Haydn - one of the truly great composers. Infectious joy, humour and emotioncombined with enormous intellectual and structural rigour.

As usual with FJ Haydn's music it is full of class and elegance. But this cellist has me floored. He is unreal...This is marvelous

I love how Isserlis infuses his music with such joy! It is such fun to watch the expressions on his face at the beginning of the cadenza! Listening to his playing makes my day! The chamber orchestra is such a beautiful complement, as well! Thank you!

Isserlis says he studies the whole score so that he knows what the other parts are. I wonder how many musicians do that? From listening to his interviews and master classes, I see that he has a profound understanding of the music he plays. And I absolutely love the look on his face at 8:03, at the being of the cadenza - he is so playful! One of my favourite all-time recordings!

As a cellist -- I've been playing since 1960 or thereabouts, and I'm old enough to remember the rediscovery of this long-lost concerto -- I wish to say that this performance strikes me as very possibly the best (of this work, I mean) that I've ever encountered. Given the superb quality of his playing, I can even ignore the fact that Steven Isserlis looks like Harpo Marx's long-lost twin brother!

Isserlis is a marvelous cellist and has clearly thought out what he wants to do in great detail, but IMHO somehow his interpretation also strikes me as a bit mannered and precious. Even though it might seem irrelevant here to many, I do wish however that the UK's finest artists would also speak out about matters of political conscience- e.g., the British judicial system's corruption and its torture of Julian Assange. After all, if music is to aspire to our deepest humanity, then can we be true to ourselves if we remain silent about the abrogation of that humanity and the rights that attach thereto?

To be entirely honest, I foudn his facial expressions SUPER annoying. But once I stopped watching the video I was able to hear just how amazing his sound is on this concerto. His performance is especially impressive, since unlike some concertos skill on the instrument isn't enough to put together a convincing performance of this concerto; some tremendously talented cellists have totally butchered this piece, but not Isserlis.
