I always find it ironic that the BBC put Doctor Who on (coughs bullshit) hiatus yet during the 90s and early 2000s you either had new versions on new mediums OR talk of a film or new show. And that's before to include Big Finish. Doctor Who wasn't dead... it was merely having renewal problems... PUT SIMPLY BOTH the TV audience AND TV land missed Doctor Who. 2003 Michael Grade put Doctor Who in room 101 and said he hated it ect Two years later he had to eat humble pie. NOW THAT WAS FUN. Curious though that it waas women who were the ones who had fond memories or at least saw a show that had way more potential. Which is odd when you hear feminiists claim it's sexist? RTD proved that with the right creative vision and a lot of RESPECT for the original - ANYTHING can be made a success. SOMETIME IN 2005 Daleks are throwing popcorn at the TV as the Doctor comes back

Micheal Grade: 1985 Got Doctor Who put on hiatus and slowly helped kill it. 2005 The same man trries to sabotage Doctor Who and get it cancelled. Isn't this man meant to be a professional? He acted like he had a personal vandetta against the show? Fitting that 20 years later Doctor Who turned the tables on him and made HIM look like the out of date joke who was living in the past. Doctor Who and all those wonderful people who BELIEVED in it were the new blood moving things forward. Not living in the past and trying to ruin everybody's joy in the present.

"try not to over complicate it." When it comes to Doctor Who, that is The understatement of the century. I remember in 1996 videotaping the TV Movie and thinking, "This isn't too bad, but why did they have to make it so American?" I live in the USA, and for quite a large number of us, the 'Britishness' of Doctor Who is why we like it so much. Great job Josh, another triumph!

As one of the cast members in "SURVIVAL", (I played one of the "Defence Lads") and a fan of Dr Who since the 1960's I really enjoyed this, working with Sylvester McCoy, Sophie Aldred, Julian Holloway, Antony Ainley, Will Barton, Lisa Bowerman, & Sakntala Ramanee, and other cast members was great fun, the entire cast & crew on the location shoots were lovely, I have vivid and fond memories of filming the scenes in the Hall and on Horsendon Hill, and although I have worked on so many productions and with an amazing list of big stars in TV & Film, it remains one of my personal all time favorite Acting jobs from the many years I spent in the industry, growing up watching the show I never thought that one day I would get to be a part of Dr Who History, I would like to say a massive thank you to all the fans of the Series, for your love & support of the show, and thanks to Josh Snares for this Documentary, I have a few nostalgic videos looking at fellow Stage School Friends, Stars I got to work with, and some of the many productions i worked on, like Grange Hill, etc, on my channel, if anyone that see this is interested in looking at them.

JN-T biographer Richard Marson wanted to make it clear that Doctor Who was cancelled in 1985. What changed the cancellation to a 18 month hiatus was fear of negative publicity over fans protesting the government. Marson is very clear about this in the biography and in an interview he did on Radio Free Skaro.

Doctor who was facing the dark age period during the eras of the sixth and seventh doctors. The television networks at the time started to focus on doing soap dramas and reality TV shows. That's how it lead into the BBC pulling the plug on the show for 16 years.

I continue to feel that fandom in the late 1980s (and I was in the Appreciation Society at the time) made a rod for its own back by conflating its love for the show with the public's view of it. My sense was that, from about 'The Five Doctors' onwards, it started to become a much harder sell. The kids I knew wanted the big budget American shows, the action movies. I remember talking to a not-really friend, Alex Tuplin, and he said something like 'I've got nothing against it, but-' and that was the best reaction I got. By the time of the TV Movie the culture had moved on a bit, into post-modernism, so it felt like you could go back and revisit these things.

The only time I remember a new companion having a 'profile' on the series that led to heightened publicity before 2005 was when Bonnie Langford was brought on board. And that was inevitably coloured by her association with song and dance and a rather well known clip of her that probably doesn't bear repeating today. Billie Piper felt like the most absurd pick, because the one thing the show had not been for the bulk of my life was 'cool'. And in that it must be remembered that words like 'Cool' had stopped being 'cool' for part of that time also! If you started waxing lyrical about the latest series, it was like that scene in the original Superman movie where Clark Kent gets a dressing down for using the word 'swell'.

As much as encyclopedic knowledge, in depth research and all the rest are essential, your videos have one thing a lot of people seem to forget in their fan-channel presentation - a sense of fun that carries it all along. Your videos are never dry, which implies that you make "moist" videos and well, that's a whole other thing entirely... The whole history of Doctor Who is littered with comedy, tragedy, lunacy, irony... and affectionately 'taking the piss' out of the BBC / Doctor Who is part and parcel of enjoying it to the fullest. Well done, Tiger! Keep it up - the good work that is, up... Err, taxi???

Just an added point, in 2005, most of the UK still hadn't adopted HD yet and the vast majority of the population still had SD TV's. Given Doctor Who is a British production, it stands to reason that they would go with SD over HD as most of the home market for the show wouldn't be able to watch it in HD anyway.
@occono3543
@occono3543 Жыл бұрын
It doesn't really make sense why they couldn't film in HD and do the effects in SD though. That's completely possible and would save them regret later.
@supersonicsjm
@supersonicsjm Жыл бұрын
@@occono3543 it was an added expense that the BBC would have needed to fund. Remember, the BBC operates on license payer money, not advertising revenue, so their budget is more limited than more commercial channels. If most people didn't have HD at the time in their home market, there's no point paying for it yet as there would be little to no benefit. I don't even think BBC even had HD broadcasting available as of 2005. It's short sighted in retrospect, but sadly that's the way the cookie crumbles.
@occono3543
@occono3543 Жыл бұрын
@@supersonicsjm Were HD cameras really that much more expensive in 2005? Broadcasting/streaming may have been but there's lots of shows from that era on Bluray. Torchwood was filmed in HD from the start.
@supersonicsjm
@supersonicsjm Жыл бұрын
@@occono3543 Torchwood started a couple of years later, so it allowed time for the BBC to invest in HD. Doctor Who started in filming in 2004 and BBC didn't start using HD until 2006. So yes, Torchwood would have been HD because that's around the time the BBC started investing in it. Doctor Who however, was before that. It also took time for the BBC to move its programming over to HD, so not everything moved straight over to HD once they actually started using it.

I guess it never got out that Douglas Adams was approached to do a treatment for the late 90's film project, which came about from a chance meeting on a plane. Douglas was keen to have Tom Baker to come back in the role. However, seeing as Douglas never managed to even complete a script for his own Hitchhikers film, the chances of him actually finishing the Dr Who script were pretty low.

Thanks so much for such a thoughtful and passionate presentation. Been watching The Doctor since Tom Baker and you've captured the mirth and irreverence very well.
