Finally got my hands on a copy of this and you're right, its fantastic. I run an Epson 2250 projector and the 3D is pretty good. Stellar depth, but I dont get a great "pop-out" effect on most 3D blu-rays... Occasionally, but not that often. That being said, the scene at the very beginning with the centepes antennae jutting out of the screen was--by far-- the best pop out I have seen thus far. Looked like they were going to tickle my feet at the end of the recliner. Definitely going on my favorites shelf.

You nailed it! "but I don't get a great "pop-out" effect on most 3D blue-rays" neither does anybody else. They dialed it back through the years, but I love pop out!

@@TommyBoy3D Brother my name is Alex Pop-Out Shatner, that tells you I am a Pop-Out kind guy, but not the flash, type fast pop-Outs, I prefer the slow motion ones because you can appreciate the out of screen experience a lot better

My family owned the DVD version he mentioned at the start of the video. It had two DVDs, a 2D version and an anaglyph green/magenta version. It also included a few pairs of green/magenta glasses. I have used those glasses for viewing anaglyph media on my computer, but I never watched the movie itself. I decided to watch JttCotE last weekend and was glad to see the film had been re-released on BluRay at some point, enabling it to be viewed in high definition and in stereoscopic 3D with full color. This film was produced in what I consider the "Dark Ages" of 3D cinema, when filmmakers used real stereoscopic camera rigs, but operated with a set of "best practices" that I consider terrible. 3D films from the 2000s up to the mid-2010s often had low stereo budgets, and that limited amount of depth was expected to have 10%-20% of the scene in positive parallax at all times. And, of course, this was the era of "gimmicky" extreme popout gags that soured public perception of viewing entertainment in 3D with depth perception. I don't think 3D cinema has fully recovered from these Dark Ages, even to this day. 3D televisions and monitors are basically dead markets. My expectations of the stereoscopy in JttCotE were low, but I was pleasantly surprised. The stereo budget was more than twice what I was expecting, and though there were a high concentration of obnoxious popout gags in the opening act of the film, eventually they stopped doing them in a degenerate, breaking-the-fourth-wall way and let any popout that happened in the rest of the movie be natural. I think popout is exciting and good fun when done tastefully. The film itself was a nice adventure and I enjoyed it a lot. In hindsight, I wish I had gone to see it in theaters in 2008, but it's 2021 so I was able to view it in a virtual movie theater with my VR headset. I'm glad I never bothered watching it in green/magenta anaglyph. Eww!

This was a pretty good family friendly movie. Definitely a fun 3D experience! It's good that you mention in the video how to find the proper "Real 3D" version of the Blu-ray. Some of them can be a bit tricky. I bought Polar Express online a while ago and ended up receiving the Anaglyph 3D version. Since then, I make sure to double-check what I'm buying. Thanks for the review!

thank you for that information about the 3d bluray label & looking at the back labels, i had purchased Polar express without those labels and with the red cyan free glasses it was terrible 3D. Cannot watch it in PSVR well you can but its not 3D, and if you watch it with the red cyan glasses it looks so terrible i was so furious! I almost did the same mistake if i haven't watch this review. Thank you!

When talking about 3-D, I hate the word "gimmicky". No such thing in my book. Negative parallax is what it's all about.
