This is an very important interview. JW has always "gotten it" no matter how big he's become in the DJ scene. His narratives provide the context as why we got into it back in the day, and what also calls us to the mix every minute. It's not about the glamour, nor the materialism, but rather the tangible experience, the creative discovery and release, and the importance to inform, then watching it unfold in front of an intimate group or upon the largest crowd that gathers for your show. Those who know....understand its the drive to bring the most innovative artists and boundary-pushing music, who seldom get the airplay, into the light for the masses to enjoy, allowing the masses to release from the daily grind. You know what I LOVE about Wink? He's Drug Free! Always has been!! A true lover of the sound/culture/scene without needing to succumb to the predisposition of what it means to be part of Dance Music as a whole. He's an idol!!!

In 1996, cousins from Germany visited us in Canada and one brought along a cassette filled with music. 'Don't Laugh' was an instant favourite that was stuck in my head for YEARS until i found it again here on youtube. I was only 9, it was probably the first techno song i ever heard.

Saw him some 20 years ago at Fever in Baltimore MD! He had long dreadlocks and was dropping bombs like "I Am Ready" and "Are You There" Those were the days! Listen to those tracks and then try to tell me the man wasn't ahead of his time!

So true !!! These days in Ibiza build up 30 sec and drop build up and drop and on and on. There is no story behind the DJ sets anymore. It’s all about the money this specially applies to Ibiza’s last few seasons.

Seeing people like Josh Wink still around, Kraftwerk, even Yello in their 70s now. So amazing. And it just goes to show that they truly enjoyed and still enjoy that :)

@@obbekjaer I was in the late 90s and early 2000s club hopping with my buddies but this played every weekend at the Lizard Lounge in Dallas TX. This mixed with Magic Orgazm and you had 15 minutes or so of non-stop people dancing even in the bathrooms.

Ha, I was thinking what a relevant point he was making until you mentioned that. Awesome track however it pretty much kick started the suspense and release aspect of dance music. Don't forget his track 'Size 9 - I Am Ready' as well. I think that was about 50% snare roll!

He refers mostly to the EDM movement that is based mostly on "the drop" and "build up" , songs that are 4-5 minutes long that lacks musical tension, momentum...

it didn't have the same peripherals of success attached to it as it does today - at least in terms of the "big names". There's still a thriving underground scene, but a couple hours on /r/edmproduction shows you how far the goals have shifted. The music is more instrumental; not in terms of using instruments but in terms of seeking a defined goal, as opposed to people playing music for music's sake - an intrinsic Good.

it was cool until the early 90's NOT the late 90's (20 years ago). When all the commercial club shit happened-sponsored by red bull, smirnoff etc etc - bullshit. The raves was where it was at and it was the crowd that was cool, not the dj's.
