Even the older Stever Perry can't compare to the prime Steve Perry. I love SP for sure, but Rick Beato rightly points out that that genre of music will ruin the voice with that kind of schedule Journey was keeping. It isn't anyone's fault it is just the nature of that music.

‘Mother, Father’ is known to have one of the hardest vocals in music PERIOD. The fact that Steve ‘Nailed it’ in one take is unbelievable! And shows his artistic dedication and mastery in using his vocals as an art form. Many people when they first heard the song, didn’t realize that the instrument in parts of the song was actually his VOICE! Great critique and admiration of the best of the best.

I talked with Gregg Rollie briefly after a gig in Hillsboro OR and he told me that indeed the Journey band during the recording of Captured was the hottest band around. My own commentary: it was as if he regretted leaving the band right before Escape. I have to give credit to the songwriting team of Cain Perry and Schon for making it even more epic. The chemistry for the next three albums is undeniable.

When I think back about my teen years Journey is the background to every great memory. I felt that Journey didn't get the respect they deserved in the past and I'm so glad that the world seems to have come around to the true greatness that is Journey. The best live shows ever- Steve Perry somehow sounded better live. Neil Schon smoked the guitar and the energy of the band lifted stadium packed crowds. Professor, considering the actual length of prime activity of the band with Steve Perry as the lead vocalist, Journey's success in the music world is truly phenomenal and its longevity truly remarkable. Without counting the band's practical hiatus and the brief final comeback in 1996, the actual number of years for the band's peak was less than a decade. Can you imagine what kind of monstrous band it would've become had they stayed together another 5 to 10 years and recorded 3 to 4 more studio albums and toured for them? I have very little doubt that they would have become as big or bigger than the likes of The Stones or Zeppelin.
@debbieminton9589

wow 😯 ... yes, can you just imagine that 🤔 ?? ... that's mind-blowing !! ... they really MIGHT have become bigger than Zeppelin or the Stones with Steve's powerful vocals 🎤 and with Neal's blistering guitar 🎸 solos ... but alas, it was just not meant to be 😕 ...... I'm so thrilled 💜 that Steve Perry has finally come back to us in the last 3 years, once again sharing his amazing Voice and his superb song 🎶 writing/producing talents, and his promise of more new music 🎶 to still come !!! ... he's still successful in his career and seems to have found such happiness 🙂🙂 and peace with life on his own terms ... so, now with Arnel as their lead singer, Journey will continue Steve's legacy, and maybe they will also still have a few more big hits hidden in their arsenal ... I've heard new songs 🎶 from them are also to be released sometime soon ... good things to come from both fronts !!! 💜💜💜🎶🎤🎶💜💜💜

@@debbieminton9589 Yes, the endurance of Journey's popularity is remarkable. But it's not surprising because the fans never could get enough of the music from the band even when they were struggling internally in the 80s. I think the combination and chemistry they had together were simply magical and timeless. While I don't think they'll exactly relive their heyday, I'm sure they will keep the legacy alive for some years to come.

The stories behind the songs is fascinating. Why is Journey the greatest band of all time? Each member is a talented musician and vocalist. Sadly, bands and singers, like Journey, don’t exist today. Steve Perry’s vocal range is unbelievable and splendid! It’s no surprise they only needed one take in the studio….no sweeteners needed. In closing, their songs are meaningful: Memories come flooding back reminding you of that period in life when each song was released.

I’ve been heard it said that some consider “Raised On Radio” to be Steve’s “unofficial” 2nd solo album, as he was calling so many of the shots. Bringing on a new Bassist & Drummer that could give him more of an R&B feel and such. Can’t say they’re wrong, it was a bit of a departure (pun intended) from “Escape” & “Frontiers”. It will always be my favorite album as it’s the first Journey album that I dove into head first for the first time. I was certain aware of the other hit songs, especially “Faithfully”, but that album was the first one I’d sit and listen to from beginning to end…then do it again….and again.

Through the years I have grown to admire and appreciate the band Journey. With all the changes Neal has been the rock to which the band stays strong. Music talent along the way made the band iconic. The one and only “The Voice” need I say more. To add Jonathan Cain addition was like getting a power hitting catcher who does just about everything. Each change gave the band a different tone but the core has always been Neal. Awesome job on this video. I’m looking forward to seeing them live.

"Separate Ways" haunts me to this day. I first heard it/watched on MTV just a day or two after seeing my first "girlfriend" (never a committed thing, but we had a close friendship) for the first time in over a year in '83. The song just made me say, "Yes, we did, "touch and went our separate ways". We still have a great friendship all these years later. Yet, the song takes me back to Summer '83 and the "*gasp* Look who's here!" moment. Love that song. Great video Prof! Hard to pick a 'bad' Journey song...

Journey will always have a special place in my heart. When I was a teenager in the mid-2000s, I was utterly obsessed with them and knew their back catalogue inside-out. I would do godawful covers of their songs on KZfaq when it was still relatively new. 😅 This was before it was cool to start liking 80s AOR bands again, certainly here in the UK, haha. At the time, I was living in a town I hated and longed to move back to my hometown on the other side of the country. When I was 17 I finally had the chance to bail, the first song I listened to on my way there was "Escape" and I still get chills thinking about how alive it made me feel. Thank you Prof for bringing back all those fond memories of one of my big teenage musical loves! ❤️

I was going to the Hardline show anyways so I said yes. Next thing I'm in a small room with the winner, my friend and Neal. Before the lesson started he was just strumming around on his guitar and I told him what song it was from and then he started a riff and looked at me like I was on Jeopardy (Journey riffs for $2000, Alex) .....uhhhh....."Mother, Father"! He had the biggest grin on his face, like he didn't think anyone would know that. Rock on Professor...by doing what you are doing makes me think of memories I haven't tapped into in years.
