One of my fave JD tracks; dark, industrial, troubled, intense and insistent. Ians' angst about his relationships, and the pressure of being in a very upcoming band are to the fore here!
It's grim up North!
Sing along with it!
A cry for help, a hint of anaesthesia
The sound from broken homes,
we used to meet always here
As he lays asleep she takes him in her arms
Some things I have to do
but I don't mean you harm
I wore a careless glance
and kissed her last goodbye
Hands in the bag she packed a tear
she tries to hide
Cruel wind that howls down
to our lunacy
And leaves him standing cold
here in this colony
I can't see why
all these confrontations
I can't see why
all these dislocations
No, family life just makes me feel
uneasy
Stood alone here in this colony
In this colony (4)
Yeah, God in his wisdom
took you by the hand,
God in his wisdom made you understand (4)
In this colony (4)

Never saw a drummer playing like Stephen Morris, never saw a bass guitar sounding like Peter Hook, never heard such an incendiary guitar like Bernard Sumner's and never felt how I feel when I listen to Ian's voice. And never saw a voice, bass guitar, leading guitar and drum sounding the way this band used to sound. They changed my life for good

Best...most original band ever...dark...foreboding...intense...saw their second to last gig at the moonlight club in west hampstead...nothing ever came close...not the deftones..linkin park...nirvana...radiohead...god in his wisdom took you by the hand...who else does lyrics like that? Steven Erikson in his books the Malazan chronicles....and Stephen Donaldson...With Thomas Covenant...they would have understood and knew what he meant.....Ian Curtis a true genius..

My God, thise drums!! Some of the most interesting, innovative and creative drumming that I've ever listened to. Stephen Morris is such a great drummer.

Totally agree! Stephen Morris is a law unto himself, a spirit of nature. At this moment, the only cliches I can think of to describe his fantastic percussive alchemy. His drumming was the vertebral column around which the other instruments were connected.

based on Kafka's 'In The Penal Colony', where a machine - hence the machinelike quality of the music here - is used to carve the sentence given to each prisoner on their body ... grim. Great tune, especially Barney's guitar bit when it slides back and squeals ...

Colony mixes that dark but aggressive feeling into one solid song. I personally Think their Darkest even maybe ill goes as far as saying gothic sounding song would be Something Must break, that song is just pure evil is fantastic!

Funny but imagine that my aunt bought for my brother, who has 7 years old, JOY DIVISION album "Closer". I was 4 then. This vinyl was printed 9 days before Ian died. I didn't like their music in 80's. I am not sure why we got this album then, but now ..Hmm. Now it is a different story. I still have this album "Closer" 9.05.80. Hey ALL OF YOU watch all Ian's around you, they need your hand.

It is clearly about society as a whole and the means of what it is to feel completely alone while surrounded by all of your family and friends. Hi Droyd! Ian suffered from epilepsy. This condition, the medication and the exhausting effects of touring and physical exertions on stage, the trauma of his relationship with Annik whilst he was married to Debbie, all had a devastating effect on Ians mental well being. You may already know that Ian committed suicide in May (18) 1980.

@door2yourheart @door2yourheart No, not absolutely. But, then 'Atrocity Exhibition' - which we do know is a Ballard book and, that Ian C did read - has little lyrical relation to the book. Surmise that Ian was taking these titles and ideas (of suffering) as starting points for talking about his own, personal, suffering, that's all really. I still think that the machine like nature of the music on Colony gives the game away though.

Colonized by what? When we stand outside, cloaked in agony and desolation, we have no anchor. Ian Curtis lived in the miasma of darkness that filled his music. But, even in death, the dance comes through. It's original trance. New Order just went chic, while Ian burns in his happy hell. I would like to join the colony, but I don't think I have the moves. But, your vid is so very cool. But there are so many things we could say, if we could keep ourselves from sliding deeply into the void. Thx!

@friendenemy2001 and for the record Barney out of this band was a big metal fan before he started the band. You can hear that in the riffs of the albums. I don't trust anyone that doesn't at least like one metal band. It's a genre that has more diversity than any other music.

@marquisethe Well i'm sure Manchester is of major significance, but at the time, the band were all over the place geographically. Gig after gig! This is only my opinion ok, but I think, due to personal circumstances, Ian felt isolated wherever he was. Everywhere was a colony, and everywhere he felt alone. That's putting it simply.

The problem is that they mostly own only a few skills to play for any value of worthwhile game. These demons are not very skilled. They are worthy of their grimoire scribbles. After seeing JD in London, February 1980 it was very clear they were influenced by Iggy Pop. Ig's "The Idiot" and "Lust For Life" were seminal influences on their style of music."The Idiot" was massively popular in Goth clubs, in the very early 1980s. Sadly it was also the last album Ian was to ever hear, on that terrible day in May 1980....
