Someone sigma Chad male-d me about my accent once. I was born and raised in Colorado, only other place I've lived is California, yet this guy kept fucking insisting I had an accent from somewhere in northern Europe. Then he switched to "well you use weird big words, so that's why you sound foreign". Bro, I've got a slight stutter and a big vocabulary, how is that an accent?? Also I live with a Scotsman and i like to think I'm great at understanding Scottish accents but I'll be honest, about every tenth sentence I just completely fail to understand. And this is a man I've known for most of my life and lived with for years.

I think that people from the UK are generally exposed to more accents that you would consider relevant than people in the West are. Like, I'd say Americans can probably tell regional American accents apart better than they could pinpoint out accents from different countries. But I think we have to remember that the U.S. is like 40 times bigger than the U.K. Someone from the U.K. is exposed to like Scottish, Irish, Welsh, and a myriad of English dialects (not to mention that England as a big dick colonial superpower has spread its accent everywhere, it gives you a more nuanced ear to tell apart other accents like Australian, South African, New Zealand). Meanwhile the average American is exposed to like, more Americans.

I got the Romanian and Filipino, though mostly because the Romanian guy mentioned there being a stigma around his ethnic group, and the Filipino guy because that's the only place I know that's in Asia but people have Latin-based names. Lol, my thoughts on the South African accent is the same. All the time I'm like "it's the one that sounds like a UK accent but unfamiliar".

Canadian is so easy. Just wait for them to say “out” or “about” and you’ll instantly know. Once you realize all Canadians sound the same when saying those words, you’ll never be able to unhear it

Wow I actually had it narrowed down to romania and latvia on the romanian guy. I literally have no idea what either of those accents sound like but ive been trying to memorize the world map so countries are really fresh in my mind and those places just sounded right

As a Hispanic person myself, I almost cried when you guessed “Spanish” for the Macedonian guy😭 I’m sorry, but he just did not sound Spanish at allllll. Also it was crazy to me that no one got Filipino for my boi Robert (that’s probably just because I grew up in a town with a very large Filipino community tho)

It's almost like we grew up hearing the regional accents of an entirely separate nation. Riddle me this Eddy Burblack, can you tell the difference between a Louisiana accent and a Mississippi accent? Or S. Carolina and southern Virginia? (Not bein salty btw, lol)

It's funny you mention Canadian, cause Canadian is one of the few accents, I, as an American, can't recognize a lot of the time.

@@kaepiper Yeah, it's subtle tbh, compared to other accents, even when it's "thick". It's just certain vowels in specific areas that really tip it off, and it can sometimes sound slightly French at first depending on the situation.
