I don't know if he was really talking specifically about getting great tone on cheap gear but instead just something a lot more general. He is encouraging players to really value what they have (regardless of price) and I honestly think that is far, far better than turning it into "cheap versus expensive" like so many other click-bait chasing guitar KZfaqrs tend to. JHS doesn't exactly make cheap stuff and it is obvious that Josh Scott isn't exactly attached to any particular price point on some ideological level. In my opinion, that is the way to be. When you start getting too attached to the notion of only getting "cheap" or "expensive" gear, you start losing sight of the bigger picture.

People will watch a video about old-timey or alternative medicine, laugh and say to themselves "how could they be so superstitious and naive?" and then go and wax poetic about tonewood and overpriced pedals on their guitar forums. Electrical equipment is difficult. I'm qualified to work as an electrician in my country (not by myself, you need two years work experience), and I still occasionally feel like I don't understand how electronics work. And when especially untrained people don't understand how things work, they tend towards superstition and they seek patterns because that's how our brains work. People think they're immune to this, but none of us are completely. The thing that's really ridiculous is what people tend towards in their superstitious thinking. You'd think people would get obsessed with pickups, amps, cab size and type, speakers, guitar electronics, EQ - but it's almost as if the less impactful something is, the more people obsess over it.

EQ is such an important part of the sound, if you feel frustrated with your current drive/fuzz pedals: Get a simple Boss GE-7. It's cheap, it works well and it allows you to sculpt your sound. It can also boost which is great if you feed it into a distortion. Try it, you won't regret it. All the best!

@@prinzbach It probably has to do with extensive touring. You need to be able to find a replacement in any city. Thus, lot's of Boss-pedals. On the ODB-3: Yeah up until very recently anyway. All my pedals are cronk, clones, doy or battered used that I've repaired /repurposed. It can take a whole to tune them in. Here's the thing. I've used some of those big multi knob top o the range verbs etc. try dialling in some of them. It'll take you till next week to get a useable sound that's right there in an RV6. 15 years ago I was really into overdrive pedals and had about 10 different ones...many of them boutique. I quickly came to the realization that there wasn't THAT much difference in all of them simply because what they do is PUSH a tube amp into overdrive. The AMP and GUITAR play a big part in the overall sound. I ended up selling a lot of my expensive boutique pedals as a result. I had a $200 Keeley modded Tube Screamer at the time and the Bad Monkey sounded the same while also having more EQ versatility because it had bass and treble...so I sold the Keeley. For what it's worth, some other overdrive pedals I like a lot that I kept after my decades long quest are: The Radial Tonebone Classic, The BadCat 2-Tone, The Snouse Bluesbreaker clone, and The Digitech Screamin' Blues. There are lots of great pedals out there for overdrive. Find one that works well with your guitar, amp and playing style and don't buy into the hype that any one pedal is "magic" None are better...if anything they might sound slightly different and/or have more tone shaping capability. BTW the overdrive you get by simply cranking your tube amp without using a pedal at all can be nice as well.

The truth is, a large majority of people only need Tone City and Behringer in terms of pedal quality, but people tend to judge sound with their eyes. So, naturally, when they're told that a pedal is cheap and made of plastic, they automatically assume the sound isn't good.

Hello, Josh! I'd like to thank you and everyone of your team responsible for the content of your channel. I have lots of fun watching your videos. Here in Brazil it's not that easy to have access to the most legendary boutique pedals. When they miraculously appear over here, they have insane prices, making it very difficult to know how they sound compared to other pedals. Thank you so much for making it possible and fun through your videos. I hope someday in the near future we have JHS pedals over here. Cheers from the middle of the rainforest.

Josh, what you said about “Group Thinking/Thought” is so true. My favorite fuzz pedal is what some consider the “worst fuzz ever”, the DOD FX66 Flashback Fuzz. I’ve now owned 3 in my lifetime because there’s just something about that tone I get from it that I love! Recently I paired it with an Earthquaker Devices Tentacle (placed before the FX66), and it’s such an awesome sound!

@@TheRealcdawg22 [Spaghetti Western music plays] It’s been a hard life on the run from the Tone Police. Always dodging their tone checkpoints, shooting them down with my trusty FX66 and my Fender Mustang GTX 100. And every time I think I’m in the clear, someone stops me and says “That’s the worst fuzz ever” or “Tubes are better than digital”. But everyone is entitled to their own wrong opinion, including myself. So I grab my Epiphone Crestwood Custom, and show ‘em how us mad scientist musicians do it.

Hey Josh! I'm humbled you actually watched and stopped to talk about my thumbnail, that rules! Also to anyone here before you go commenting on my video saying he "talked crap about me", do watch the video, I actually talked about the JHS Channel and how much of a fan I am and how the shootouts are awesome and that I bought a silver horse pedal because of these. Also that the whole point of Josh's video (like most of them) is to show you that you can achieve great tones with what you have, You don't need a $5k klon to sound good. And I appreciate him for that. Thanks JHS for everything you all do, you rule.

This makes me think of one of my favorite synth shows, Bad Gear. He reviewed synths that a sufficient number of people don't like. I see that show as Buy Gear. There is so much cool stuff out there that people dismiss. Don't worry about having bad gear. If you like the sound and enjoy making music; that's what matters. I go out of my way to buy crappy gear because it's interesting and different. When I go to the thrift shop I always stop by the toy section to look at baby toys. Some of those make cool sounds that I can use in my music. Crappy isn't a bad thing if it's the good kind of crappy. Lately I have been playing around with a micro cassette recorder for a Lo-Fi vibe. I am getting some great results. So don't worry about what social media tell you is good. Use your ears and brain. If like it; that's what matters.

Your mea culpa was unnecessary, but it shows your integrity. You have now taken enough heat, so carry on the great work. Hope you have a great Easter weekend. (BTW, why is it that I only today received a KZfaq notice of this episode when you reference “something special on Tuesday“ then say you shot this video on 15 March? Were you referring to the bad monkey video? Or the video we just watched?) God bless you - that is from the King James version, as well as the new international version.😊. Hope you get well soon and do try not to employ the antihistamines/decongestants too much.
