I was a fashion major in college. Had an amazing professor who taught me to wash clothes by texture. I never use fabric softener in the machine. It will affect the fabric longevity of your laundry. If you want fabric to be softer put white vinegar in the fabric softener dispenser in your washer. It’s more environmentally friendly and helps to soften clothes. I always use cold water unless whites as you said. I have not used a dry cleaner in 20+ years. Cold water is so key to clothing fibers lasting longer.

My son’s paternal grandmother taught him to do his own laundry while visiting her one summer. He was only 10 years old and he loved it. He felt so grown up. I didn’t know what to think until he came home. Bless her wisdom. I haven’t touched his clothes since that summer. He continued keeping up with his own laundry and my husband started doing his own. Took so much off of my plate.

I watched your video for laundry years ago and after using your texture sorting method, it transformed my laundry day. I still use it to this day. It has cut down on laundry time significantly.

❤️❤️❤️If you watched this video, do what Jordan does!! I changed my laundry routine after seeing the video she posted years ago and have never looked back. The only difference for me is that I use vinegar in every load for a deodorizer and fabric softener. It works great and it’s so much cheaper. This lady knows what she is talking about!! Between laundry, shelf cooking, budgeting, organizing and planning, I have learned so much from Jordan. I have purchased a lot of what she creates and sells and I have never regretted any of it!! Thank you Jordan for putting in all of the time to make these videos and products for us that need the extra help!! I can say you have definitely helped me out in many, many ways.

Love the video. It seems that fabric softener just builds up inside the drum and turns black as it contains oil which goes rancid. It’s a mold factory inside the machine infecting every load. Vinegar is a great replacement and the smell evaporates.

Dawn dish detergent is another thing to keep in the laundry room. Put a bit of it on anything greasy and rub it in. Grease stains are impossible to see on wet fabric. So line dry it to make sure the spot is out. If not, rewash. But here's the best part: I've used Dawn on spots that have been there for a long time or have been through the dryer, and it can STILL get them out a lot of the time! Dawn is my secret weapon in the laundry room. 🙂

In UK it’s normal for us to have a washing line/rotary airer in the back garden that we put up in spring summer or on a dry day. Lots of people have a hole in the ground it slips into and leave it there and have a cover on it when not in use, but you can take it out and store it over winter and it comes with a little cap so you dont catch a foot on the hole. Tumbler dryers are great for winter and rainy days though. Plus the sun can help get rid of the stains a bit too.

This is the norm in NZ as well. Seems a tad bit strange to me to use the dryer all the time. That’s a winter thing down here 😊

My mom never used a dryer in 87 years. She had 2 outdoor lines, one was under the eaves, and a basement line, and dried everything on the line year round. She felt that dryers were too harsh on clothes, and I agree. I only use the dryer for sheets, towels, pjs, and socks and underwear. Almost all outerwear we started to hang up about 15 years ago after noticing that even on the delicate dry cycle, stuff would shrink. We're 4 realtively tall women and one of my daughters is 6'0" tall, so we can't afford to risk shrinkage, especially for her because it's nearly impossible to find clothes that are long enough to fit her as it is, unless she buys men's clothes. We have 3 drying racks of different configurations and use doorways, shower rods, etc, to hang clothes up. Yes, it takes longer, but our clothes last at least 3 times as long and look nearly new even after several years of wear. And it cuts down on the gas bill, our dryer's gas powered. Worth it.

Suggestion, use netted laundry bags for delicate items to help protect also items with strings or thin straps that can get tangled with other things

I use the sorting system taught here. I treat the front of most of my tops because I seem to always find a spot, a drip whatever… I don’t use fabric softener sheets… they leave a film on the lint screen in the dryer and that screen will hold water instead of being “breathable.” I love a few wool balls in the dryer.

I use Palmolive dish soap as a pretreatment on any greasy/oily splashes or stains on clothing before going in the wash. It’s the best.

Dawn Powerwash is great on deodorant buildup inside the armpits too, blew me away. Just spray, wad it up, and wash when ready.@@jamierussellville101

You can also sprinkle a bit of talc / baby powder onto the grease / oil stain to absorb the oils before throwing it into the wash.

