José Eduardo dos Santos, Angola's second president who ruled for almost four decades, has died aged 79, the government has said.
He died in Spain where he was treated after suffering a cardiac arrest.
Dos Santos will be remembered for ending a long-running civil war in the early 2000s - his supporters dubbed him the "architect of peace".
But his legacy is soiled by high levels of corruption and human rights violations while he was in power.

Its an embarrassment to us Africans. Our leaders are dying in foreign hospitals because African leaders do not built "World class standard" hospitals in their countries. They are rather interested in enriching themselves. The same way our children study in their native countries at flop government schools..while their children are abroad at the best private schools and universities tax money can afford. They dont care about the education system ,health system or creating jobs for the youth because their relatives are living comfortable lives in Europe and America.Angola played the biggest role in the independence of Namibia and That we thank him for as Namibians and we will pass on that gratitude to our descendents..but Dos Santos like many African presidents sold his people out.Angola is suffering because of him.He died with billions in his accounts while Angola is in dire need of Investors. Our biggest hurdle in Africa is our leaders.During colonialism,"they went Into exile and fought for Africa as Pan africanists and when they returned..they returned as sell outs".

@Oldgrovela They are Heartless and do not fear God.But Africans across the continent are now awakened by this reality..We need to do better when choosing our leaders. We need to stop choosing wolves to guide our sheep"natural & national resources".

Some background: Studied in Soviet, joined a marxist-leninist party to rule Angola with an iron fist, later transferred the party from a marxist-leninist platform to a social democratic one, has been accused for rights violations and corruption, for enriching himself while the people were living on less than $2 per day. One of the longest serving leaders, fought against US/Western backed anti-communist forces until they were defeated. Angola is still to this day a very poor country.

Angola isn’t a very poor country my friend. You don’t know what you are talking about. That President did his best to achieve maximum goals but the people around him only cared about money. You can see that he didn’t have the half of money that his daughter had/has.

Angola isnt a very poor country. That’s a fantasy. If the 7th economy of the continent is a very poor country,it means Ghana is worst than Angola.

He studied in USSR, so what? Would he have been more credible if he was educated in UK, France or the US? Also, Angola has one of the highest economic growth rates and relatively high sociopolitical stability, unlike some former western puppet states on the continent!

Angola people should go after the family to get their stolen money back! He couldn’t build a standard good hospital in his home country , he was in power for nearly 40 years in power! He enriched his daughter to be a billionaire using Angola ‘s money 💰! Sad thing is they are going to use the country’s money to do a state grand funeral fir him , whiles millions of Angola people are wallowing in abject poverty

Ofc BBC would spread misinformation. Back in colonial times São Tomé was a plantation for Angolans. His parents were therefore still Angolans, because many generations of Angolans were in São Tomé. Angola has peace since 2002. Dos Santos ruled under corruption too, but aside of it, his legacy should be reminded as a strong and decisive leader for the faith of not only Angola but the entire Southern Africa. Dos Santos armed Namíbia who and defeated the apartheid Army, that ignited the end of white domination in Southern Africa. As to Isabel dos Santos, her demonization comes specially from the Portuguese who saw her as a threat because Angolan bankers under her orientation were taking over Portuguese banks, to this day Portugal owe us money, this is the silent part of the story that y’all won’t hear from BBC. Fck BBC. The Angola dos Santos received in 1979 and the Angola entering peace in 2002, with the Angola of 2017 that he left, are completely different. How come Angola, a country that was turned by 30 years of war, and has been at peace since 2002, is statistically comparable to so many African countries who have been at peace for more the 5 decades. HOW. If all dos Santos did was take, do you really think Angola would be the in the shape it is today? How the Fck is our economy greater than Ghana’s, and even Nigeria’s, or Kenya, in per Capita income, these countries have been at peace since their independence, with no comparable war, yet somehow, the terrible Dos Santos regime, who inherited a country already turned apart by war, and started fixing it since 2002, was horrendous. Give me a break.

Yet Angola has a higher poverty rate than Ghana, Kenya and Nigeria as a solid 40% of Angolans live in poverty. Nigeria may not have had comparable war, but it was ravaged by political instability.
