At the 2016 Olympic Games, in Rio de Janeiro, Singaporean swimmer Joseph Schooling won a gold medal in the 100 m butterfly with a time of 50.39 seconds, the first Olympic gold medal won by Singapore. Schooling did not only manage to beat Michael Phelps in the final, but his incredible time set a new Olympic record, beating Michael Phelps' record of 50.58 seconds at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

If based on the current ranking on Fina website, it will be : Dressel, Milak, Mathew Temple of Australia, in that order.

Good showing at Rio in 2016. We are all proud of him as Singapoeans. However Jo has not been swimming well recently, in fact he has been going downhill since 2016. He may not medal in Japan (if there is an Olympic in 2021). 50.39 (2016 Olympic Record), 50.83 (2017 World Championship), 51.04 (2018 Asian Games Record), 51.84 (2019 SEA Games Gold Medal, hit Olympic A Standard thanks to Quah Zheng Wen), 52.93 (2021 TYR Pro Swim Series Indianapolis 100m B Final). Don't know whether this has something to do with him "dropping" 200m Fly after 2016. Hopefully his recent bad timing is just part of his strategy. All the best to Joseph Schooling.

Its not about winning, losing or whos greatest. Of course phelps has an unmatched achievement than anyone else (28 Medals) in olympic history. But whats interesting is schooling got into high profile swimming after meeting phelps as a kid in singapore and getting inspired by him. And little did phelps or anyone knew that this kid will grow on to beat him, the fastest swimmer ever in his last olympic. That's the beauty of life.

Although he lost the event, Micheal Phelps is still considered the greatest swimmer, having achieved the most gold medals in the Olympic. Remember,100m butterfly is his weakest event. The loss does not take away his achievement of being the greatest swimmers. For example,in tennis, Djokovic, Nadal and Federer sometimes still loses to lesser known guy. In fact every lesser known aims to beat the legend only once and they will be satisfied with that .

He trained in the U.S. since age 13 and later in college with the U of Texas Longhorns. Phelps had already broken the world record of 50.22 in 2009 but that doesn't diminish Schooling's Olympic record (until Dressel this year). What's pretty amazing is how the times have gone down since Rio - Schooling clocked a time of 49.84 and was sixth in his heat at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. His time placed him 39th overall out of 70 so failed to qualify for the semi-finals.

Why can't some people just be supportive of other people's achievement? Why must people constantly bash each other just because your favourite athlete did not compete or win? This is a rare occasion for Schooling to win so give it to him. It's a competition no doubt but you don't have to be toxic about it; give credit to people where its due. It's sickening to see what some commenters below me have to say about an achievement that they probably will never attain in their lives. Pathetic.

His semi final timing was better than the finals itself. Had Phelps got sufficient rest before this event, Joseph would had to settle for silver.

The speed is much faster this year. It is hard for a Singaporean to be a full time sportsman as the money coming in is much lesser than other country sportsman as Singapore market is so small.

yep, humble Dressel crushed proud Schooling, gotta love it! Caeleb beat this dude in all NCAA races, set the record in from of Joe, and then nailed it again in world champs (2017), 2 yrs later in 2019, Joe didn't even make the final! WR set by Dressel with a 49.50

One hit wonder. He's now a shadow of his former self. Dressel has also taken away his Olympic record, at the same time setting a new WR that is lightyears away from JS's PB. Schooling will never come back. Tokyo 2020 has laid the final nail in his coffin.
