Susanne, I'm not afraid of work but like you, I realised that it was a LOT of work. And this chateau made us realise that we do not want 13 bedrooms in the chateau. We rather have outbuildings so people can stay in an independent setting and maybe having 2 or 3 B+B rooms. Oh what am I even talking about. Lets see what speaks to us. We might be surprised. Thank you so much for your comment. I'm curious, was there one thing you thought was gorgeous?

I think seeing this chateau was a good lesson for you. It was good that you kept open minds and explored something that wasn’t exactly right on paper. It had plenty of great qualities, but in the end you learned that those features that entice you really are more important than things like square footage or hectares of land. You’ve worked hard for this and are following a dream. Have a good look during your journey, and be realistic, but follow that dream. Find the place that makes your heart skip. Fixing up an old place is hard slogging. If you are not in love with it, it will become a chore instead of a pleasure. Good luck!

Dear Doug. Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment. Very much appreciated. It is always a temptation for overachievers to take on more than they (I) can manage. Been there and hopefully, I'm done with that. It is completely true that if one is not in love with a property that needs to be renovated, it becomes a burden and not a joyful (even when it's hard) journey. When we have that tiny feeling in our stomachs......... we will know. Your comment is so very well thought out and heartfelt. We feel very honored.

I must say that I am thoroughly enjoying your vlogs! The two of you have given a very insightful tour of each of the chateau you’ve shown so far. You both present yourselves very well on video and I am a little jealous of how clear and concise your scripting has been especially since your tours don’t seem scripted at all but flow very well. My wife and i have dreamed of owning a chateau in central or southwestern France for years and love learning from your experience. Thanks so much for sharing this wonderful adventure with us!

Hi Lance. That is such a great comment and thank your enjoying our vlog. We don't have anythings scripted. We basically talk about how we felt and what we saw. We have a 2 minute conversation before we start and then we just talk. Wait till you see our outtakes! There is a blooper video in the near future! Please hold on to your dream. We were thinking about this quite a while and now it is shaping up to become our reality. Of the chateaux we have shown so far is there one you liked? It's not quite the Southwest style. Thank you for sharing the journey with us.

A very eclectic interior. Some really good points and some pretty bad ones. I usually ignore colour schemes and decorations as being minor annoyances that can be rectified with paint and furniture. Room sizes and structural damage however are serious problems. The staircases were really nice as you said and it was remarkable that so much land remained with the property. Very bizarre that the pool was so far away!
@patrickjourneytothechateau8243
@patrickjourneytothechateau8243 2 жыл бұрын
Hey there Robert. Stuart said to me not to mention color, because I always get annoyed when people do that! And you are spot on. Paint and decorations/furniture need to be ignored. But that yellow was like a gut punch. However, your point about potential structural damage is very well taken. Thanks for the reminder. It's easy to forget the fundamentals when one is smitten with a property. It was an intriguing property for sure. The right people can make this into a dream home/business. It's just not us. Thrilled you gave us such a thorough opinion. Thank you.

Hi Patrick and Stuart. Thanks for the tour. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so everyone sees something different. You are correct about the pool, it is totally unusable. Not that it is so far away from the Chateau. It would be a delightful walk or drive in an electric cart. But I am sure when the pool was constructed, none of the mature trees were there. You cannot maintain a pool or large fountain near mature trees. I unfortunately found that out when I had my 7 meter round fountain installed next to a large flowering tree. It was a constant battle cleaning out the leaves and flowers on a daily basis. So I cut the tree down. But with this chateau, you would need a team of lumberjacks, so better to fill it in and build another in the wide-open spaces. From the old postcards, you can see that the driveway around the chateau was compacted, but now it is mainly grass which is holding the water and causing the dampness in the cave. The ceiling plaster falling does not bother me too much. These spaces are usually filled with sand for installation. When it gets wet, they become so heavy that partial collapse is the only option. I would highly doubt that the main beams are rotted. They are usually as firm as steel. But of course, the question remains, why did it get wet. If it was from a broken window, again an easy fix. From a roof, well that becomes extremely costly and judging from that stable, the roofs on this property are suspect. Colors, paint and fireplaces are easily changed. Roofs, heating and plumbing are the major concerns. This Chateau, at over $735 is a bit pricey considering the repairs that must be done. Roanne would have been a convenience but you have to be happy with what you are buying first. Keep looking and good luck in your search .

