The two common ways of dealing with war, is thinking deeply about it, often thinking as logically and rationally as possible, as thinking deeply about killing someone will cause depression, and you see those effects in Lonnie. And the other is to not think about it. To switch off your emotions completely, and make it a game. Some people can cope with thinking deeply about what you are doing. Others think about it deeply, but struggle with the emotions involved, which can cause depression, regret, anguish etc. And other can't cope in any way with thinking deeply about it, so they don't think. They just do. Once can argue morality, which one is the better soldier, does either pose a danger upon reentering society, but that fact remains that both are extremely common ways of coping with warfare, and anyone who has spent a second looking at war will notice to large subsets of character emerge; the deep, philosophical, pondering soldier. And the balls to the wall, this is awesome soldier. You can find cases of both of those dating back prior to WW1, and in all the wars since.

They will tell you how awful it was, they will cry, they will say "War is hell", but they will tell you too that as much as they hated it, they liked it too. People don't want to hear that though. Crack Cocaine offers you the most incredible god damn feeling you can imagine. Killing people in War offers you the most incredible fucking rush you can imagine. Imagine doing it for months, imagine how fucked you would be emotionally. How can you go back to your normal life? How can you go back to your normal life knowing that nothing you will ever do for the rest of your life will ever be even a fraction as intense, or meaningful as those days in combat were? Most americans live in a bubble of luxury and have no idea how the real world is and how in many places it is a kill or be killed dog eat dog reality and how true evil truly exists out there. At the same time, just telling a story to someone without them walking in your shoes will always leave something out of the story and their life experiences and world view will clash with someone who has been through war. I can respect your point on this. As a child, I grew up with many WW2, Korean War and Vietnam War vets. They had some wild stories. Some of the WW2 vets had “souvenirs” (as one called them) they brought back. We used to play with a German infantry helmet with a bullet hole in it as well as a bayonet-when we were 5-6 years old. We never questioned it. When we were old enough to put two and two together, we asked about it. They were more than willing to tell and I was always wanting to hear their stories, even when I was probably too young to hear them. I appreciated them and their stories-not just because they were interesting, but because of the perspective it gave me on how good I had/have it here compared to the rest of the world. They didn’t kill because they wanted to. They did it to survive and live another day; so their fellow soldiers could survive and live another day. It was for the greater good of our country and the rest of the world. Josh is right-it’s very primal-very base instincts. Kill or be killed.

He seems like a guy who had a very limited experience of the war, but likes to use the stories to glorify himself. I know vets from Vietnam and had family that fought in the Finnish Winter War & Continuation War, and none of them talked about the war like this guy. I knew a couple of guys like him, from my time in the marines, but even they weren't as obnoxious. Riding in a HMMWV, with top tier tech (compared to the enemy) and armor, shooting grenades at people, is a different experience from the horrors the old timers had to go through. This guy talks casually about how cool it is to kill people with missiles and how rad it is to see guts. Probably not that rad when it's your friend's or a child's guts. Disgusting, ignorant, childish, indifferent, disrespectful, self-centered, brainwashed, adrenaline junkie... I think many descriptions could possibly suit him.

Baychimo you need to know that they have been taught by their instructors/commanders that those people who they are fighting are savages and have no remorse for their enemies. The purpose for military training is to get you ready physically and mentally for war, they will make you a killing machine and he is an example. Also, there are some who aren’t like him that is in the military, but you can’t judge him for not feeling guilty about the people he killed, the enemies they’re fighting are no different. He is the type of soldier the military wanted.

_Hayf_ Like I said, I was/am a marine and I've talked to guys who experienced war back in the days. You don't lose your ability to think because of the training, you get better at it. Especially when you are a sniper. You get stress tested, you get taught how to handle weapons, you get "programmed" to react to orders immediately, since your life depends on it etc etc. You're thinking of some hollywood depiction of boot camp and war. I don't judge him for not wanting to die, but for glorifying the killings he has done. He sounded more like someone who has watched one too many american war movies, than a soldier who fought for his life and others "freedom".

I don't really have much to say on the matter from experience or through conversation with others. I've never been a soldier, and I've never killed anyone. Anything I have to say is pure speculation. However, there is a difference in accepting the responsibility to do what must be done and taking pleasure in it. The guy in the video expressed that he took pleasure in the act or at the very least found some entertainment value in it. It's very hard for civilians to understand how one takes pleasure or finds pleasure in the killing of other human beings regardless of their intent. To be fair, we haven't been there, and moreover, we have never gone through the training necessary to survive it. The most striking thing is not that he took pleasure. The most striking thing is that he relives that excitement inside his mind and compares everything else to those moments. Those were not good things. Firing an RPG into a man and watching his flesh be violently torn asunder is not good. Feeling no compassion toward humanity is not good. It is not good to love and to crave the feeling of performing such an act, though it may be necessary for the purposes of warfare. Those are not the things by which to base your standard of what is good. Therefore, those are not the things by which all other pursuits of life outside of war should be judged. There may be an argument to suggest a soldier might need to be trained in such a way--to gain pleasure; to find entertainment. In some respects, I think there is a strong argument to be made that such training is necessary. We might even sympathize with it on a theoretical level. But there is also an argument to suggest that there needs to be a serious debriefing process for these guys so that they might transition back into civilian life. We need them to function properly when they come back home. They are our brothers, our fathers, our husbands, our friends. We love them. Regardless of what they did in war--we love them. We need them. The problem is not that society cannot transition to meet their needs. The problem is that they cannot transition properly to meet society's needs. That mentality is necessary in war time. It is not necessary in civilian life. And I say that fully understanding that I have no right to place further expectation onto these guys. But there's no other way. It is a heavy burden. I think there's room to assume that therein lies the issues with a soldier's PTSD. There's no real effective means to bring a lot of these guys back. But, I also think it's important for someone like this guy to be the voice which helps to bring them back. A civilian cannot do it. It has to come from the voice of experience. But reliving the glory of the most heinous deeds committed in war, I think, is not the way to do it. It might be a step in the process, but it is most definitely not the place to stay. Staying there is the problem. How do we bring them back?
