From being an Olympic Gymnast in the 2012 Olympics and winning a gold in team competition, to becoming a head coach in the NCAA, Jordyn Wieber has had quite the journey. Post Olympics, Jordyn decided to enrolled at UCLA to study psychology, where she also volunteered as an assistant coach for the gymnastics team. Jordyn was recently named head coach for the Arkansas Razorbacks gymnastics program, becoming the youngest at this level, at only 23 years old. Here, Jordyn speaks with me about her journey and the steps she took to get where she is today.

I’m an Arkansan, and I thought Hunter Yurachek’s hiring of Jordyn as head coach was an absolutely brilliant decision. She may be the youngest, but in gymnastics, she started raking in the experience as a pre-teen, and she spent 4 years learning from the incredible Miss Val at UCLA. I look forward to great things from our program, and I think we’ve already set 2 program highest scores. That is amazing. I know we have an absolute gem with Jordyn as head coach of the Gymbacks!

I am From southern Illinois/southeast Missouri region and live about an hour west of stl now. I love Fayetteville though and Northern Arkansas in general. I go watch meets anytime I can. Gymnastics was a dream deferred for me. We couldn’t afford for me to do gymnastics. The closest competitive gym was like 2 hours away from us when I was a kid. I’m a Saluki and I bleed maroon but I absolutely love the Arkansas fans. They are so fun and like no other team. Arkansas was very wise to take a chance with her and I think she will take the program to several ncaa championships. I also think she is the type of person that will be loyal to the program. I don’t see her as the type to be hopping around for the $$

I really like what she says about coaching being about motivating the student to make the changes necessary to reach their goals. I would love to be either a midwife or an obgyn some day and I feel like that really is a great approach to coaching births, as well.

Sorry for the tangent but yeah Jordyn is so humble and has no problem with hard work. I am so happy to see her thriving now and so happy to hear that she is engaged and happy. After all those girls went through at the hands of Dr. Voldemort, USA gymnastics, MU, IOC, and all the adults that failed them, they deserve nothing but happiness and fulfilled dreams. They also deserve restitution for the ptsd they will have to battle for the rest of their lives. They are warriors and survivors and not victims. I’m glad they got the chance to be heard and to see their abuser brought to justice. However, it wasn’t enough. Even with the sentencing Nassar got, when you divide it by all the victims that have spoke out and who knows how many that haven’t, it’s just not enough. They deserve to be compensated financially and to never have to pay for therapy, mental health services, or physical health services ever again. USAgymnastics and the IOC owe it to them, to take care of their best interests now, since they never put their best interests first (or 2nd-25th). All they cared about was winning and making money. No price was ever too much to pay for winning, especially when it was the athletes paying the price.

Wow...volunteer to Head Coach....Ive know people who have been successful assistant coaches for years and never become a head coach. Very good for her!

Her name is the catalyst that put her in the running for a head coach position and bypass the assistant coach positions.

They choose the best option out of all of those who applied. She was the best option. Often people are good assistant coaches but would not be the best option for head coach (or don't even apply for the job).

@@SuAvaif she was the best option then the others must have had very little, if any, experience. I think that it was a risk picking her but she presented well during the application process and draws experience from Miss Val and others to help fill in if she doesn’t know something. I think that she really wants to figure it out too which is a good work quality.

Jordyn Wieber talked as a team manager giving pep talks what other team manager in the history of any sport had as much street cred to talk up these athletes.

Jordyn seems to seek out mentorship which is important. Hopefully that will set a precedent for other 20-30 somethings starting their career. Of course you will not know everything when you are starting a career and there are areas where you don’t know a lot to find mentors who do.