I use a more "traditional" sorting system. I have darks like blacks, dark blues, dark reds and so on, colors, whites and light colors, towels and rugs, and sheets. Sometimes i do light colors with whites if they are little. Darks and colors go on warm, whites, towels and sheets go on a hot to boiling (60°-90°C). I also wash jackets on warm (40°C), blankets on hot (60°-90°C) and shoes on warm (30°-40°C). I also use a color catcher for the colors and sometimes the darks because I also mix darks and colors into one if they are not much. I also don't use dryer sheets only wool dryer balls. I use liquid for darks and powder for whites, towels, sheets and blankets. For whites i use washing soda as an alternative on bleach because i feel like it yellows my whites.

Each member of your family needs a delicates bag for Socks and Undies. They fill it up as they wear things. Ideally they each have a specific color on the zipper of the bag, so everyone can easily tell who each bag belongs to, and can dump the contents into their own drawer.

I have used vinegar as my fabric softener for years now and it's wonderful. Dryer sheets are so toxic I switched a decade or more ago to dryer balls and essential oils. I actually only use my dryer for sheets and towels I hang dry everything else. I was raised single parent so dryer was too expensive. Thanks for all the tips. I divide my clothes up the same way glad to find someone like me.

Life changing, money saving tip-- I use the dollar tree Tide lid to measure detergent. I throw away the big measuring caps. And just use the small measuring lid saved us so much money!!!!! Love you vids!

I’ve replaced my downy fabric softener with Downy Rinse & Refresh. Works great. In towels (I use all white) instead of fabric softener to keep them soft, I use white vinegar in the fabric softener compartment. I do use PODS for every wash. Regular Tide or Percil (because my front loader has a place for PODS (Electolux Washer). For the towels I use a clear POD (Seventh Generation). Loved your video. I personally use vinegar as a softener! It works great AND makes sure the get all the smells out! I only really religiously separate colors when it’s a brand new black or red item! Those still bleed occasionally. Definitely need to start washing my towels on hot though… been wondering why my towels smell off even when clean and I think I may now know why 😅

Teach your kids young! I started my son doing laundry before he could talk because he wanted to do what I was doing. So I let him. I helped him at that age a bit. By 3 he could run the machines by himself. Were his clothes folded perfectly? Nope. He learned and got better with practice over time. but he’s been doing his own laundry since then. He’s 17 now and I can’t remember the last time I touched his laundry.

Thanks for this update! I watched your first laundry video about 3-4 years ago and it was life-changing. Our clothes and our routine improved tremendously! One tip I found for our dryer is to use the timed dry on low heat for our clothes (similar to what you said about how you dry your own clothes). We get much better results than from the dryer pre-sets. For whites, I discovered a KZfaq video about using liquid blueing to make our whites look whiter and it worked great! We only have to use it once every few months (once a quarter works) to keep our whites looking like new. We use the soak cycle with the liquid blueing. We also use powdered whitener instead of bleach with the load of whites. Liquid bleach gives me respiratory issues so I avoid it as much as I can. The powder works great and we use less oxy powder with it as a result. I will be looking into using the cheaper liquid detergent for our dog and shop towels. That's a clever, money-saving move!

I started doing laundry like you when you posted years ago , wow it changed everything . Not only did it help the clothes stay amazing , but it also made it so I didn't dread doing the laundry . I do however fold and I do this straight out of the dryer so it one load at a time doesn't feel daunting, but i dont have 8 kids lol . It no longer seems like a huge task that no one wants to do!

Tip, if you have a harsh stain like grass, ink or blood. A mixture of Dawn soap, vinegar and water makes a great cleaner for clothing and even cloth furniture.

Instead of fabric softeners I use regular distilled white vinegar. Helps keep washer smelling nice and eliminates smell in clothes! Definitely a lot cheaper too!

I also watched your laundry video a few years ago. Since then, I sort my laundry by fabric which usually means a load of jeans/pants and tops. I have been washing them on warm, but I'm going to try using cold. As for drying, we call it "par boiling" our cotton clothes (tops). I toss the load in for about 7 to 10 minutes on normal dry, low temp. Then i hang all the tops on hangers. Jeans get dried all the way and hung on hangers too. My laundry room is in our basement, so I get dressed down there every morning. I also just bought those yellow and green hair things. Not sure I'm seeing a big difference, but 1 dog doesn't shed and the one does but her hair is 1/4" long. I love all your content!!!

