Our Journey to Alaska begins were we crossed our tracks from six weeks earlier, at Sunset Reef Campground, just outside of Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico! We take a little time to explore the area, but miss out on getting tickets to Carlsbad Caverns...that's one hard thing about traveling without a schedule.
Further to the northwest, we head back to Truth or Consequences. We've grown fond of this quirky little town and couldn't miss the opportunity to go back. We celebrate Kelly's birthday there with some snow, beer from TorC Brewing, a spa day, and some pizza from Outer Edge Pizzeria. As self-confessed foodies, we enjoy baked goods from Passion Pie Cafe, lunches from Grapevine Bistro, and hatch green Chile biscuits and gravy for Sunday Brunch at Giddy Up Cafe.
Following a difficult travel day, we get to Elephant Butte State Park where we stay for our "work week" and to enjoy walking along the lake. Not to mention, celebrating successes at Bigfoot Restaurant.
On our trajectory toward Utah, to wait for warmer weather before moving north toward Alaska, we stumble across Gallup and the neighboring Church Rock. While staying at Red Rock Park, we are treated with many surprises, including some terrific hikes starting from inside the park. Then, with full bellies and a clean truck and trailer, we head for Utah. See you there!
