Joseph talks through what to do after you have a bad ride on your horse and how to leverage it to become a better rider and be more fair to your horse. These are some ideas to help you think about the horsemanship.

I like the straight from the heart conversation.

Hi Joseph! I’m loving the rambling nature of your talks especially when you segue off to something and then circle back to the topic

Nice timing with this video Joe, just came off a bad ride on the weekend and this was such a nice refresher to come back at it with a compassionate perspective for the next one. Re. format, I think maybe take some jot notes? You're pretty darn good at following your own outline honestly, and I think if it went too much more structured it wouldn't seem as genuine, you're right. I think your last point is the one for me today - I tend to "suffer" through the trot warm up, and if I just went ahead to canter sooner it would make my ride SO MUCH MORE ENJOYABLE because for my horse canter is a lot easier to digest, and then we can go back to the trot later in the ride. I keep forgetting this, because we learn growing up that your warm up is walk, trot, canter, and so it can be really hard to break out of the habit (and also feels weird to not do a lot of trot in the beginning, like you're "breaking the rules"!).

You have to have bad rides so you know when you have a good one

That’s so true. I had a great ride on Sunday. Great transitions, felt really connected and I was so happy with my ride. Today’s ride was not as great. The transitions were harder, he was distracted and overall it wasn’t great. I used to get quite down on myself after a bad ride but I feel like I’m in a better place now and I focus on what has gone well. You can generally still find some good in a bad ride.

Good conversation and tips for moving forward. As an older rider though what astounds me is younger riders dependence on videos when all the difficulties in training horses have been discussed for 2000 years by the great masters in their books. I like watching videos too however for a real grounding you can't go past Xenophon, Newcastle, Gueriniere and the present day masters like Belasik and Podhajsky.