We do this in South Africa. In summer it's like 35-40 degrees and we just hang things on the line outside. In winter on really rainy days we do use the tumble dryer but it uses so much electricity we really can't afford to use it that often.

I live in the Southern US and when it's finally pretty and warm where you could hang your clothes out the pollen is horrendous. Everything would be yellow and cause horrible allergy problems.

I live in the mountains of Southern California and there are several problems with hanging clothes outside to dry. Tree pollen is everywhere and if you have allergies you are asking for trouble. It is too cold most of the year to want to do it and many properties are built on hillsides so there is no place to hang a clothesline that’s not on a major slope. Finally, at almost 5000 feet elevation it is foggy and damp a lot of the time and the clothes would never dry.

YES I agree fully i am 58 my kids my boys are grown and gone and now i have taught my grown grandchildren how to sort laundry by whites and texture and i have only ever used white towels with all boys brother in laws friends 15 grandchildren white everything and bleach !! I just had the conversation with my older son and how he had to explain the white towel situation to his girlfriend when they first moved in together LOL !!

@cleanmyspace mentioned in one of her videos that you don't need to use hot water ever. She said the purpose of the hot water was to active the detergent however now a days detergent is much more advanced so we don't need hot water.

If you live in a mountain area like I do, where the cold water is really cold, you need to run the washer on hot at least once or twice a week or the detergent doesn’t dissolve all the way and clogs your hoses. That happened to me and luckily a friend was able to diagnose the problem and help me fix it. I too wash my clothing by thickness because thick items take more time to dry and lighter fabrics wear out faster when you over dry them.

For those of your kids that do their own laundry do they split their weeky load into 3-4 different loads to be able to sort by Fabric? This system makes a lot of sense but I wasn't sure how it would work with just one persons laundry.

I would like to know too. My 4 older kids (6, 11, 13 & 15yo) do their own laundry too, and just chuck everything in the wash. 😅 And being living in Australia, we get lots of sun, so we hang dry our clothes. I don't own a dryer.

Too complicated for me mama lol I’m lucky if the dang clothes go through the cycles to begin with. We separate by people. That’s it. Each person has their day. They wash clothes, then their bedding and towel. I have a whole video on how my large family does it

I was already using cold water for all my other laundry and then bleach and hot water for whites. Hubby works on appliances and he is always saying how bad fabric softener is so bad for washing machines. It clogs up the pipes.

I said no to fabric softener years ago! I do use some scent beads though to help the clothes smell nicer longer. I do use dryer sheets (I have a big box I haven't used up yet so when it's done I may go to the balls) but I DON'T throw a dryer sheet in with towels. I heard or read somewhere it prevents the towels from being as absorbent. And I do a mix of sorting. Most of my girls things can be considered "lights" so they get washed together. Hubby and I have either "heavy" or "light" clothes, rarely do I have anything I need to wash that's more delicate. I do towels separately and blankets/bedding separately. I'm really wanting a drying rack but I need to finish painting my laundry room before I get one. It's a slow and steady process.

I sort my laundry by jeans with jeans, shirts with shirts, well you get the idea 😅😅

I do laundry the same way! I wash cottons, synthetics, wool, towels all separately and I do whites on their own too.

I do have the same categories and more or less do sort the laundry like you do (I thought everyone does it like this 🤭🤣). I also like to use small clips to hold the socks together in different colours. Love those 😍

Nobody taught me how to sort laundry . Like washing jeans and shirt separately. Washing socks and underwear together. I knew about washing towels separately. Also didnt know before it was wrong to wash bulky item w delicate. So thankful for this video!!!!!!!!

I don’t use fabric softener either! I haven’t for many years. Same reason. I felt its added chemical and waste of money! Yay. I thought I was the only one who feels this way.

Glad this works for your huge family. I do disagree with some of it, but you do you. I do use fabric softener, but I water it down half and half with water. It really cuts down on static and I like stuff soft. Also, bras or anything made from super stretchy material should always be washed in cold and NO dryer. The heat is bad bad bad on elastic. Dryer sheets just melt a coating onto your clothes. Wool balls are awesome.
