This is a very nice interview. One thing that stands out to me when I think about the Fierce Five is something I read about at some point. At one point during the Olympics, McKayla Maroney texted Jordyn and Aly mentioning that Nassar was digitally penetrating her and she needed help. Jordyn and Aly stopped what they were doing and rushed to her side. The Fierce Five was so supportive of one another that they could do that for each other. I think that matters far more than even a team gold.

It was in the book Start By Believing on page 147. The story was corroborated by Jordyn for the book.

I miss seeing them compete in gymnastics or just doing gymnastics just for fun. Especially by how socially supportive they were for each other and other USA gymnasts. Kyla should work in acting in a movie or show.

I think the sport would be a lot safer for gymnasts if they needed to be 18 to compete at the Olympics. It would mean coaches, parents, gymnasts aren't forced to peak pre puberty. Their bodies will be stronger for longer if they delay peaking another couple of years. Gymnastics today is beginning to head that way, with "older" gymnasts (in their 20s) much more common, AND the gymnastics they do is far better to watch, BECAUSE their bodies ARE stronger

There also needs to be either more gymnasts on a team, more teams, and / or less pressure to "make the Olympics", from 11 or 12 years old - thats crazy. Very few if any other Olympic sport has such small odds of an athlete making a team!!!

I agree, it's a ton of pressure and would be great if more people got the chance to experience it. I sometimes wonder if the Olympics should be the pinnacle, honestly what's wrong with worlds being the ultimate goal? Olympics just means a person happened to be the right age, right body, right coach, whatever in a certain year. I was a figure skater and only between one and three women get to go to the Olympics. On one hand, it makes you fight so hard, on the other hand, it can definitely make you work through stuff you physically shouldn't and the mental health is brutal

Many individual sports have this pressure. There is typically only room for two or three athletes/pairs per country. There are sports in which how well the country does at the previous world championships for that sport determines how many spots they may have at the Olympics. Many other women's gymnastics countries did not even get to send a team of five. If they are unable to qualify a team, a country may be able to send one, two, or three athletes depending on a variety of factors. Examples: all track & field events, all swimming events, skateboarding, figure skating, speed skating both short and long track etc etc Some of the above named sports have similar age pressures as gymnastics, namely figure skating, skateboarding and also rhythmic gymnastics. Some RG countries are able to qualify a team of five as well as up to three individuals. As long as there are parents who are willing to allow their kids to live with this amount of pressure, things will not change. Of course, the vast majority of these parents believe what they are allowing is beneficial for their child. The Olympics have actually taken a huge step backwards because they decided to include the sport of skateboarding in 2020. They have athletes as young as 11 years old.
