"Pep is truly a great man. For a striker, playing with him was truly a unique pleasure, because the way you moved he always knew how to pass the ball to you like few other players" (Roberto Baggio about Pep Guardiola)

As a Player, Guardiola is perfect prototype of "Complete Devensive Midfielder". Mixed of Xavi and Busquets. He could see invisible spaces in the cracks of the crowd, and plotted what would happen. His pass, vision, playmaking and intellegency is beauty and great. His profile as a great coach makes his abilities as a player greatly underrated.

What a player he must have been for his coaches. Doesn't do the flashy hollywood passes or dribbles, knows his strengths and weaknesses alike, has vision and can pass accurately. Spanish league back then seems like it was very open and not that physical, affording players a lot of space and time. Perhaps he was meant to excel in such environment, not sure if he would have survived todays' Premier League.

Because the game has changed. Sweeper keepers mean the space to run in behind is compressed. Look how passive the keepers are in these clips. That profile of player now largely operates as a wide forward, and centre forwards are usually more pivots than the Romario, Owen, R9 types of back then

Saludos

since pep was like the engine of the team that manages and organizes the games during his playing days, i really think being a defensive midfielder is a very good position to play in, in order to be a coach rather than a forward, although there are some forwards that do succeed as a coach.. i think defensive midfielders are best suited to be a coach as they organizes the team, control the game and also helps it defensively as well as starts the attacks... for instance, xabi alonso currently seems to be doing well as a coach, and i think sergio busquets also will make a really good coach out of all his great teammates if he is interested.