Hi Leslie. We have several hundred+ year oaks close to the pool. However, flowering trees are a completely different issue. The small petals are a pain to fish out. Your points are all spot on. Thank you so much for the input. We will, once we find our new home, have it inspected for dry rot and insect activity. Better to know! This chateau would have been a great challenge. However, as some of our viewers have pointed out so eloquently, one better is in love, otherwise it becomes a chore. I ;love you knowledge of details!!!! Around the chateau there should;d be either gravel on a compacted driveway/courtyard or a nice stone patio on a proper foundation with drainage. You are right of course. Stuart told me not to mention colors and design..... Because when I watch House Hunters and people complain about color or furniture.... I yell at the TV. See, 'm guilty too. I was worried about the roofs too. And at the price point...... It has been reduced once from euro 700.000. Well, we are looking and hope to find one we love and maybe move next spring. Thank you again for your comments and for joining us on our journey.

It seems like any chateau is going to be a demanding mistress so you had better start out in love. You do realize that in the end you are going to fall in love, throw your wish list out the window, and end up with something completely different from what you planned? It always seems to work like that! Out there somewhere is a chateau that has plans for YOU! Many years ago I dated a guy whose mantra was "small house, big barn". Sounds like you are looking for the chateau equivalent, with a smaller main house and more outbuildings. Loved your presentation, as always.

Now Elizabeth, what an insightful and true comment. You might be totally correct and we kick that list out of the ballpark when we find the property that feels right and "whispers": Welcome home. I think I'm OK with that but for now I'm holding on to that list for dear life. Writing this, I imagined our vlog when we actually have bought our chateau and go there for the first time. I'll most likely be an emotional mess for all the happy feelings trying to come out. I'd say sufficiently large chateau with as many outbuildings as possible sounds great. Thank you again. Loved your comment.

Hello Nuria. Thank you. Wine rack was Stuart's design and we built is together after 4 years of thorough renovations, it was a total fun project. Glad you like it. XVII and XVIII it is, I promise. Lesson learned. A smaller scale is not going to be too overwhelming. We don't search for our chateau to live in the coach house. We really don't want to have 20 bedrooms. No hotel here. LOL Thank you for your comment. Is there anything you'd be looking for? Since we slightly changed our target for chateaux, I'm curious.

All I could think of as you took us throughout the chateau was the Money Pit. Unfortunately, when roofs leak, there tends to be much more water damage than is visible. I had friends who are extremely wealthy and had no doubt whatsoever that they could take on a massive project house in England. They budgeted carefully and were very sure they could do it. When the reality set in, and they realized everything from the $500,000 roof down to the cellars were crumbling. Everything was massively expensive. They were damp and cold all the time. Their clothes got moths and mold. Nothing ever seemed to dry out. It took a toll on their relationship. They ended up splitting because one of them was way more willing to sacrifice comfort than the other. In the end the country house got a new roof, stabilized walls, lost most of its actual period interiors due to rot and moisture, and the house was eventually sold because it was far out in the country and my friend got lonely and bored of the same old villagers who never quite accepted them.

Hi there! We have addressed this a few times in the comments of this and our other vlogs. It's a good question. We decided to concentrate on style, building period, condition and location and not to discuss price because that is for the most part not what most viewers want. I do understand your curiosity and Escape to the Chateau DIY always mentioned the purchase prices. I always thought that was interesting too. It is just a decision we made, and some of these properties are no longer even for sale. Now, if you read some of the comments, there are fellow Journey members who know the prices and discuss them. Hope that is ok with you. Thanks for watching.

@@patrickjourneytothechateau8243 There were some things to love like the two staircases and the paneling and woodwork in some of the rooms. But I agree with you about the downsides including the amount of work it will need. It was a bit distracting as well that the former owners clearly didn't know what to do with a historic property. Many suspect choices in colors, decor etc. Of course all of that could be remedied.

Wow. Could be a beautiful property but I see an enormous amount of work and possible hidden "surprises" with that leaking roof. Or nightmares. Also, if I remember correctly, in previous chateau vlogs I seem to remember one of the owners mentioning they are limited as to the amount of bedrooms they can actually use for a business, i.e. bed and breakfast or hotel style accommodation. It seems they were/are only allowed to use 5 of their bedrooms. Sorry. Don't remember their grand total. Enjoy your adventure and thank you for taking us along.

