivate, to bring you down to hell, that he may reign over you in his own kingdom.
Doctrine and Covenants 97:8
8 Verily I say unto you, all among them who know their hearts are honest, and are broken, and their spirits contrite, and are willing to observe their covenants by sacrifice-yea, every sacrifice which I, the Lord, shall command-they are accepted of me.

The law of sacrifice is something everyone lives even if they don't acknowledge it. We sacrifice our time, wealth, and reputation to one thing or another. A Christian is supposed to be willing to sacrifice all things to God. One of my favorite apostles is Neal A. Maxwell. His teachings on sacrifice are informative. On sacrificing the lamb or the ox he made the observation that God wanted us to sacrifice the animal within us.

We are to enjoy the great things that God blesses us with hope and faith. (Galatians 5:22-23) (sic) The Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. There is no law against these things!

As i think about Dr. Peterson and how he teaches without knowing, probably, LDS theology what comes to mind is the rich young ruler. I want to liken it to religion. In the world today which religion does in a lot of cases when you convert do you loose social and family ties? Converting to the LDS Church. In these cases Christ is asking our brothers and sisters to be willing to give all that up and follow him. Thar may be similar to why it maybe hard for those lIke Dr. Peterson to make the change because they would be shunned by those that currently attended their events even though the event may not have anything to do with religion. There is also as it has been called the accusatory fog that mainstream Christianity has place around the Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints..

When JP said "The evidence that you generate yourself that youre moving toward the better future" reminded me of the principle from the lectures on faith that "An actual knowledge that the course of life which he is pursuing, is according to His (God's) will".

I’m finding it difficult to find the connection between Jordan’s talk of our not having as much actual control or power over our thoughts, actions and desires and the scriptures you use in conjunction. His first 3 or so minutes Jordan articulates very well how so much of our actions and behaviors are merely autopilot and influenced by the zillion concretions that led up to the present moment in time. We do have awareness and agency to a point but much of our life is acting and being lived by unconscious automatic programming that has been constructed throughout our life experience. Like the example he used, we don’t choose what we are interested in, we just are, it arises from within. My explanation of that phenomenon is that it is that the interest that “appears” was constructed /created within us by the zillion tiny seemingly insignificant actions and interactions co creations made in our mind every minute of our lives. We are just completely unaware. I do not believe it is by some external force acting upon us. I completely agree that much of our life is lived from the subconscious. What connections are you seeing here?
@davidjanbaz7728
@davidjanbaz7728 11 ай бұрын
We R both formed from our DNA and ancestors and our free will / agency that allows us to choose in any given situation. So our choices may well have an ingrained component in our DNA and this is what he's talking about as a subconscious predilection to any choice. Jordan views the Bible through a psychological paradigm and he can get good insights but he also gets very erroneous ones , because like the Mormon paradigm of interpretations of the Bible they Aren't what the original writers had in mind in their context and time period and the audience to whom they were written 2 : the Bible is only written 4 us in our time period and we must understand it in their context or erroneous interpretations will happen and wrong applications will become the norm.

@davidjanbaz7728 you should move on rather than looking for victims you can try to influence. You don't believe in the church, yet you constantly attack it. A false Christian always does that.

Jacob, I’m a fan of JP too. This playlist in its current form plays well in the LDS echo chamber but the delivery could be improved. There’s too much tongue-in-cheek irony in the tone. It’s apologetic which makes it less approachable. I think if you watched the W.L Craig and JP’s “meaning of life” debate I would say Thoughtful Faith’s approach is the way Craig debates. I’m a fan of Craig too, but his approach can be taken as arrogant or apathetic. It plays well to echo chamber audiences. But to expand the appeal I would not “appropriate” JPs remarks as representing LDS theology. Instead consider using discussion/conversational format that seeks to understand how JPs viewpoints have convergences with LDS belief.

I think this format actually served the purpose of finding convergence between his philosophy and the doctrines of the restored gospel quite well where conversation could have muddied it.

@@cameronreed1411 You’re right, but it feels too reductionist to me. Maybe it’s not appreciating the nuance of either perspective enough, and perhaps it needs to be muddied a bit because it’s not so black and white. I don’t think you can commandeer either viewpoint into the other. They’re not entirely compatible. But I like the idea of exploring JP’s ideas in the context of restoration theology. Just encouraging exploration of a better format - not sure what it would look like though.

I went to his last talk in Salt Lake City. They had a Q&A, and audience members could submit questions online and see other’s questions. Over half of the questions were some form of “have you/will you read the Book of Mormon?” When the Q&A happened, they avoided all of those questions and spent quite some time digging for others. He’s being purposely blind to it, for what reason I don’t know.
