Park Junkie

Күн бұрын

This Park Junkie Flashback takes us to Joshua Tree National Park in February of 2021, for a climb up the park’s iconic Queen Mountain.
There is no trail on Queen, & the route is not that easy to follow, but shouldn't be difficult for seasoned mountaineers. The scrambling required to summit the peak never reaches the 5th class category, and if it does, one should be aware that they are definitely not on the route shown here.
Joshua Tree is a park best visited in the winter months, in my desert-rat opinion. Temperatures are nice, and weather systems lend the area an incredibly hospitable climate for these months.
If you're considering a visit to J-Tree, check out the Park Junkie Joshua Tree Guide:

Boy Scout? Or Keys Ranch? Boy Scout runs north, out of the park. Did that one too. It's cool, but I enjoyed this mountain hike more than any of the trails.

I like to watch you do these summit hikes since I can't do to many of those myself these days. It's funny because I just went through my JT pictures this weekend. We had snow and wildflowers in 2019.

Getting back to your backcountry permit story- a couple times I camped in state park campgrounds, arriving without a reservation. Both times I had to pay a "reservation fee", even though I did not make a reservation. They said it is required for all campsites, regardless of length of stay. I recall it being around 16-18 dollars each time. Ridiculous
@theparkjunkie
@theparkjunkie Жыл бұрын
Yep, & that likely goes to Rec.gov, but some state campgrounds use Reserve America. Same thing, just different. It’s all a scam. We’ll get into this on the next news feed.

One of the most fun hikes in JT, especially in the Spring when everything is blooming. Definitely not the trail to meander too far off unless one likes that kind of pain.

This should be fun. Last time I was there I think I was 13yrs old at the time. And for some silly reason my dad only visited in summer. LOL At least it's better Temps there now. Thanks Todd! Glad you are still filming despite the stupid ruling. I enjoy watching you and "hiking with you" vicariously. I just turned 70 on 12-05 this year. If I was 30 years younger...lol. I am an old, old desert rat!

@@theparkjunkie Yeah my dad loved the heat. I remember driving from LA to visit family back in 1960 to Maine. We did not have A/C in the Chevy station wagon at the time. So imagine driving through the California desert to Needles in the daylight in August. Then through Arizona and New Mexico, up through Amarillo and on to Oklahoma City. All the side windows were open and we had a huge bag of ice on the floor infront and my mom would give us mugs of ice to suck on. Now add on, we'd leave our house on Friday at around noon, and my dad would drive all day and all night and all the next day until we stopped for a motel room, at Oklahoma City!And remember, I-40 was still being built, so most of time we were on two-lane only highway! Good old Route 66. I was only 8yrs old at the time and I still remember those long trips every summer. (My Dad had A/C put in the next year. Thank gaud!) So yeah, he loved the heat.

Hi Park Junkie did you need a permit to film in Joshua tree? Do you need a permit to film in national parks even if you don't make money on youtube?
@theparkjunkie
@theparkjunkie Жыл бұрын
At the time of this film, no I did not need a permit. Now, a permit is required. There is legislation moving through the Senate which seeks to change that, stay tuned, as I have an update on this issue coming very very soon.

Wow, you sure had a beautiful day for that hike! I've been to JT many times--my first visit was a camping trip over New Year's when it was cold enough overnight to freeze our water bottles. (I foolishly thought it would be warm in "the desert" in the winter--little did I know!) I always put a Gram Parsons CD when I'm driving through the park. Until next time, happy trails!

I used to assume it was warm in the desert too… A couple of cold nights in my early 20s told me differently. 😬
