Journey to the Chateau

Journey to the Chateau

2 жыл бұрын

While they were chateaux hunting in France, Patrick and Stuart participated in an online auction back in the United States for European Furniture and Decorative Arts. In this episode you can see the details of each amazing piece, and hear them talk about the items that they won, including some that were "accidental" purchases.
Join Patrick and Stuart on their journey to find a neglected, forgotten, or crumbling château in France, and then continue to follow them as they work on its restoration, rénovation, decoration, and furnishing. Along the way, they will also create and share videos on their preparation for having gîtes for guests, and an event venue in their chateau (wedding, birthday, anniversary, organization or club meetings, retreats, etc.).
👍👍👍
If you like our videos, please hit the like button on the video, subscribe to our channel, and use the "share" feature below the video to share it with a friend. It will really help us out. Thank you! 🙏❤️

An antique auction, a credit card and me. Always a dangerous combo

Isn’t that a lethal combo! Now add wine and it’s major damage 🤣. Happy to hear I’m not the only one in danger! There was an auction in Chicago Wednesday and there is one in Palm Beach coming up. We decided not to bid on anything…….. packing and shipping the whole house to France is already a huge undertaking. It was a difficult decision. 😂🤣😂. Be safe!

Hi Rick. Well, that is bad news. The same auction house just had a 3 day auction...... It will be the next vlog. UHaul is rented for this Monday. My car is not large enough. Stupid, I know, since we need to transport all of that to France from Illinois. 🤯🤣 Hope all is well.

Gents, what glorious buys!!! A tipsy, accidental auction, eh? Whahaha, I'll use that argument when next I plunder an auction. :) The cabinets, beautiful! The first one a mix of the Premier Empire and the Louis XVI and XV styles in gilded bronze decorations and shape. Typical for Napoleon III. The table, all beauties, especially the George III and the one you already had. Truly gorgeous! The Dutch one I recognise, I am Dutch :) The candelabra or in French girandoles, beauties! Yes... slight difference in height. The big one maybe nice on a column or a high round table? The trumeau is a mix of Louis XV and Louis XVI. a truly lovely one. As for the music box and it's size... you're not the first, nor won't be the last to be suprised after an auction haha. Happen to me too. In all, congratulations!!! Your acquisitions at auctions are always exquisite!! Gems for your chateau.

This made me laugh! I used to work for an online auction house and I can't tell you how many of our customers would come in to pick up their winnings and exclaim "It's so BIG!" I was an attributionist and when recording my lots I used to measure the items to the 1/8 of an inch. To think! No one reads my careful measurements????? LOL! Great items -- I loved them all. Remember: NO DRUNK BIDDING! Cheers from North Carolina

@@patrickjourneytothechateau8243 Yes, I was thrilled when I finally found the right one. I looked for many years. I bought new material last year and maybe will try to reupholster it next year. the material is a silk with embroidered flowers. One of the original cushions was damaged in shipping (also silk) but I could never find a good match. So, I will just change the surfaces that you sit on and leave the backs as they are. But that's not the piece to be envious over. My dining room is the place to drool, and not over food. The table - Louis xiv Boulle (10 foot, no leaves), massive 9-foot matching sideboard with a 400-pound slab of marble and Boulle mirror above, Matching china closet, Boulle secretary and soon to be delivered Boulle game table. They are not period pieces, but they are also not new. Table, china closet, sideboard and mirror are in excellent condition. OMG. Those pieces you have bought are stunning. I love Georgian card and tea tables the most. I do appreciate the elaborate design of Napoleon III style commodes but prefer Georgian elegance and simplicity. I love the demi lune table in particular, can imagine it with the picture or mirror above and the bunch of flowering orchids in some fancy porcelain dish. Though the chateau demands the grander scale perhaps, when more is more. The scones are so classy. The clock most likely had some ormolu mouldings in shape of the garland or something similar. You will be able to find a suitable replacement for it in France, no doubt. Well, you said that it is not about chateau hunting. I believe it is about getting ready for chateau. 👍

