Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
Asylums with doors open wide
Where people had paid to see inside
For entertainment they watch his body twist
Behind his eyes he says, "I still exist"
[Chorus]
This is the way, step inside
This is the way, step inside
This is the way, step inside
This is the way, step inside
[Verse 2]
In arenas he kills for a prize
Wins a minute to add to his life
But the sickness is drowned by cries for more
Pray to God, make it quick, watch him fall
[Chorus]
This is the way, step inside
This is the way, step inside
This is the way, step inside
This is the way, step inside
This is the way, this is the way
This is the way, this is the way
This is the way, step inside
This is the way, step inside
This is the way, step inside
This is the way, step inside
[Verse 3]
You'll see the horrors of a faraway place
Meet the architects of law face to face
See mass murder on a scale you've never seen
And all the ones who try hard to succeed
[Chorus]
This is the way, step inside
This is the way, step inside
This is the way, step inside
This is the way, step inside
[Verse 4]
And I picked on the whims of a thousand or more
Still pursuing the path that's been buried for years
All the dead wood from jungles and cities on fire
Can't replace or relate, can't release or repair
Take my hand and I'll show you what was and will be

Atrocity Exhibition opens a chamber where Ian's body still twists. The final exhibit closes that chamber which, Decades later, is still too close for comfort. Unknown Pleasures stands to Closer as 'Zarathustra' stands to 'Twilight of the Idols' (Ragnarok): the latter is where philosopher and poet's heart and soul are found.

A peerless album opener. Ian beckoning us in to come and see his world view - be prepared, folks, it's bleak. Sets the tone for the rest of the record superbly. Surely contains some autobiographical elements too regarding the idea of seeing torture from the outside and looking in. This is how Ian described being on stage IIRC.

Stefan I'm a bit of a metal head.. I only mention that because it is the only possible reason I've overlooked this amazing period in music/history So pretty randomly like a week and a half ago my British friend text me a pic of a pressing of unknown pleasures and says if you've never heard this you should listen to So basically I got to go into that album with no expectations And I sure didn't know I was about to hear some of the best rock music of all time. I been a amazing week and a half I just wish I had more disposable income for pressing of the eps. It was Is new to me Last week and since I put unknown pleasures on its been a but of a obsession. I don't know i Just thought you would Appreciate my experience. Frankly I'm a little pissed off at my friend because all he ever talked about is far as music goes was The Stone Roses And that stuff is not in my cup of tea at all.

This is such a bland and almost stupid statement. There is loads of exciting, new and surprising music out there, you just have to be a bit more open minded. "Atrocity Exhibition," named after the JG Ballard book of the same name. I love the little guitar slide at the beginning. It's like all the actors getting in position for the opening scene of a play before the curtain opens. The bass is a little low, but all of what I call the "important" notes get accented so they're heard prominently in the mix. Stephen's drums are technical, subtly varying, tribal, and vicious. Ian's vocals illustrate quite clearly and boldly his mental state, how he felt perceived as a circus freak by his own audience. Not that I feel he doesn't bear some of the responsibility for that; he very clearly does, given his intentional dance during live shows. Nevertheless, this song may be his most honest insight into his own feelings, even if he insisted all of his songs were impersonal and open to interpretation. The guitar steals the show, however; noisy, messy, chaotic... probably the closest Joy Division ever got to contemporary band Throbbing Gristle, a great band in its own right. What an album opener. Masterpiece.

Para mi la música de Joy Division es prácticamente una obra de arte tanto en lo musical como en lo lírico y mas valor tiene por haber sido hecho por 4 jóvenes novatos en la materia.

*A Competitive Genesis of the Mysteries* At the end of all knowledge lies the place nobody like to go to. It is the end that justified the beginning. It completes the circle in a recurring idiocy. It is the artistic drop-off point, supposedly so intelligent that it has become irrelevant is a state of mind as warped as it inception. Here it is, the end of all knowledge and ambition as twisted as a Lovecraftian portal. "Herein, lie all the mysteries, but be warned, for they are threefold!" 1. The end justifies the means. 2. The means justify themselves. 3. Two for the makers, one for the fools. 4. The more you know, the less you show. 5. Help to keep the mysteries, for they bring treasures. 6. I summon thee for wine. 7. A screen is a screen, no matter how high or low. -Francis Blake

Theoretically, over time, the more you find the truth and the more intelligent you are, the smaller you get, the weaker you become, and the more you sink into a motionless pit of Hell.

@@lucmoore6176 to be fair, Ian was a big fan of Burroughs and Ballard could be kindred spirits of Bill Burroughs.

This could be only Ian’s vocal and incessant drumming. I’d listen for days and never get bored. Stephen Morris is the amazing drummer.