Hello Melissa. It could be stunning. It was so intriguing. I think it showed us that we are not looking for a huge chateau but for one that is say XVIII century and has great period features and maybe less issues with dampness. I loved one advertisement I read years ago. Chateau for sale that was owned by the same family since 1750 and has always been lived in...... It was a print ad, no picture but I was so intrigued. You are indeed right. 5 rooms and you are still and B&B. More than that and one is considered a hotel with all the regulations that go with that. You have an excellent memory! The government got a little tougher and sometimes question if there are more bedrooms, if one is really a B&B. So bigger is not always better. So glad to have you along. Thank you for your input and moral support!

I'm of two minds about the mid/late 19th century chateau. I'm ambivalent about the aspirational but sometimes heavy interpretation of the ancien regime that occurred with the advance of the industrial revolution and the new fortunes being created. On the other hand I think they're more easily decorated as you're not wed to a certain period. Much of that house reminded me of the giant flats I lived in San Francisco in the early eighties. You are so very eloquent. Thank you. The industrial revolution has given birth to some stunning building, manor houses and chateaux. In general, the interiors are often intricate and attractive. Very interesting guys. All I could think about when you were walking us around, was what a money pit. I mean obviously, some renovations are going to be required with a chateau. But to think that they were living with a propped-up roof inside the house!! I think there are some renovations that are worth staying away from and anything to do with replacing a lot of water damage and rotten beams has got to be first on the list. Money suckers that they are!! Gorgeous chateau though, but I can understand why you walked away, I would have too.

The problem with this castle is mostly the lack of love. Which correlates with the eh let's say, 'variety' of interior ( some of it from the 1980's) and the lack of maintenance. It's like someone had the interest, but not the funds or any idea what to do.

Nothing wrong with 19th century chateaux per se. Not keen on this one, but some nice features. I prefer classical ones to gothic. Condition is key. Manageable size too. There is enough maintenance involved without buying something that is collapsing.

Hey Bob. Season greetings. Love your comment. We agree, there a4e 19th century chateaux that are really pretty. All depends on what the original owner was going for. Wedding cake look alike or as you mentioned gothic style are not for us either. Nice size/manageable and decent condition are really important. We might end up with a chateau that some people will find too small - however, now I’m speculating. Thank you for commenting.

Patrick, I had to laugh at your color comments. I agree…no goldenrod-ever, no red-really red-ever! This chateau, while interesting misses the mark for me. The building clearly has a lot of water infiltration. The odd characteristics seem to not know what century they want to live in. It just feels like the rooms don’t relate well to each other in styling. The barn & out buildings are much more interesting! Yes to courtyards!!
@patrickjourneytothechateau8243

Hello there Wendy! As always, thank you for your great comments. Goldenrod... oh well and real red only works at Windsor Castle when the walls are covered with red damask silk I think. In essence, we agree 100%. Love it. It was a bit thrown together. The rich Bourgeoise build these fantasy buildings, just like the late Victorians in GB. This wasn't as bad as some I have seen in England though. The outbuildings were pretty and interesting, just not enough. The land was amazing. I'd rather have an intimate XVIII th century chateau with less land but historical details than a 19th century one. Hugs and please be safe!

this Chateau has a bit of an identity crisis... some beautiful features, but i agree, so much work and may things would need to be removed to make it more cohesive. i hope someone chooses to save it, and either they find the different styles quirky or they pull them out... i just hope they are saved so others can use them in their restorations! Excellent tour again! This is SO fun! Call me crazy, but there was so much about this chateau that I liked that I would maybe reserve it for later consideration? The floorplan is good, the staircases, flooring and moldings very nice, the park setting and grounds are so wonderful. Strange that they built the pools and folly so far away, but they could be fantastic when redone with maybe a meandering path way with beautiful trees and plantings taking you there. Hi Chris. I think some of that depends on the occupancy of any building. There are buildings that survive beautifully through the centuries if they are inhabited and/or cared for. The problem is when buildings are neglected and abandoned, then mother nature will start to reclaim them.