Hi there. The marble top is almost gilding the Lilly. Your suggestion is quite a good possibility. The marble top might have been a later addition . It’s a very pretty marble though. Guys you don’t have to “like” my comments since I am going back to the beginning of your Vlogs. You reminded me of the time that I went to Sotheby’s, NYC who was selling Katharine Hepburn’s estate. I really really wanted a piece that looked like a chest of drawers but in miniature. I was bidding, praying that I would get it and the price was getting a bit too high and all of a sudden the bidding stopped and I won. I was shocked though it cost me about $4000! 😉 It looked like a jewelry box but I found a sewing pin inside. I have Katharine Hepburn’s sewing pin 😮

A normal light bulb socket won't have to be changed for your lamps, just the plug for the wall...for smaller light bulbs such as the flame bulbs for chandeliers will all have to have the socket changed and the wires soldered to the correct size if that is the design... I recently bought a couple of lamps here in Paris with old batons instead of screw in sockets, and there is no such thing as a LED small light bulb with the batone to fit into the sockets so I have to pay to get those fixed, electriciens do a really crappy job on replacing those small sockets, so be forewarned. I had a Tiffany lamp and it needed three small screw in sockets replaced and they really made a mess of the thing. it works but when I take the shade off to replace a bulb I get angry all over again.....

I would say your clock is from the Restoration era (1815-1830), therefore after the First Empire. of the popular Lyra type. Is the pendulum suspended by a silk thread ? If not the movement has been altered. The meubles d'appui are definitely Napoléon III ( 1852-1870). The sconces are 19th century in Louis XVI style. In the Us the prices are as low as they are here in France, probably due to the disaffection for period or style fourniture nowadays.

Your lyre form clock is - problematic. The gilt bronze body is likely incomplete, the two holes visible on the side of its case certainly relate to an element now missing. The two block support is unusual - one would have been sufficient and more typical. These bases usually (pretty much always) had gilt bronze feet, of one form or another - are there holes in the corners underneath? The word "style" in describing antiques means - made at a date after the time the style was current, so a "period" piece would never be described as "style" in a (serious) catalogue. The clock could well have been assembled in its present configuration long after the early 19th century. by someone with a couple piece of pink marble at hand.
@patrickjourneytothechateau8243
@patrickjourneytothechateau8243 2 жыл бұрын
We knew that some of the bronze decorations were missing. And sure enough, there are 4 holes in the bottom where the feet would have been. Yes, style always means made later than the period. Finding an 18th century chateau will pose challenges because there are not that many 18th century pieces out there and often way out of our price range. And some things are just better newer (like a bed). Thank you so much for your wonderfully detailed and informative comment. If it weren’t fo you, I’d maybe never realized the clock had feet!
@dougkelley2781
@dougkelley2781 2 жыл бұрын
I hadn’t thought that it could be a married piece, but that could be. You’re right about the feet, which could have been paw feet or spindle for this style. The missing ornament is unfortunate, but I don’t mind some of that when a piece retains its overall lines, and it actually gives a piece a bit of character and history - like your favorite great-uncle, who will tell you the story about how he got his bum leg landing in Normandy. It is possible to find suitable odd bits of ormolu online for cheap. If the clock had been perfect, it’s price would have been much higher.
@JourneytotheChateau
@JourneytotheChateau 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you, John. As Patrick mentioned, we were aware of missing decorations and that it was a 19th century clock in the "style" of Empire. It is fairly typical for us to acquire something like this at a low price that needs restoration, and then have it become a project for us. We are quite handy at sculpting, painting, and gilding, so if we can't find what was actually missing, then we will just create something ourselves to turn it into our own Empire style art piece that is still a working clock. Thanks for your input!
@johnvonundzu2170

@@JourneytotheChateau As Doug Kelley says, there are, now & then, 19th century replacement feet out there (on French eBay). I'm not seeing any reason to consider the metal parts of the clock to be later than c. 1830 - it's a Charles X period piece, with losses. You don't see fakes of the period out there, in the 19th cent there was, if anything a glut of originals - so no need for fakes. And fire gilt bronze started dying out after 1850 - & your piece is fire gilt. Don't try to re-embellish - it has a nice clean if slightly bare look. You probably won't want to do this - but I would lose the bottom block of marble with the holes and attach feet to the smaller piece- it would have a much better , more balanced, less clunky look - and no holes staring back at you!
