In this video, see how Jim Harbaugh and Offensive Coordinator Josh Gattis broke through against the stout defense with the Wisconsin Badger defense run by Jim Leonhard for Paul Chryst. We'll see how Wisconsin used their base 3-4 defense with a lot of single-high coverages, bringing an extra Safety into the box to take away the run. Then, we'll see how Michigan toiled away schematically, trying to generate yards wherever they could before turning to a Flea Flicker and an overwhelming downfield passing attack with QB's Cade McNamara and J.J. McCarthy throwing bombs to Roman Wilson, Daylen Baldwin, and Cornelius Johnson. After this season, Gattis became the Offensive Coordinator of the Miami football team.

You should look at what ole miss did to my hogs yesterday. Lane kiffen made his money yesterday. They came out and ran the same formation and had it schemed up so well our defense had no idea where the play was going until a good 5 seconds after the snap. They would change their keys and them change them back, change their fits and change them back. It was wild. The UGA game was an anomaly, that uga offensive line just hulk smashed our 326 until we lost our legs. I doubt another team could do that as effectively. But ole miss just added layer after layer after layer to the same formation until our defense was thinking instead of playing. Hats off to kiffen

That game’s definitely on my radar. It might be a week delayed, but I think it’s definitely time for an Ole Miss breakdown!

You discussed Michigan's use of tight ends several times in this video. How do you compare their use of tight ends with Stanford's use of tight ends when Harbaugh was there?

The Stanford offenses wanted to by hyper-compressed, so you'd often see even 2-back, 3 TE stuff where all 11 guys were in the core of the formation. Since there are only so many defenders who can play at the 1st level, this forces the defense to choose which gaps will be covered by down-linemen, and then the offense can attack open gaps, especially off-tackle, with plays like Power. The other benefit is that, when all offensive players are in the core of the formation, all defenders are needed to cover the created gaps, and so you can force non-traditional run defenders (like CB's) to defend the run. This was how, especially early in Harbaugh's time there, Stanford was able to create a lot of favorable matchups using numbers and angles even when they hadn't built up a lot of talent. You can see pieces of this in the Tight Bunch set that I talked about, where they used a TE to double-up on a DL and forced a CB to tackle in the hole. On the whole, though, at Michigan they're lining up in a lot more spread stuff and using a lot of motion to disguise where the extra blockers will be coming from. When they do motion those guys in, they're often functioning more like Stanford's FB's, because they're in the backfield and so have more ability to insert at different points in the blocking scheme. So, let's of trapping and leading rather than simply creating extra gaps on the edge and blocking DE's heads-up.
