Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
In fear every day, every evening
He calls her aloud from above
Carefully watched for a reason
Painstaking devotion and love
Surrendered to self preservation
From others who care for themselves
A blindness that touches perfection
But hurts just like anything else
[Chorus]
Isolation
Isolation
Isolation
[Verse 2]
Mother I tried please believe me
I'm doing the best that I can
I'm ashamed of the things I've been put through
I'm ashamed of the person I am
[Chorus]
Isolation
Isolation
Isolation
[Verse 3]
But if you could just see the beauty
These things I could never describe
These pleasures a wayward distraction
This is my one lucky prize
[Chorus]
Isolation
Isolation
Isolation
Isolation
Isolation
#JoyDivision #Isolation

These are definitely the most poignant lines of Isolation. This is the human condition in a nutshell, every one of us can be reduced down to our existence and how it relates to those who brought us into the world.

I would comment about this verse right now. It reminds me of the day my mother told me: "I'm sorry, but you can't have contact with other people." She said that because i think everyone's against me or that everyone wants to hurt me. Those words are still very painful to me.

Speaking personally as a technically very skilled bassist I would have refuted this comment vehemently for YEARS, especially when I first heard JD in '78, I thought he was rubbish. Now of course I totally concede that whilst he's not got what you'd call 'chops', he is totally unique which makes him great. If JD had asked me to join on bass in the early days rather than Hooky I'd have completely f***ing ruined everything for everybody!! 🤣

This is the type of song that if you weren’t paying attention to the lyrics you would think it’s a happier sounding song because that base slaps. The contrast of that type of sound and the lyrics is the seminal distinctive tone that made post punk the most influential wave of music since the British Invasion in the 60s.
